On This is a Safe Space to Talk About Your Dissertation

I absolutely hated my dissertation topic but it was the only one my advisor approved (I wrote 11 proposals trying to get out of this topic, that's how much I hated it). After it was done I never looked at it again. If you bet me $100 that I could not remember the title you would win $100. The only part of it I liked was the Acknowledgments page.

On This is a Safe Space to Talk About Your Dissertation

@OwlOfDerision I got a t-shirt that said "That's Dr. HelloTitty to you!" and wore it to my PhD celebration party. Feel free to steal!

On Coworking From Afar

FaceTime is now at the core of 75% of my relationships. I see my sister every day now; 7pm my time, midnight her time. We actually have a relationship now. Last night I FT'd with my BFF while we made dinner in our respective kitchens. "That burger looks good!" "Those pork chops look good!" "Don't let your cat lick the can in the sink, she'll cut her tongue!" Even my Mom videochats with me and she lives 20 minutes away.

@VolcanoMouse My mom is a bitch and a total pain in the ass, but she beat this cancer like it owed her money and I admire her for that. :)

It's very good that your MIL has local support; she will probably need it. Breast cancer is not a death sentence but it is a roller coaster ride. Reach out whenever you want. I am here.

On Friday Open Thread

@VolcanoMouse I have mentioned it too many times on the Hairpin, but my mom was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer last August. Stage IIIA. I knew right away looking at the mammogram film it was cancer 2 weeks before anyone would tell her it was cancer. She did five months of chemo but it didn't work so she had to have a mastectomy about a month ago. Surgery revealed the tumor was the size of a lemon but lymph nodes were negative for cancer cells so she was re-staged to IIB. The surgeon said she had never seen a tumor so large not spread. Mom just started radiation. Five days a week for eight weeks. My mom is 75 and so far she is handling it, but getting your cancer treated is a full-time job man, let me tell ya. Email me at hellotitty3@gmail.com if you want advice. Does your MIL have local support? Does she have Medicare?

On The Art of Sharpening Pencils

Those of you wondering if this "artisanal pencil sharpening" thing is a joke should read the linked article on The Millions. The question is addressed quite explicitly there.
"It’s an exercise in sustained seriocomic tone that somehow manages to be both elaborately ironic and completely sincere at the same time. He also really knows a lot about sharpening pencils."

On AGNES: An Empathy Suit for (About?) the Elderly

@skyandgorse I think there is something to that. I have a 90 year old relative who is deep in dementia and has been for years. She broke both her hips this year (separate accidents no less) and has been hospitalized for months. But her mind is so gone, she hardly notices what's happening to her. She's always singing old songs from her youth in her native language and when she could, she was often dancing.

On AGNES: An Empathy Suit for (About?) the Elderly

@klaus My mom is my AGNES suit too. She's 75 and I am 49. She has been in chemo for 3 months with 2 months to go for breast cancer treatment. After that she will have surgery and then radiation therapy. It'll be almost a year of treatment all told. I am her primary caregiver and let me tell you I try sooooo hard to remember that she is old and already going through a lot, but sometimes....sometimes I cannot stand how slow she is physically and mentally. Oh look, here comes the bus to Hell. Gotta run.
