@frigwiggin Still depressed, and I think I'm giving in more readily to undesirable thought patterns lately. I have a job now, though, so hopefully that'll keep me occupied and give me the impression that I have some societal function.

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Watch that cookie! Don't let it out of your sight! Keep it somewhere safe so you can watch it constantly! Watch it until you are at one with it, and the cookie is part of you!

@amirite They wait until the end of the sentence, then read the footnote, so:
"The house was quite fine, but for reasons of past reputation [and here there might be a little (1) here in the text, but they don't read that] its rent was well within the means of a gentleman of limited income. Footnote one: during the reign of King George the second, the house had been home to one of less reputable friends of that most excellent monarch. That minister, one Sir John Madeupname, possessed a love for the exotic members of the animal kingdom surpassed only by his hatred of any cages or restraints. For some years after his penury and eviction, the house and its grounds remained home to at least five camels, a flock of singularly aggressive peacocks, an ostrich, and an unknown number of llamas that, even as late as King George the third's first illness, would appear from the woods and assail passers-by with their spitting and kicking. [slight pause to show the footnote has ended] The house's owner was preceded in his tenantry by the library, which Mr. Norrell insisted blah blah blah the main text continues."
I never had trouble following the footnotes in audio form.

On Man Quits Internet: Goodbye, Hugo Schwyzer

@bluebears It's like some bizarre chocolate swirl of all flavors of terrible things. I feel like one thing that's gotten lost in this is how utterly terrible a writer he is (stiflingly sanctimonious, narcissistic, and with no grasp of anything broadly approaching subtlety either in his worldview or in his arguments), and then he goes and posts something to remind us both that he's a horrible person, AND a completely terrible writer.
AND HE STILL GOT TENURE. But I probably shouldn't think about that too hard.

@amirite My tastes skew towards genre fiction, so I'd recommend anything by Naomi Novik (Napoleanic dragons), John Scalzi (space opera), James S. A. Corey (more space opera) or Neil Gaiman (gods and magic and stuff; Anansi Boys is especially fun in audiobook since the reader is amazing). I also like the audiobooks of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, The Lost Books of the Odyssey, and Packing for Mars. I'd also recommend checking out iTunes U and seeing if there are any lecture series that interest you. I particularly like Yale's history and religious studies lectures.

@frigwiggin I'm with you, I was rooting against a kiss at the end because I thought what they had was more of a band-of-brothers-or-sisters connection than a romantic one. I agree that it was definitely Mako's story, structurally, but since that was true I do wish that they'd given her more lines. It's fine to have Raleigh as a portal character/exposition giver, but since he was kind of bland I wished they'd given a little more time to Mako.
That said, it was awesome overall, so I made this:

@so what? I know social awareness is supposed to spur me into some kind of action, but mostly all it gets me is bouts of paralyzing, physically painful shame that keep me inside and make it hard to eat.
