@wee_ramekin Also, there are more misspellings in that screed than in most blog-postings.

On Before Showgirls Was Showgirls

@Heat Signature I think Verhoeven points out that metaphorical depth in his book about the making of the film.

On Before Showgirls Was Showgirls

@Gilgongo I hope you're the only person in the world who hates this movie. I have to admit that the rape scene is pretty horrible, though, and made me more upset than I would expect in a movie so cartoon-like. I don't agree with Nicole's asessment of the pool scene that I remember Film Comment hilariously describing as something like "a parody of a European shampoo commercial."

On Before Showgirls Was Showgirls

@LeafySeaDragon You do not need to read WATER FOR ELEPHANTS. It is basically a bunch of very shallow research about circus folk woven together with a bunch of horrifically inaccurate dialogue.

I have been coveting this for years, though. It is unfortunately pretty elusive. Verhoeven claims he's completely serious throughout, but I can't fathom it not being largely tongue-in-cheek. In fact, I thought his direction of the film amounted to a hilarious critique of the ridiculous script Esterhazs delivered to him.

On I Drank the Kool-Aid, and It Was Juice

@whizz_dumb My bartender friend, Li, makes the best bloody mary's in the world. All manner of pickled vegetables and, on occasion, CHEESE on skewers. I wish it was after noon on a Sunday, now.

@parallel-lines I always say that Kombucha tastes like dirty socks but also somehow good, so he's probably on the right track. Let him know you can poison yourself with the homemade stuff, though.

On Quirks: Is Their Ignorance Our Bliss?

@Killer Kitties I titally do that and it's actually a lot more comfortable if you're tall. And upstairs seems far less dangerous than downstairs.

On Quirks: Is Their Ignorance Our Bliss?

@alphabiddycity Ha. It just might. I'm a gay guy who has a compulsive winker friend who's married to another friend. The first twenty times or so, I would think for just a second, "Is he flirting with me?" but then would realize immediately that of course he wasn't. Now, it's charming and it's always at extended family Thanksgivings, etc.
