I came to the realization at work when someone said "We need to take a carrot and stick approach with this contractor." and I thought to myself "We're going to dangle some reward in front of them that they have no way of actually achieving? That doesn't make any sense." Then the epiphany.

@MoxyCrimeFighter - I only just recently learned that the phrase "carrot and stick" refers to rewards and punishments (i.e. feeding a donkey a carrot or beating them with a stick), not hanging a carrot on the end of a fishing pole. I blame Looney Tunes for my cultural illiteracy.
