Great piece. One that would bring back similar memories for every reader, I think.

On Something Quiet, Something Just for You

@Urwelt I'm totally with you on the whispering. That's one of the things I like best about asmrmassage - she speaks softly (with a subtle Southern accent), but doesn't whisper.

On Something Quiet, Something Just for You

I was a frequent Ambien user before getting pregnant, but I've been trying to deal with my insomnia sans drugs while gestating, and ASMR videos have been an absolute godsend. I've always found head massages and hair brushing super-relaxing, so much so that even reading about them makes me sleepy. A few months ago, I decided to look for hair brushing videos on YouTube and discovered asmrmassage (I'm delighted to see that other commenters like her too!). A month later, TAL ran their story, and now this!

These external validators make the whole thing much easier to explain to my husband, who was at first skeptical of what he dubbed my 'hair porn' videos. (For several weeks, I didn't even tell him about the videos, because they seemed so weird and fetish-y. Then I figured he might wake up one night, see the glow of the iPad, and think I was watching actual porn in bed while he slept next to me, which seemed...way more embarrassing. So I went ahead and confessed my hair porn addiction, and now he just laughs at me.)

FWIW, I haven't taken a Unisom in over a month. These videos are the best.

On The BRCA Gene, Our Mother, And Our Insurance Plans: A Chat Between Sisters

"And even after Obamacare makes it illegal to refuse insurance based on pre-existing conditions, they can still charge you way more for it" - incorrect. Rate prices will be based on: 1. How fancy the plan is (every plan must have a baseline amount of coverage, but there will be 'Cadillac' plans that cover more and cost more), 2. Your age (old people will pay up to 3x as much as young people), and 3. Whether you smoke. Having a pre-ex won't enter into the equation after it goes into effect next year. (Just went online to verify the 3x stat, and found this on Obamacarefacts: "Health insurance issuers in the individual and small group markets would only be allowed to vary premiums based on age (within a 3:1 ratio for adults), tobacco use (within a 1.5:1 ratio and subject to wellness program requirements in the small group market), family size, and geography. All other factors – such as pre-existing conditions, health status, claims history, duration of coverage, gender, occupation, and small employer size and industry – would no longer be able to be used by insurance companies to increase the premiums for those seeking insurance.") Seven more months!
