On 'Pinners Unite for Good!
Awww, yeah.
Women for Women International: http://www.womenforwomen.org/
Provides support like job/rights awareness training, seed money for a business, or school fees for children in countries that have had long histories of war and conflict. The general idea is that women are supporting other women (obvs). In the past, I was "sister" to Mutabaro in Afghanistan who was supporting seven children. She graduated from the program in December 2011, and since then I've been "sister" to Clementine in Rwanda. There's the opportunity to write letters to the women you sponsor, but it's generally just nice to know that someone out there is making a better life because of your help.
Also, Planned Parenthood, natch.
Great idea, Hairpin!!!

@RK Fire YES.
"My dear letter writer. Thank you for your kind missive. I must say, your tale of Sir Bob and Lord Eli had me quite on edge. I had to take a turn about the room to compose myself."

On Maurice Sendak, 1928 - 2012
I work in children's books. My entire twitter feed is in mourning.
And this is why I love him:
“A woman came up to me the other day and said, ‘You’re the kiddie-book man!’ ” Mr. Sendak told Vanity Fair last year.“I wanted to kill her.”
Oh, we do such delightfully serious work, Mr. Sendak. Such gravely joyous work.
