On What Made You a Feminist?

When I was about 9, I told my father I would like to play center field for the Boston Red Sox. He said "Girls don't do that." I was stunned. For a 9 year old, I had a pretty good throwing arm. About 20 years later, I discovered my jackass male co-worker who spent most of the day playing MUDs and MOOs was making 10K more a year than me. I had to go and face down the (female) Senior VP of my department and ask why there still was this kind of pay inequity in the 21st century. The battle, apparently, is never over.

On Ten Things You Should Never Say to a Mom

But which Mary Chapin Carpenter song? Also I can't wrap my brain around Nicole singing a Mary Chapin Carpenter song... if indeed we are talking about Nicole.

On Ten Days Alone In: Shanghai

I spent a summer up the road a bit in Beijing and I would like to give a shout out to those amazing breakfast crepes -- jian bing -- that you can get from the street vendors on every corner. They are the most delicious thing in the world ever and I believe with the exchange rate when I was there the cost was less than $1.(http://travel.cnn.com/shanghai/eat/diy-jianbing-breakfast-served-828924)

On Texts From Pride and Prejudice

@melis Can we vote? Because I am voting for Anne of Green Gables, mostly because I am dying to read Texts From Matthew and Marilla. Also, do you accept bribes?

On A Salem-Lover's Tourism Guide

For my money, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem is one of the best museums in the world. And the gift shop is to die for.

On Jew Camp Confidential

@TacoBanana Oh wow. I went to the same camp--only it was in New Hampshire. We had hippie counselors who taught us the words to all kinds of protest songs and let us tie-die our bedsheets & pillowcases. But my favorite thing ever was Wednesday movie night where we would watch horror movies or old wierd flicks like Casino Royale and make out with boys. I dated a boy who looked like Robert Di Niro-- not a good thing in a 12 yr old, but he was super sweet. I loved my leftie Jew camp.

On Plus, Your Husband Won't Help You Pay Them Off

The geniuses who now administer my student loan send me a separate invoice every month for each year I was in school. Red Tape much? They also maintain one of the least user-friendly websites on The Internets. I feel like they are just strewing landmines everywhere, just waiting for me to lose my focus and KABOOM.
