On Before Too Long, Everyone You Know Will Be Named Emma

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher I love Emory and Amory for a girl; Amory for "This Side of Paradise." I also like Zelda, for the Fitzgerald.

I've always loved Philippa/Pippa for a girl, but the younger Middelton ruined that for me. And I named my car Pippa anyway.

On Before Too Long, Everyone You Know Will Be Named Emma

@Rubyinthedust My name spiked about 10 years after I was born and the most common age is 12 years younger than I am.

This bodes well for future lies about my age.

On Scandals of Classic Hollywood: In Like Errol Flynn

This made me go back and re-read the SoCH article on Rita Hayworth, and holy crap, that was an incestuous little group. I now need a SoCH on the de Havilland sisters.

On Beauty Q&A: Shells, Bra Purses, and The Next New 'Do

I wear Birkenstock thongs on vacation. No shame. My feet are happy. They aren't really waterproof, but they're comfy and they have a rubber sole. Or I wear super broken in wooden soled flip flops and/or cute vintage-y Nikes. Or Cole Haan ballet flats. Depending on where I'm going. Or boots, if it's cold.

Also, for the curvy lady wearing a blazer, embrace the half-tuck. It kinda tightens everything up at the waist and makes sure you don't lose the length of your legs, without looking too uptight or tucked in (Although tucked in may be good for you at work?). I also find the kate spade sample sale is a great place to get nice lined sleeveless silk blouses for less than $100. And if you're prone to being sweaty, the non-silk fabrics can get a little, ah... fragrant...

On Beauty Q&A: Do You Smell What I Smell?

The jeans-in-boots thing is like just about everything else. Sometimes it looks good on you and sometimes it doesn't, regardless of size, although I think this look looks good on most people. But here's my professional (yes, professional) advice:

You must get skinny jeans. The skinnier the better. The bunchy pants thing is actually what makes the look unflattering. Get jeans with stretch in them so that the knees don't bag out too much. It can also help to line dry your jeans because the heat from your dryer can ruin the elastic, making them permanently baggy.

Get nice boots. This look has been ruined by too many shitty boots.

Also, get over the "I'm not skinny, so I can't wear skinny jeans" thing. It's BS. I think it's especially flattering for those of us who carry more weight in our hips/thighs/butt because it skims over everything and doesn't add any extra volume, which I think can happen in bootcut jeans and almost always happens in a straight leg. Denim also tends to hold things in place more than other fabrics, which is awesome. Also, if you're doing the jeans-in-boots thing, it helps balance out the proportion in a way similar to a bootcut jean, but can be more streamlined.

And if you're willing to invest some money in this look, find a straight-talking salesgirl in your favorite store and tell her what you're trying to do. She's going to work hard to make sure you feel as good as you're going to look.

On For My Daughter, on Her First Birthday

Oh God. In the future I will have to explain Tumblr to my children. I don't know if this will be easier or more difficult than explaining what "Teen Spirit" is and why it matters that Kurt Cobain smelled like it.

On Friday Bargain Bin: Screw It

@Ellie They are! They're like skinny sweatpants, without being leggings. They're a thick fabric, but they aren't fleecy or bulky. And, yes, they make your ass look great and are also comfortable. And they're not totally embarrassing to wear in public.

Saturday pants EVERY DAY!!
