I got engaged! And I have wasted SO MUCH time this week staring at my ring. Which I found one day through a link in a comment on an "Ask a..." on the 'pin!

So, I've been offered a position at San Diego State University. And I think I'm going to take it.

Okay, so I decided recently that I need to express myself more honestly and also that I need to pay more attention to the people around me and just get over myself. As such, here is an open letter to the Hairpin and all of the people in it.

Dear Hairpin:
Sorry I didn't write earlier. I was too busy reading you.
Thanks for the articles that have taught me more than any print magazine ever has, and that have motivated and inspired me as much as any person in my life ever has. And also for the ones that make me laugh, because seriously, even just today you've given me two enormous laughs that were really hard to stifle at the office. Your writers make me want to be better. They make me want to write everything there is to write and read all the time and chase the kind of life stories that are worth writing about.
Also, the comments section is the best. Seriously. You ladies (and gents) know this by now, but it's so friendly around here. It's like I've been invited to sit with the cool kids, while at the same time feeling like I'm in the library with my friends, looking for a great book and making fun of the cool kids. Some of you have been there for me in ways that my friends just aren't, from breakup advice to answering my random questions to recipes and countless other things, and (yes this might make me sound like a huge loser) it means a lot to me and I appreciate it.
And I know that the "new" Hairpin isn't everyone's favourite, but I'm still enjoying it, even if sometimes I can't read it as often as I'd like to. Emma and Jia are pretty damn awesome and I appreciate them doing their thing and still listening to our every comment and suggestion. And the return of the "Someone has commented on your thread!" emails make my inbox very, very happy.

So, like, thanks, everyone. You're the best and have a good weekend and <3 u.

i don't understand why in the fuck an educated person thinks it is possible to make a single summary of the state of an entire gender, social class, race, or sexual orientation.
