On A Very American Open Thread

Are the "Ask A ____" being phased out? Because please no. I love them a lot and miss them.

Unrelated... I've been wearing less makeup and am really loving it. It's been cool to sort of challenge myself on my own assertion that I need makeup to feel "on" or something/don't look "right" without it. Slightly embarrassing to admit all this because I know it shouldn't feel like a big deal.. but whatever. :)

On "The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known"

@frigwiggin I was once a letter-writer of this sort. Wasn't concern trolling, but my feelings were badly hurt by one of my then-bffs and I wrote a long, detailed letter articulating her many terrible qualities and said I wished to never speak again.

To this day (like 8 years later), it's the meanest, worst thing I've ever done and it is the only action in my life I feel a significant amount of regret and guilt over. That I can't undo it/fix it is/has been seriously the hardest fact to swallow.

I hate that I put someone through that- I'm sorry that happened to you too.

On The Craving: One Woman's Salty Confession

@Jocasta Carr I felt the same- enjoyed the writing, but maybe not the point of it all. I expected a resolution of, like, owning the craving or something- I guess not entirely sure what I expected- but was disappointed that it was explained away by pregnancy.

ETA: On my way to have a hot dog covered in chili :)

On Ask a Jeweler: Shady Platinum, Sizing Up Your Rings, and the Case For Sapphires

My engagement ring stone (I don't have it yet- but it's in the making omg so excited) is a Montana sapphire from Gemfix. They are beautiful and we love the whole mined-in-the-US thing! They are less cobalt-colored than sapphires from Ceylon, which, to me, makes them feel more wearable for everyday.. not sure if that makes sense to anyone else. Anywhoo, Gemfix is a very highly-regarded vendor and my bf had nothing but positive things to say about his experience.

ETA: we did check out the Natural Sapphire Company's showroom in NYC. Not super impressive- many of the stones were cut quite shallow and the girl never followed-up. YMMV.

On Other People's Kids, Homes

I like the idea of having board games, coloring supplies or whatever around the house.. but isn't that like the parents responsibility to bring? These parents just sound terrible and honestly I find it really appalling that as guests in someone's house they wouldn't be more respectful to you. I think this comes down to rudeness and being poor house guests more than anything kid-related. I wouldn't let them stay over again/ or feel guilty because they can't afford a hotel.
