On The Only Mystery In Vermillion, South Dakota

Good God, Lenz. This just rocked me this morning. Beautiful imagery. I think we would have been best friends at 14, if only our paths had crossed.

On Light-ish, Hippie-ish, Side Dish Ish/Help

AAAH YES TO BRUSSELS SPROUTS! I like to just slice 'em in half and roast. Aluminum foil on the pan, olive oil (with salt, pepper, garlic powder) on the foil, brussels cut-side down on the oil, swirl them all around so they're all in some oil, squeeze with lemon juice, bake for 20 min or so at 375 or 400 or 425...basically, hot-ish oven, bake until they start to get brown and crispy on top. Bonus: leaves that fall up get ULTRA crispy and delicious.

On Light-ish, Hippie-ish, Side Dish Ish/Help

My family's cranberry pear crumble is to die for...It is covered in sugar, but you can cut the sugar by half and it's still delicious :) Once the seal is broken at Thanksgiving, I pretty much make this weekly until cranberries stop being seasonally cheap. On Ask a Clean Person: Holiday Disasters 2012

My pine needle trick - using one of those fake-snow tree skirts. It catches about 90% of the needles, which I leave there for that "fresh pine needles in the snow" look, and is easy to scoop up and throw away afterwards. Anything else (and of course there is always more, especially after the tree leaves the house, with a trail of needles behind it) gets swept up with my lil dustpan and lil broomie.

On Friday Bargain Bin: Twelve Dollar Booties

No joke, I bought those candleholders for my Uncle-In-Law a few years ago...in red. Now I want to buy them for myself. BUT IN WHAT COLOR!?!

On Ask a Clean Person: Laundry School — Lint and Static and Ironing, Oh My!

I have these towels that shed their little turquoise fuzz balls everywhere...but I think it's less from not washing enough and more from being $4.99 towels from Target?

On The $625 Apartment

One more representative from the Bay Area :)

My husband and I pay $1900/month to rent a 2b1b (though the 2nd bedroom is tiny) in Berkeley/Elmwood. It's a beautiful 1907 Craftsman (duplex; we have the first floor), around 1200 sq ft with free laundry in the basement and a yard that we share with our upstairs neighbor. No parking, but a permit for the street is only around $30 a year. We feel super lucky. SF is definitely more expensive than Berkeley though!

We've paid between $1100 (640 sq ft 1 bedroom + yard/parking in a less awesome Berkeley neighborhood) and $1500 (850 sq ft 1 bedroom + deck/parking/laundry/storage in a nice area of Oakland), and he paid as much as $800 for a room in a nice apartment in a not-nice neighborhood...it's not cheap out here.
