On Writing, Depression and Learning How to Handle Attention: A Conversation with Allie Brosh

Totally off topic, but I keep getting the "Combat Bounce" sports bra ad on this page, and it's lined up perfectly with the eyes in Allie's drawing, so it's like she's staring at these weird disembodied boobs and smiling to herself.

On Writing, Depression and Learning How to Handle Attention: A Conversation with Allie Brosh

@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose It's at the top of my Christmas list. And also the only thing on the whol damn list whose sole purpose isn't to keep me warm.

On Writing, Depression and Learning How to Handle Attention: A Conversation with Allie Brosh

ALLIE BROSH!

This line stuck out to me: This has been the hardest thing. I hate getting gifts because I don't like the feeling of owing people or not showing enough gratitude. I feel this moral responsibility to give as much as I get.

But the thing is, people are responding *because* you're giving them something, and commenting to show you that you've affected them. You started this interaction, you brought all of this into the world, they're recognizing it. I mean, seriously, my life would not be nearly as entertaining without the ALOT, and reading message boards would be much, much more challenging without it.

On Interview with Sarah Bessey, "Jesus Feminist"

Aaaaaand sending this to every girl in my Bible study who ever had to talk me down about misreading Ephesians (the whole submission thing). Mutual submission is exactly right.

This is fantastic, and I am adding Sarah to my blogroll.

On "The truth is, the ten or twenty minutes I was somebody’s mother were black magic": Ariel Levy's "Thanksgiving in Mongolia"

I have no words except for thank you for posting this, and also, where the hell are my tissues?

On How My Obsession With Furnishing A Future Put Me Nearly $40,000 In Debt

@S. Elizabeth So sorry for your loss, S. Elizabeth. My ex's mom repainted the house when her husband died, and she said that it made a big difference for her. Odd how therapeutic a can of paint can be sometimes, but thank (insert name of something you find comfort in) that little things like that exist.

On 10 Years, Actually

@meetapossum I say "I hate Uncle Jamie!" all the time and nobody ever gets it. I say "Where the fuck is my fucking coat?" anytime I lose anything, which I'm sure COULD be confusing, but I live alone, so nobody else needs to decipher if I've lost the potato peeler or my actual coat.

On When Friends Have Babies

@MrsTeacherFace I can only speak from my own experience, but this essay didn't ring true for me at all. I can't say I feel like my friendship changed with any of my friends who've had kids in the time I've known them. I'm in awe sometimes because they manage to brush their hair to go to work when they've had 3 hours of sleep and I can barely manage a ponytail with only 6 hours of sleep, but that's about it. They ask about my life and I ask about theirs, same as always, except now we're talking about doctors appointments and the impossibility of eating a gyro with a sleeping baby strapped to your chest as much as we're talking about bands or the latest book I've become obsessed with.

On Interview with Dr. Susan Robinson, One of the Last Four Doctors in America to Openly Provide Third-Trimester Abortions

And I'm crying in public. Thank you for your work, Dr. Robinson, and thank you Jia for this interview.

On Advice For Writing; Or, What I Know So Far, Which Might Actually Be Nothing At All

First writing workshop is today, and I so so so needed this.

Also, I need a new idea generator. I used to just drive and get my best ideas, but now I don't have a car and I have to walk everywhere and it's cold and I don't know my way around so I'm not on autopilot. Help! My ideas are trapped!
