This article really runs me the wrong way. First off, I really don't think there is any rule that demands that people must be literal ALL the time when they speak. I mean really, we say "that's awesome!" quite a lot. Is it really? Is it really awesome? But mostly I object to the disgust aimed at young women. There have been linguistics studies conducted around young women and the way they speak, which have hypothesized that a lot of the tonality and phrasing revolve around seeming harmless and inconsequential. In other words, a social defense mechanism. I think to simply dismiss the way they speak a silly, or dumb, is erasing their experiences, and not addressing the environment that causes them to speak this way.
