On Tall Girls: A Story of Giants

@laserbeams I think we had the same adolescence...I, too, wear glasses and my teeth were so screwed up I had to have braces TWICE. Praise jeebus for adulthood!

On Tall Girls: A Story of Giants

@contrary the best thing that ever happened to me as a tall kid was that I basically looked like an adult from the age of about 14 and servers would offer me drinks! Like, at the bowling alley! When I was with a bunch of other kids from junior high! Instant street cred.

On Tall Girls: A Story of Giants

@becomeriver just YES to all of this! As a 5'11-er, I am still working through my issues with wearing "real" heels. My husband (who is also 5'11) thinks it's great, but I do get so freaking sick of the comments.

And even though I'm tall, I never slouch. This is because when I was growing up if I ever slouched, my grandmother would whack me (hard, for a grandma) between the shoulder blades and yell and me to stand up straight, keep my head up and be proud. Of course I was all eye-rolly at the time but am so grateful for it now.

On Tall Girls: A Story of Giants

@laserbeams @H.E. Ladypants MY PEOPLE. I am 5'11'' and emphatically NOT of the leggy gazelle type, plus I'm a klutz and can't really do the organized sports thing. Growing up, people always asked whether I played basketball or volleyball since I was so tall. And I had to be all, well, actually it's academic decathlon and drama club for me. Triple threat--tall, chubby AND nerdy! You don't come across that every day!

On How to Deliver a Baby Without Pain Meds If You're Not a Spiritual Person But Are Really Geeky

@Mila Wow, this is making me really appreciate my OB! She is awesome...basically doesn't give a shit as long as I know that she's going to intervene if the baby's in any danger, which is kind of what you want anyway. And she was at my first labor for about 5 hours. Guess I'll stick with her!

On How to Deliver a Baby Without Pain Meds If You're Not a Spiritual Person But Are Really Geeky

@MmeLibrarian that's a good thing! I am 22 weeks along with my second, and it's nice not to be so worried about the birthing part. I was super-freaked out out birth the first time around, but by the time it happened I was so ready to not be a fat, swollen punching bag anymore that pushing a watermelon-sized object out of my cooch seemed like a great idea.

On How to Deliver a Baby Without Pain Meds If You're Not a Spiritual Person But Are Really Geeky

@Nicole Cliffe Your husband must be some kind of genius or wizard or something! I have run marathons and given birth and birth is harder, hands down. It may be the ONLY thing harder, but it is definitely harder.

And many congrats to you! Well done. I can sympathize--I had to push for 3 hours, too, and face down my biggest fear (episiotomy! aaah!) but it turned out, as you say, to be NBD. Plus you get a little person out of the deal. Hooray!

On Have a Sexy Little Halloween

OMG! My Groupon today was for sexy Halloween costumes. I could choose from French maid, sexy pirate and several other options. Ruffle panties were on sale. I wonder if they come in maternity sizes? I would love to go as a preggo French maid. SEE WHAT HAPPENS, GUYS??

On "Accidental" Bra-Touching and Rebound Mathematics

@Emmanuelle Cunt Agreed! In fact, my husband was supposed to be a rebound. We've been married 11 years.

On Take This Halloween Costume Idea ... Please

@The Lady of Shalott oh god you must do this! Tangentially related true story: when I first met my future mother-in-law I said something brown-nosy about how she must be proud she must be to have 2 sons who are both doctors. She replied, "oh, but [your future husband, who has a PhD] isn't a REAL doctor like his brother [an MD]." There is officially no appropriate response to that.
