On Commodity Fetish: This Is Not Really What a Feminist Looks Like

This was great!

I've also noticed that most companies like Feminist Apparel seem entirely unconcerned with where their products are sourced from. It's bit ironic to have something like "Feminism is for Everybody" printed on a shirt that might have been sewn by an underpaid teenage girl in a third-world sweatshop.

This was so great!

On Ask a Dietitian: Wine Time, Fruit Soup, Our Forbidden Lover (Diet Coke)

Yes, it's made of chemicals, but so are many things in the American diet at this point

I like the idea of this series but statements like this make it really hard for me to trust the author's expertise. Using "chemical" as a scary buzzword is a misunderstanding of basic science- ALL food is made of chemicals!

On Friday Open Thread

@Emby Something similar happened in my town a couple years ago- a truck overtook a guy on a bike and hit him without ever even noticing him. The cyclist died and the driver was never prosecuted, I guess under the logical that it was accidental.

On Friday Bargain Bin Presents: Presents

@Ophelia I am 5'11", there is no jumpsuit anywhere in the world that is not too short in the torso AND too short in the leg for me.

On Beauty Q&A: Miss Fancy Pants Goes to Work

Aw, fancypants, embrace your awesome closet! I'm in the sciences, so the usual wardrobe of the people around me tends towards sport sandals, t-shirts, and fleece jackets. I still wear my poofy vintage dresses and pencil skirts and metallic shoes, and why not? I get occasional "wow, you're so dressed up!" comments, but I don't think there are any significant negative reactions. Anyone who'd seriously judge you for wearing nice-ish clothes is a jerk, anyway.

On What Do You Wear Around the House?

@Emmanuelle Cunt Look for Goodwill Outlets in your area, my local one is $1.25/pound and I have like, 8 cashmere sweaters I've scored there. Leanne is right about them being gross and weird, though (then again, I like gross and weird).

On Long Distances, "Terribleness," and the Skin-Crawly Feeling

Holy crap, I don't think I've ever had such a visceral DUMP HIM DUMP HIM DUMP HIM reaction in my life. LW2, it sounds like you love the guy, but please listen to A Queer Chick, she is wise and very correct here.

On Beware White Tuna Sushi

@harebell Was it farmed salmon? They're fed weird crap and dyed red, which might make them taste off. There are also multiple salmon species, maybe there's one that disagrees with you? Or maybe it was just old?

On Beware White Tuna Sushi

@OhMyGoshYouGuys I second getting the Monterey Bay Aquarium guide. You can get a guide to fish with low mercury here: http://fishwise.org/images/lmc_combined_2011.pdf

In general, wild-caught, American, low-food-chain fish tend to be better than farmed, imported, or high-food-chain fish.
