I'm over educated. I like comic books and video games. I love art, but not abstractions. I was a teacher for a short period, and probably will be one again. I'm addicted to the internet. I love new ways to look at old ideas. I'm obsessed with Batman.
@j-i-a Totally allowed to criticize it, but I think it's good to be aware of prejudices. As someone who considers herself a feminist (I wear the badge of feminazi with pride when it's hurled at me by buttheads) it literally had not occurred to me that I was judging many aspects of teen/tween young womanhood with a gendered gaze. Selfies, slang that I hate, texting culture, clothing trends...most if not all of those started and were popularized by young women. Just like science fiction. Now I just think "Mary Shelley" every time I get annoyed at giggling teenage girls and I can feel better.
@Slapfight I think it's a perception thing. People think more young women are doing it, so more young women get mocked? I'll admit it is not my bag nor a habit in my social circles so I am purely speculating now.
I saw this thing on Tumblr (I know, I know) the other day that actually made me stop and think about how I view selfies:
Young women berated for allowing social pressures to dictate appearance and constantly subjected to male gaze. Young women create new way to retain agency and express selves. Young women berated for new form of expression. Repeat.
@Radio_LJ I will say (and Dan Savage has explored this on a few episodes) that I continue to be torn. Child pornography is illegal, dangerous, and certainly alarming. It can be a sign of other, more destructive behaviors. But we are not equipped in this country to do anything other than jail pedophiles, and that's not what some of them deserve. There are people out there who have struggled for years with what they know they want, but have never acted. Much like people with other fetishes that are unachievable , some of those people rely on pornography to release pressure. Many of them have never, ever touched a child. Yet, because of the way our legal system is constructed, they cannot reach out for help, or they will get jailed, even if they do not own child pornography (I know that is not the case here) and have never abused a child. We are doing these people a disservice.
@DullHypothesis Huh, learned something new today. I'll admit that by 2 am I'm almost always in bed, given that the dog will wake me up at 6:30 to get walked no matter what. Thanks!
@Rock and Roll Ken Doll Not sure why anyone in Hyde Park would do that, but why hate on it? I lived there for a while (as did my mom, when she was my age) and loved it, for all that it was a pain in the ass to get to.
@truelove I'm super curious where you're going to get food and drinks that the "trains stop running." I know that, when I lived on the south side, it was a bit harder to get around (especially when I was down in Hyde Park, but that's a whole different issue) but with the exception of the Purple line most of trains run all night, just at less frequent intervals.
@Amphora Exactly! What other city in the world has as much public beach front as we do, by MANDATE? Where else in the world does the mayor get in trouble for wanting to take away public parks because private companies donated the lands and dictated the terms by which they can be used? Yeah, we've got problems, but we've also got the Art Institute, and a City Target in a Luis Sullivan building and the Midway and so much green space all spread out over the city instead of in one big chunk. Plus we make good beer. WE WIN.
@hotdog YES TO PEQUODS. All love to Pequods.
@all the bacon and eggs Similar feelings on my end. Plus I sort of love the fact that in this city depending on where she is when expressing all of her Very Important Opinions she could either get a very polite but icy Midwestern nod or a punch to the throat. I like that contrast in my hometown. I like the unpredictability of it.
