On Friday Open Thread

@Fitzsimmons Yeah, I'm I'm awe of the people who can soapbox all the time, but I just hope that if I can make equality a little more normal for a couple of the naive-but-well-intentioned people around me, that's cool. But then they tell me they "don't get" why a girl would like football (one example of many) and we're right back to raging. Baby steps

There's been so much feminism-related negativity around here today, can we possibly talk about ways where we've actually done something positive related to feminism? I'm the only girl (and one of the youngest people) in an office of about 30, and I'd like to think I've contributed to making it "not a big deal" that I'm a girl and I'm kind of good at computers. Thoughts?

On Alone in Venice For: 45 Minutes

I was lucky enough during my studying-abroad adventures to spend about 4 days alone in Venice in January (several years ago). I did not ride in a gondola (so pricey!) but I did have have hot mulled wine outside under a bridge with the owners of my hostel... I have very fond memories of those couple days. Venice in the winter is the best!

On 500 Days Alone In: The World

@JanieS A little late to the party, but I'd like to say, I'd love an article that I could relate to these days, by which I mean...

On Be the Change, Jerks

@parallel-lines Arggghaosdjf. As a 5-minute-early type person, I can't even count the hours I've spent waiting for 10-minute-late people to show up. The first 5 minutes are no biggie, but the 10 minutes after that are basically all spent wondering if I've been stood up, if I'm in the wrong place, or if people generally don't respect my time. So here I am getting exponentially more anxious, worried, depressed, etc., and then they breeze in eventually (typically without an apology). I think it is a respect issue more than anything else. Luckily I have a pretty much on-time boyfriend, so at least now we get to wait forever for other people together.

On Strong People With Short Arms

@NeverOddOrEven Props for the leg press. :) I totally go sit on one of those when I need a little self esteem boost after sucking at... every single arm-related exercise

On Strong People With Short Arms

@Nicole Cliffe This article is totally reassuring. I'll just comment that proportional to my weight, I leg-press a HELL OF A LOT MORE than my rather fit boyfriend. Why are so many fitness tests based on having a lot of upper body strength? Pullups, pushups, the abominable rope climb...

On The Betrayal of Bikini Bottoms, or, Meet the Butt’s Butt

@mirrored_lens Seriously, this. I have two suits from Lands' End Canvas and I adore them. Lots of mix-and-match options with differently-shaped bottoms. Plus they have a bunch in their sale section now for super cheap
