On The League of Ordinary Ladies: Short Dates
@Mame Dennis-Pickett-Burnside Yes yes yes! I have been working through some serious life-long issues with lying with my therapist, and it is awful and makes me cry and hate myself, but sharing it was also the best decision I've made for my emotional well-being. It's out there, I'm aware of it, I'm figuring out why I lie/lied... and yes, my self-esteem is definitely improving. Hooray for recovering liars!

On Never-Complainers, Workaholics, and the Balding-and-Manly
@twinkiecowboy Yesss - I am very low-conflict (and my current guy is too, hooray!), but I had an ex who was raised in a more fighty household and just DID NOT UNDERSTAND IT. He would gripe at me about being too passive (what?), gripe when I told him I felt anxious when he flew off the handle about what I considered to be minor issues, etc etc etc.
Don't get me wrong, he was a juicebox, but I can also understand that, being used to disagreements = yelling arguments, he sort of got programmed to think that things couldn't be RESOLVED without an argument. Fundamental incompatibility there.

My dad is the only person allowed to comment on my posture, and even that is usually kind of obnoxious. WHAT A JERK.
This is a great article, though. Thank you.

@Mere Get your BF to prep you ahead of time with some topics - their jobs/basic interests, maybe recent changes to their house, stuff like that. Then you can say things like "So, [BF] mentioned that you guys just took a trip to Italy - I've always wanted to go, how did you like it?"
It shows that your BF is talking kindly about them (win), that you pay attention when he talks about them (win) and that you're genuinely interested in your BF's family (win). Wins all around!

On Look, We're Gonna Talk About the Gatsby Trailer Now
Is this a safe place to say I've never read the Great Gatsby? Well, okay, I think I "read" it in middle school, but mostly skimmed and faked my way through the class discussions. I remember absolutely nothing about it.
Worth trying again?
