On Friday Open Thread

I work at a liquor store, and last week a woman came in asking for "this cream liquor that comes in peach and strawberry, and it's in a round bottle, and the lid is bigger than it needs to be?". My coworker had no idea, but I practically went "Ooh! Ooh! I know!", since OBVIOUSLY it was Qream, which I knew from reading so much about it here. Unfortunately it wasn't in stock (I had looked it up when I first started there in January), but apparently there are practical life applications of the Hairpin.

On The First Holiday Negotiating In-Law (or Almost-In-Law) Needs and Wants

@iceberg This is what my parents did. Moved across the country for my dad's grad school, which also meant lack of money. All factors that contributed to a reasonable "Nope, can't fly to California to see either family" situation.

On There's a New "Les Miz" Trailer

@siniichulok To be fair, his and Helena Bonham Carter's characters are basically the comic relief of the show.

On Things I Learned About Children on a Recent Flight Out of Orlando

@Daisy Razor My mom used to give us Benadryl before a flight, and told us it was to help keep our ears from popping. Only years later did I find out it was mostly to make us drowsy and knock us out for the duration.

On Doubleplusungood

I can see what he means, but I think Hurricane Sandy is a bad example for this trend. There was a reason behind the nicknames this time, since there were two or three storms colliding and that contributed to the overall intensity.

On Mizzzzzz

@maybe partying will help I just got my Masters degree and really wish that there was a prefix akin to PhDs for it. I would love to be "Master [last name]", or "Mistress" I suppose, although that title has its own connotations.

On We Wouldn't Have to Eat Kraft Dinner

@jen325 I would eat Easy Mac somewhat frequently in undergrad and it was fine, but when I came home for the summer and tried to use up my leftover packets it turned out globby and gross. I feel like it must have magical dorm-only properties.

On Ask Ladies About Engagement Rings

I think that it largely depends on what the ring means to the individual person/couple. I'm not engaged/married but I'm always intrigued by discussions like this, and have come to the conclusion that I like the idea of an engagement ring for sentimental purposes. I currently wear a ring that my mom gave me (she wore it as a teenager/young adult), and I like having that symbol or thought of her to carry around with me. I also have a ring that I bought myself as a "self-vow" to remind me of my awesomeness when I'm feeling down. So to have a ring from my boyfriend as a symbolic token of the relationship is a nice idea. Essentially, I think as long as you consider what you want as opposed to what society says you're supposed to want and decide accordingly, then there's really no universal right answer.
