@Jane Marie And some people don't think it's a big deal, apparently. I was dating a guy and after hanging out on his bed for an hour noticed I had super itchy bites on the parts of me that were touching his bed. I was all"OMG, I don't want to panick you but I think you might have bedbugs" and apparently he already knew and all his roommates had them two and no one was really concerned. I'm sad to say I didn't break up with him immediately, but I wouldn't go over to his house and if he came over to mine, he had to walk immediately to the bathroom without stopping and put all his clothes in the bathtub for quarantine. On the plus side, instant naked guy, on the minus, I still get the heebie jeebies from it.

@je suis un ananas Do you have long hair? Long, not particularly shaped hair can definitely make you look like a student, as do ponytails. Something above the shoulder tends to be a bit more mature looking.

On Men Are Not Space Aliens, She Claims
@stuffisthings Lalaitha at least got to be a collection of a few stereotypes, which is better than most of the other women, I guess. The hardworking, driven child of Asian immigrants is a pretty common stereotype, and I have definitely seen an assumption from a certain type of middle aged men that young, pretty, smart South Asian women would salivate over dorky middle aged men as they were not "ruined" by feminism like white women. I was also annoyed that Lalaitha, who was strongly against having children for moral reasons, immediately reverts to "deep down all women really want babies" as soon as she falls in love. Lalaitha was kind of the last straw for me when I realized he introduced a potentially interesting female character only to have her do little but fawn over Walter repeatedly and unbelievably.

@stuffisthings I admit, I've only read Freedom, but I actually stopped reading about 3/4 of the way through because I couldn't stand his terrible stereotyped female characters. I know some people really like them, though.

@The Lady of Shalott There are MA-into-PhD programs up here, too. I know two people who enrolled in one (they both dropped into regular MA programs when they realized there was no real reason to get a PhD)

Today has not been a very good day. This morning I found out a senior person at work has been using me as a scapegoat for the last 4 months for her badly-managed project going $60,000 over budget, most of which had nothing to do with me. And now a few hours ago my father texted me to tell me that my grandfather had a fall and is dying. I don't like my grandfather very much and it's nowhere near a surprise, but it's still a bit upsetting.

@LeafySeaDragon My dad hates cats. He thinks they are stupid and useless and gross. However, he doesn't abuse cats, he just doesn't want one in the house, and used to chase them out of our yard when they'd come to poop in our sandbox. I love dogs like crazy, but I don't think someone's a bad person if they hate dogs. Different strokes, and all.

On Really Good Books About Real People: Part Three
@Sailor Jupiter Yesss, the Silver Brumby books! they weren't available in Canada, and the bookstore couldn't order them, so I had my cousin in Australia send me every book in that series.

On How to Throw a Shrimp Boil
@Flora Poste Crayfish are freshwater mini lobsters (basically), and shrimp are small versions of prawns.

@City_Dater I am potentially overidentifying with this guy, too. Maybe it's my baggage talking, but maybe he IS bringing up things and she's not hearing them because she's waiting for an all-out argument. The line about him not arguing even when she knows they disagree on something seems weird to me. If she knows they disagree, he must have let her know his opinions/preferences on the matter, so why is she hoping he'll fight about it?
