@ladybee If you're going to BookPeople, definitely have lunch/breakfast at 21 Diner (maybe also peruse Waterloo Records, which is a few shops down?).

On The Middle Part Is Having Its Moment, Again, Somehow

Man, it had never even occurred to me to feel weird about my middle part. It just kind of seemed to be the default, right? No? Okay. ):

On Q: Why Does This Grape Tastes Like Cotton Candy? A: Because It Was Genetically Engineered to Taste Like Cotton Candy

@beetnemesis Also maybe we should all calm down about genetic engineering in general? If it's not scary to breed for desired traits, then why should it be scary to engineer those exact same traits? You're tinkering with genes in both cases.

On Ask a Clueless Lady

@harebell Yes to developing a sense of invulnerability / lack of caring what other people think! A couple years ago I had a surgery which left a pretty gruesome-looking incision wound, and I had a lot of fun walking around like "yes, I do have a big, gross cut on my neck. What about it? SAY SOMETHING". Plus, it was kind of a great conversation starter? I don't know. I kind of miss it now that it's unnoticeable, and feel like much less of a badass.

On Laird Hamilton Knows

@aphrabean I don't know what it *means*, but it is super normal for a person's chronotype to get earlier and earlier the older that they get (after adolescence/early adulthood, when night owl-ness peaks). Here, have a graph: http://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S1087079207000895-gr4.jpg. The number on the y-axis is the time halfway between sleep onset and the end of sleep, so a low MSF = early birds, and a high MSF = night owls. Children start out being early birds and gradually become more and more night owl-y until about 20, and it's all downhill from there.

Basically, we are all destined to become morning people. D:

On Pterodactyl Stork

One of my labmates was on a panel with George Church when he mentioned this plan (he also wants to create a woolly mammoth from modern elephant DNA, if I'm not mistaken). My labmate was like "Er... do you think maybe there might be some ethical issues?" and George Church just said "yep!" and then laughed maniacally. I love George Church so much.

But yeah, this is not even a little bit possible at the moment.
