I write books and paint my nails and play World of Warcraft and bake. Usually not at the same time.

On Horrible Things That Have Happened to Doctors on "Grey's Anatomy" Since 2005

@sophia_h I don't think she cares a lot about what's normal, but more about what makes people keep watching TV? I mean, I would like to watch a show about hospital people doing realistic hospital things (suitably edited to take out the lengthy waiting for results etc) but I suspect I'm in a minority.

On Women's Magazine Quizzes: A Digression

@ru_ri She so casually says, "So you don't pinch yourself" and "you might rip a few hairs out, it's not a big deal" and I cannot cope. I use a squeezy eyelash curler thing all the time and I think I would have flung it from me the first time it ripped out a single hair. I NEVER KNEW THIS WAS A POSSIBILITY.

On The ChocoVine Chocolate Red Wine Cake

I made that cake two days ago, for the first time! It was super delicious, especially with boysenberry-dark chocolate-ganache thingy. Next time I have a special occasion, I'm going to make two of them, plaster them together with ganache, and consider some sort of cream-based topping.

On The Mandoline: A Culinary History

Nicole, this is the best historical review of a kitchen utensil I have ever seen. Will you perhaps be covering the sad tale of the Swedish mother who invented the cheese grater for her consumptive son, under the guidance of an English quack who assured her that "piecemeal, in the smallest dimension, cheese will succor and revive your ailing child"?

On Beauty Q&A: Nails 101

@bevrockin Sally Hansen Insta-Dri anti-chip topcoat omg. I love this stuff. I used to use the Revlon quick dry, which was... fine, but the Sally Hansen spreads a lot thinner and really does set touch dry in 30 seconds. And if you've done basecoat etc, the manicure lasts forever - way longer than it takes me to get bored and start thinking about what I could do next.

On Scandals of Classic Hollywood: The Gloria Swanson Saga, Part Two

I hit kobobooks and typed "Swanson on" and the autoprompt gave me "Swanson on Internal Auditing: 'Raising the Bar'".

NO.
