On "The Logic of Stupid Poor People," Or, the Only Thing Worth Reading About the Barneys "Shopping While Black" Arrests

@archived People like that get SO MAD when they feel like somebody else is getting something they don't deserve...and then they turn around and call us millenials the entitled generation.

On "The Logic of Stupid Poor People," Or, the Only Thing Worth Reading About the Barneys "Shopping While Black" Arrests

@archived It's like when people are *shocked* that poor people have computers or internet or smartphones - those things aren't luxuries, they're pretty much the only way to get information and find government resources and look for jobs and any one of a million other things people have to do. There are some places where, if you go in looking for a job, they'll tell you to go home and fill out the application online. But I guess that's what happens when you haven't had to actually look for a job in years/ever, because you live by networking with your rich friends.

Or the argument that homeless people shouldn't waste money on cell phones, as if cell phones are a) a needless luxury in the age of disappearing public phones and b) somehow eating up all the money the person would otherwise use for rent.

On Is Snooze the Enemy?

@Lady Humungus Especially if you wake up and realize that you've already hit the snooze like three times without noticing? I can't stop doing something I don't know I'm doing.

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) I don't think you sound crazy in this instance at all - I don't like that kind of thinking because it's like, well, sure, you could not have a cat and donate that money, and other people could commute by bus and donate the money they save, and all of us could live off of rice and beans and donate the money we save from that, and eventually everything you do that's not immediately essential to your continued existence is "unnecessary" and selfish, and that's ridiculous. Of course it's important to be aware of what you can do to help other people (and, you know, animals, like the ones in shelters who need homes) and not be completely self-centered, but you can't spend your whole life second-guessing and judging yourself for what you're not doing.

But also I think leaving it alone is probably your best option, unless he brings it up with you personally, in which case smile nicely and say something like, "well, everyone has their own way of trying to make the world better" and then change the subject (because, again, I'm not sure in what way adopting animals from a shelter or similar situation is selfish).

@meetapossum Ooh, that looks super-cool! I'm getting my new tattoo colored in tomorrow - I'm hoping he'll be able to do it in one sitting, but it's basically a half-sleeve so maybe not. I'm really excited, though!

Where are you putting yours?

On Advice From a Mom

@LaLoba I haven't listened to the interview, so I can't weigh in on that part, but one of my absolute least favorite things in the world is when people tell you you're dealing with trauma wrong. As long as you're not hurting yourself or anyone else, you should be allowed to have whatever reaction you have, and if that includes joking around about it and (*gasp*) not having nightmares, and as long as you're not judging other people for dealing with their trauma differently, I don't see a problem.

On The Health Care Pie

@Mae And the thing is, all the provisions of Obamacare, except the individual mandate, have between 54% and 76% support when you ask people about them separately. But the republicans/tea party have been so successful at branding the whole bill as "socialist" and job-killing and totalitarian that people oppose it without realizing what it's actually about.
