Just another bookish flaneuse from the Canadian prairies.

On "Did Something Happen?": On Elena Ferrante's 'Abandonment' and Jenny Offill's 'Speculation'

Oh Jia, this made me feel like I was under water in a hazy, panicked, yet lovely way. You evoke these novels so well, I want to go out and get each of them immediately, the 22 (22?!) books I bought in July notwithstanding.

On Mad Men, Season 7 Premiere: Is This Where the Fire Starts?

@sophi I definitely thought Margaret had a cult/religious conversion thing going on.

On Mad Men, Season 7 Premiere: Is This Where the Fire Starts?

@tunnyciegos Agreeeeeee very much. People can only get away with blow-by-blow recaps and still hold my interest if they're SCREAMINGLY funny, which isn't really the schtick here.

On 20,000 Panic Attacks Under the Sea

Jia, have you heard the Good Guys episode of This American Life? It has a segment on deep sea diving gone wrong (act III here: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/515/good-guys) and it is TERRIFYING. I listened to it on CBC a few weeks ago while doing the dishes and was full-body shuddering and whimpering the whole time.

On Not True Detective But

@cmeggles I started watching on Friday and am now SO INTO IT. I like that the whole internet seemed to get OBSESSED with it at the same time.

On The Last Sunday of the Year

@hairpinner I wanted to reply to this and couldn't think of what I wanted to say, but this is exactly right and so well put. Esther, you are a treasure, and I hope for such good things for you, in your art and in love. I'm coming back to writing after three years away. It was so hard, and now it's so good. You'll have fallow periods, but eventually there will always be things you want to say.

On "Animals," by Frank O'Hara

Frank! I'm real partial to Having a Coke with You:

I look
at you and I would rather look at you than all the portraits in the world
except possibly for the Polish Rider occasionally and anyway it’s in the Frick
which thank heavens you haven’t gone to yet so we can go together the first time
and the fact that you move so beautifully more or less takes care of Futurism
just as at home I never think of the Nude Descending a Staircase or
at a rehearsal a single drawing of Leonardo or Michelangelo that used to wow me
and what good does all the research of the Impressionists do them
when they never got the right person to stand near the tree when the sun sank

On The Beauty Bridge

Jia, I love this so much. I want to send it to all the ladies in my family who have such a fraught relationship with beauty.
