On Baby Swaddling for Evil and Profit

My husband's uncle kept trying to swaddle his girls until they were 7 or 8. Every time one of them looked like she was fixing to have a temper tantrum, Scott would earnestly come at her with a throw blanket. When we made fun of him for it, he said, "But it worked so well when they were babies!"

On Farewell, Jane

You know, I've never met Jane before, but sometimes I have dreams about her. Not in a weird way, but when I find myself embroiled in a tricky dream-problem, sometimes a sensible, funny, compassionate problem solver will show up and nonchalantly say just the right thing to make the problem seem like a non-issue. I always think of that dream element as a little piece of Jane Marie worming its way into my subconscious. Thanks, Jane! Seriously, thank you.

On Getting Guns

At my 3-year-old's behest, I started taking archery lessons this year. Guns have never seemed very cool to me, but I've gotten super into bows and arrows. Archery's kind of meditative like games you make up when you're bored: trying to throw little balled-up pieces of paper into a trash can, for instance. I've never shot a gun, but maybe it's the same kind of thing?

On That Baby Wants to Break You Up

I have a 4 year old and people are always asking me why I don't have another kid: "you guys are awesome parents," they say; "your kid is an awesome kid," they say. The truth is, while I love my husband and my daughter's the greatest human person in history, I don't know that my relationship with my husband could withstand another kid. And we're totally the people that everybody looks at and says, "they're SOLID." It's like I have PTSD.

On Write It!

@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose It's almost like she's advocating for not being dramatic in the most dramatic way possible. Which doesn't help anybody like her more, certainly....

On Write It!

Dramatic? Yes. But does she have a point? Also, yes.

On How to Boil Eggs

Or, OR! You could do like I did and throw one of these egg timer thingies in the water with the eggs, and when that sucker is black, they're done! And they taste like hard boiled eggs! And they're $7: http://www.amazon.com/SCI-Scandicrafts-Inc-Egg-Timer/dp/B0000CFGB5

On Beauty Q&A: Mystifying Dress Codes & The Great Bra Hunt

Whew! I seriously love me some Jane Marie beauty advice. Zit talkin' time: has anybody ever tried taking zinc supplements for breakouts? I read about it last night a little and I'm thinking about trying it because my skin's been sort of disastrous lately. I'm about thiiiiis close to going to the dermatologist for a Retin-A prescription but my skin's super sensitive and I wanted to try something a little gentler first. Zinc? Anybody?

On The Void Is Staring Across You

My favorite theory about the end of the universe is the Boltzmann Brain hypothesis, which says that as entropy (disorder) in the Universe increases, it might arrange itself into something so complicated, it's self aware. A brain, basically. Our universe might become a brain. A BRAIN. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/15/science/15brain.html?pagewanted=all
