Help from bookish pinners? I was going to get my two nephews and niece book gifts for Christmas. For the wee boy (3 years) I was going to do Paddington Bear books plus the bear. For the girl (6) I was going to do Peter Rabbit plus a little rabbit. For the oldest boy (8), I'm stuck.

For both a book and a related gift. He's obviously a bit older so I don't think a plush toy would be up his alley. The only idea I have is Treasure Island plus maybe a pirate hat.

Any ideas for the 8 year old? I'm trying to stick to the classics. He's a good reader for his age but his passion lies in computer games. A few years ago he was crazy for Tintin but he's sorta grown out of that phase.

On Saying No to Juice

I've done juice cleanses twice. I agree that they aren't some magic remedy for your body, but for me it was nice to take a break from the unhealthy eating cycles I get into sometimes (dominated by my power foods - beer; carbs; melted cheese). It also helps reset your 'full' sensor. Afterwards I am eating better sized portions and feel better in general.

I'm also one of those people who gets motivated when money is involved and delivery is daily. So if I've already paid for it and it's on the doorstep, I'll drink it.

Unfortunately, I've never gotten a 'high' from cleansing. In fact, my coworkers still tremble in fear of the memory of the last cleanse. Apparently I was a raging lunatic! Although things got done because people were scared of setting me off...so there's that.

On Two Sides of Christian Fundamentalist Adoption

I'm not totally versed in the issue, but to me, part of the solution seems to be to support the orphanages and other systems in the home country. I would think a lot of these kids who have family remaining in their home countries may benefit more from a good orphanage and regular visits with family rather than being reprogramed in the US.

On I Am So Sorry You Probably Didn't Have An Orgasm That Time We Hooked Up

This plus your bacon picture make it very hard to believe you haven't gotten laid in 5 years. I could fix that in one evening.

On Remembering the Early Days of Jezebel with Anna Holmes

I was a Gawker commentor (back when it meant something, I swear!) when they launched Jezebel and remember being quickly disillusioned by the site. Although I still read it and appreciate some of the content (especially its spotlight on rape and reproductive issues), I think I was turned off by a 'the cool clique' in high school vibe about the writing staff.

On Selfie Lovers Forced to Explain Themselves

As a non-Millennial and decidedly uncool person, I take selfies because I vacation by myself and sometimes I want more than my toes in the pictures. The photo scourge of my generation, was the drunken-woman pile where everyone had their arms around each other, people were slouching and the camera flash washed the whole thing out.

I've been in a whiplash inducing on/off again relationship with a co-worker for the past 3 (ugh) years. On Sunday, I finally hit a breaking point where I don't feel a desperate need to talk to him all the time. I haven't talk to him in 5 days and that's the longest we've gone in 3 years. I'm hoping to take this momentum into a permanent break!
