On 500 Days Alone In: The World

@glitterary This is something lots of people say (the CELTA thing). But it is only true in very limited countries - many places just will not hire you unless you have the appropriate employment visa. And in the other cases, you are really putting yourself at the mercy of your school.
I've been teaching in Italy for a long time now, and while there were a few schools willing to hire me when I didn't have a green card but had the CELTA, they were the terrible schools that paid me badly, never on time, took away hours randomly, and obviously it was all under the table.
My brother taught in South Korea for a year, and while he and his wife did ok (but they were there legally with employment visas and appropriate credentials), he met multiple people who had had their passports essentially stolen from them by their schools.
I've read lots of similar stories about China.
Basically, making the choice to work without a real visa is like the choice illegal immigrants make to come to the US and work under the table. (I mean, not really, I'm not comparing my choice to go and live in Italy with a desperately poor Mexican person's decision to come to the US) But in both cases, you are putting yourself at the mercy of your employer. If they don't pay you, you don't really have any way to get your money. And if you are in Thailand or Spain or wherever, you most likely won't speak the language well enough to defend yourself.

On If at First You Don’t Conceive, Try, Try Again (and Don’t BD Until Your CM Is EW)

@Mel!ssa She might also be like my brother who got married at 29 after dating/living together for 9 years, so the finally refers to the relationship, not her age.

@Cavendish Link, please? I lurk on a different board but am rapidly getting fed up with all the baby dust. And good luck!

On The Pristine Myth

@Elleohelle you guys tons of Italians think that Canada is a state. As in, one of the United States states. I do my part by mocking them mercilessly whenever I find one of them. Canada may not be as loud as the US, but it's still the second largest country in the world. I mean, if you ever even loook at a map it should stand out.
They also are taught (as in it says so in geography books) that Mexico is part of South America. That (more or less irrationally) pisses me off and then I talk about NAFTA.

On Love Your Friends, it is the Only Way

I actually almost got in a fight over this yesterday. My friend's husband made some comment about how "women never say nice things about other women." I was like, "o rlly?" And then because we were having a nice evening and his wife is one of my favorite people I was just like, "you have the wrong women friends."
