On It's All In Your Head: A Conversation About Being Sick Without a Diagnosis

I'm sympathetic to these women and their suffering. At the same time I'm wondering if the language the women are choosing to use doesn't contribute to the problem. "I basically literally told them I was a Ph.D. Candidate and not to disrespect me" conveys a certain hysteria and inability to frame thought. While my formal education can be described as "guttersnipe," I know when it's time to ditch the sloppy speech. Gender discrimination and risk of medical diagnosis is that time. It's my experience that the removal of modifiers from one's verbal and written communication leaves the message easier to parse. The word "basically" can always improve a sentence by its removal.

On The Shark Has Pretty Teeth, Dear: Why I Teach Women Self-Defense

On another tack, I welcome men who will speak out against Domestic Violence. If you have not experienced the power of human compassion and a call to reason against rape culture, please watch Sir Patrick Stewart, (here and many others) http://youtu.be/TqFaiVNuy1k

On The Shark Has Pretty Teeth, Dear: Why I Teach Women Self-Defense

The somewhat awkwardly titled modelmugging.org teaches a very natural technique for self-defense, emphasizing moves to use when pinned on the ground or grabbed from behind. Lots of knee-to-groin, clasped-hands-as-weapon moves. And shouting No! The book had a section on avoiding panic if one is shot, and what to say to police or rescuers to show you're not the attacker. As I think about it, there was a very canny section on explaining one's perhaps- excessive use of force to a judge, if one is later sued by the attacker. Need to read that book again myself.

On Sestina About Hangovers For a 25-Year-Old From a Person Over 40

Meh to this. Tone-deaf, rude and high-handed. Everyone knows an over-40 punk that doesn't know anything. Love, Older Than That.

On Friday Open Thread

@DoMark what an adventure! Wish I'd seen this earlier-you could consider donating your hair to Locks of Love. They make wigs for kids who've lost their hair from chemo. I believe the hair they use is 10 inches long. If it's shorter they donate it to other wig makers.

On Remembering the Early Days of Jezebel with Anna Holmes

@districter Samesies. And it took forever to become a Starred Commenter, then, once I'd finally won it, it seemed the rest of the site had lost its bite. Truly, #scottbaioruinseverything

On Viagra: The New Heating Pad

Anybody else get the feeling the Viagara people would like to make more money? And aren't terribly interested in testing first? Who can say this is safe for your reproductive system, long-term?

On Internet Work and Invisible Labor: An Interview With NPR's Linda Holmes

Without points of reference from the subject, this story is annoyingly vague. I sort of sometimes kinda lost something like um interest in it. Kinda.

On A Plan for Dealing With This

Really disdainful of healthy, BMW-driving, iPhone-toting, planned-community denizen. Read the story expecting something of value to "happen" to this dullard. Proof that not having any real problems makes one insane.
