@LooseBaggyMonster I feel like this is a canard (red herring?) though. Because, think of it this way. LITERALLY NO ONE IS EVER, EVER GOING TO READ IT. Most likely your committee won't even read the whole thing. All you have to do is pass the defense, then you write something real for publication--maybe it's your diss, maybe not, but YOU get to decide, and revise accordingly.

Honestly. I bet by the time I die, MAYBE 2 people will have actually read my entire dissertation. It is impossible to believe its inherent qualities (or lack thereof) could in any way play a role in me getting a job or not. Like yeah, the idea/concept should be good, but the actual writing????? No one will ever read it!

Is that comforting? I find it comforting. But I also find it comforting that there's no God or Heaven so maybe I am a pervert

@tigolbitties I agree. The odds of you failing your defense are probably worse than your odds for getting eaten by a shark. Try not to worry!! You know your subject like the back of your hand, just go in there and nail it.

@tigolbitties That is the greatest response you could possibly have. Definitely all the bad experiences I had in grad school and publishing have helped me see what I want to do/not do if I ever get a permanent job of my own.

And reviews CAN be so helpful! The reviews for my article were amazing. They weren't mean, but they were stern and detailed, and they made my article like a thousand times better.

@tigolbitties That Mean Reviewer shit is so classic. They take their weird issues out on whatever article they get across their desk.

Without giving too much detail, I have had a Mean Editor Situation, and it got SO WEIRD AND PERSONAL, and I was having nightmares about it. Finally I asked one of my profs and he told me all this gnarly backstory about this person hating my adviser. So it turned out it was all just this small, petty person taking out her dislike of my adviser's work on me.

My point is, you have no idea what's going on with these people. I had no idea this person had history with my adviser, and that they were a small enough person to take that history out on all future students of my adviser, you know? But now that I know all this other info, I don't feel bad at all.

I really do think that when they are mean, it's never about you or your work, it's because they feel insecure/defensive about something. Maybe your methodology reflects work younger newer scholars in your field are doing that is felt as dismissive by older scholars. Maybe you approvingly cite some book that was written by somebody this person went to Harvard with and hates for some reason. etc. etc. But it's not about you!!!!!!!! It's about them being crazy!!!!

Not like they can't reject or criticize, of course they should, but I think the MEANNESS is all about them being a sad fucked up person. You can reject without being mean.
