@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Thanks! I might in fact do that, cause I don't want a big stir. But yes, so far it's been 99% super fun to be engaged (free wine! spreadsheets!) and 1% me lurking in corners like the weirdo introvert I am. And some bits have been really fun! Plus we have a mutual friend who is also getting married, but is farther along in the planning process, so we've pumped her for useful information. So that should help. Eeep.

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Ooo which comics? I've been reading (and loving) Saga and Ms Marvel, but I may be ready to branch out.

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) You can guess! It's good news of the major life-event type variety (haha, now that I've typed that out it feels silly not to just say: I'm getting married). Anywhoo, so that cat's out of the bag everywhere except facebook i.e. the part of the world that contains ex-boyfriends and people I went to middle school with. I'd kind of prefer to just quietly slip it past facebook, but I'm sure they'd have some algorithm to prompt everyone to ask me to see the ring (not wearing one), etc., and then perhaps want to be invited, and then chaos? So maybe I will just quit social media forever? Hmm.

@friendofmyyouth Yes, exactly that. Maybe I will whisper it to myspace.

I changed which K-drama I am watching (TROT LOVERS: it's so good) and which coffee I am drinking because there was a dollar coupon. But I miss having chicory in my coffee! So I will never coupon again. There's another big change, but it's a semi-secret sooooo. Which is to say, I haven't told facebook and maybe never will.

Also, anyone who lives in Southern California, Atlanta, Chicago or New York, please see this movie and report back: http://www.dramabeans.com/2014/09/cj-giveaway-win-tickets-to-see-tazza-2-in-theaters/

On More Than the Banana Skirt

What an awesomely curated tumblr! I cannot wait to get my hands on the book. I love this shot of Nina Simone: http://vintageblackglamour.tumblr.com/post/18020858036/stunning-shot-of-nina-simone-by-pittsburgh

And, I never knew that Billy Dee Williams' middle name was actually December. That's such a great name.

On The White Beauty Myth

"Representation matters. Diverse representation will change our cultural climate, removing the stigma of Otherness." I think that's very, very true. I was listening to a TED talk by Sana Amanat, who's on the Ms Marvel team, and she talked about representation in comics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9lev9739zQ (plus, I also remember how meaningful it was to me as a little to see powerful female x-men, like Rogue and Storm interacting on equal footing with the other x-men).

Great article all around, though. Lots to think about re: commodity culture and the quality of certain types of representation.
