On Remembering the Early Days of Jezebel with Anna Holmes

Another ex-Jezebel reader here! I discovered it early in the first year of university (2007) and it really shaped my feelings about feminism and widened my horizons - I will always be grateful to it for that. But I went off the super-po faced commentators and the re-design which seemed to put lots of American political ranty and minor celeb stories up front.

On The Life of a Royal Attendant to Elizabeth I: Cuddling the Queen in Boat Beds, Dealing with Her "Close-Stool"

Yes, Henry VIII had the 'Groom of the Stool', whose job is was to help with the king's movements. And, unfactchecked history has it, to then clean the monarch out, with his hand...

On Three Years of Gchats Trying to Convince My Best Friend to Like Drake

Looooove Drake, but it also makes me want to wear gold sequins and slut around in clubs and blow lots on coke and maybe be a rapper?

My work friend and I also wrote Drake and Rihanna fanfiction and nearly duetted Take Care in karaoke in front of the whole office but decided the intensity was too much.

On Get It, Girl

@marina It was 'The Origins of Sex: A History of the First Sexual Revolution' by Faramerz Dabhoiwala, although I was hoping for more juicy revolutionary stories, and less picking apart of 17th century law. It did have interesting nuggets in though.

On Get It, Girl

I read a book on this recently. It makes me sad that in medieval times, female orgasms were deemed absolutely necessary for pregnancy and yet nowadays, some people try to claim they don't even exist.

Interestingly, I feel we're more hardline on adultery (morally) and prostitutes. But obviously more liberal on gay sex and pregnancy out of wedlock.

On Laird Hamilton Knows

I really want to read one of those 'Day In The Life Of A Successful Person' that starts with 'Got out of bed at 11am.'

On Scandals of Classic Hollywood: The Many Faces of Barbara Stanwyck

@Faintly Macabre I saw the pre-code version too! Quite recently at a the Barbican here in London. And then after they showed two or three scenes afterwards that were changed for the Code - the cobbler warning her about morality in doom-laden tones made us laugh at how blatant the changes were. So there must be a version floating about.

On Inward Futures

I think it's actually something Harry Potter got around really successfully. Otherwise -

'Hermione typed 'Who is the Half Blood Prince' carefully into Wiz-Google'
