On A Thing You Should Probably Read If You Use the NuvaRing

I have been off birth control for about 2 years now, but before that I used the nuvaring for years with no complications. I actually have one in my fridge right now because I've been contemplating going back on it, but it looks like I'll be calling my doctor first.

On Hard Out Here for a White Feminist

@Interim Thank you so much for this comment. I've been attempting to put something like this to words all day, but you've done it much better than I could. This whole idea that racial critiques of "feminist" artists or writers are just hurting the "movement" by "pitting factions against each other" looks to me like an attempt to silence non-mainstream voices. As someone alluded to above, if your idea of feminism cannot withstand intersectional critique, maybe you're doing it wrong.

On A Wristwatch That Alleviates the Struggle (of Long-Distance Love)

Only a one-hour time difference, for about a year. We broke up because he was an asshole, not because of the distance.

On The Health Care Pie

@Aspiriationally Natalie That article really gets at our fucked up national discourse about health. Her basic point seems to be "only fat people who don't eat organic get sick." It's easy to say that healthcare shouldn't be available to everyone if people only need it because of their own bad choices.

On The Health Care Pie

@mistersister I have paid for my own health insurance for 8 years. I realize there are groups of people who are in an income bracket where they don't qualify for subsidies, can't afford insurance, don't qualify for an exemption, and don't receive insurance from work. I just think many people think they are in this situation when they are actually not because they aren't yet aware of all their options.

On The Health Care Pie

@mistersister Can't afford it even through medicaid and government subsidies? Have you checked out the healthcare exchange?

On Friday Night Lights: An Appreciation of The Cheerleader

@sydwi I ALSO LOVE THIS BOOK. I once wrote a long ode to it for a local paper (which was not nearly as well-written as this one) and Ruth Doan MacDougall wrote me personally to thank me. She even quoted me in the marketing for The Husband Bench. It was the greatest moment in my short-lived writing career.
