On Really Good Books: Scandals of Classic Hollywood Edition

'Whom a respectable man could take to an operate.' This is the most terrifying typo ever, I have an image of the bloke from The Human Centipede on a date with Julia Roberts.
(PS Great column!)

On Pin Pals

I fear my life is too boring for me to be an interesting correspondent. I'll probably end up sending synopses of Mad Men episodes, cut out of the TV guide.

On Really Good Books About Real People: Part Four

@Cat named Virtute Oh yeah, CH was heartbreaking (especially since I lived in Cambridge for several years, I could picture it all so clearly). I think maybe that's more a criticism that carries to later books perhaps- I remember particularly in One Good Turn, all the other people with a viewpoint seemed much more interesting than Jackson. But yes! it's awesome! (I should be less of a downer!)

@MEGA VENUTIAN SPACE SCORPION I LOVE It's Not The End of The World. Especially the first and last ones- I laughed so much and then couldn't sleep because I felt like if it was the apocslypse I probably wouldn't notice either. Have you read Behind the Scenes at the Museum?

@l'esprit de l'escalier Yeees exactly! She says it's 'alcohol abuse' not 'alcoholism', and I felt bad being sceptical about that, since she's clearly had a tough go-round, but flip-flopping between general statements intended to show she's the same as everyone else, like 'two-thirds of college students go to a party in their first week' (no shit), and on the other hand stuff about 'my mother came to visit and I kept vomiting in the street' sort of undermines that category she's gone for.
(and ha!, I know what you meant :) )

On Something Something Canada

@Heat Signature But then bitch Mary ruined her marriage to David-off of-Cold Feet, which is a million times worse. ZERO SYMPATHY. (Seriously, get rid of your Marys, they are awful).
