On Mad Men, Season 7 Premiere: Is This Where the Fire Starts?

I've really enjoyed Jen Doll's writing, so please take this as a compliment knowing that she can do more. Can we move away from the blow-by-blow recap and focus more on interpretive thought? I already know what happened because I watched it. I want to know what Jen/The Hairpin thinks about it all.

On Capital Children's Choir Covers Crystal Castles, "Untrust Us"

Is this the same group that recorded Lily Allen's "Chinese"? Freaking beautiful.

On My So-Called Post-Feminist Life

Shutterbabe is a really, really tough read. She got slammed for it too. I don't know. I guess while I agree with so much of what she has to say (in the book), my personality is practically her exact opposite, so I fail to understand many of her choices. This is not a reflection of her being male or female. Just is.

Anyway, she's pretty much a lightning rod in the photography world. And elsewhere.

On Boyfriends' Mothers, "Compassion," and Les Misérables

@Linette and @RNL - LW5 here. I wrote Ask A Lady (or dude? Can't remember) some time ago in a fit of pique and then forgot all about it. As for the official Lady and Dude advice, honestly, I feel kind of relieved. I knew the phrasing of my letter was over the top, and since they didn't sincerely attempt to answer me, I'm off the hook. The point I was trying to make was not that I'm better than assholes in relationships. It was that even assholes find happiness in relationships, at least some of the time.

BUT. You two gems have a lot of wisdom that I'm taking to heart. Thank you, pinners.

On Solange Knowles, "Losing You"

@v=ir It can be done grossly, but I'd save my ire in this case. Google Le Sapeurs, the men featured in this video.

On No Doubt Featuring Major Lazer and Busy Signal, "Push and Shove"

@hazeljane7 that's a pretty cheap comment. Gwen Stefani's sense of style is genuine. She was rocking elements of this look way before No Doubt made it big.

On "Scott Stapp in general."

Can we all agree that shitty music existed always? Popular music history cannot be divided into lump years that are "good" and (always later) "bad." Writers of pieces like this cherry-pick the singles that make their point. The late '90s/early '00s had some shit rock music, Creed included, but it also had Pavement, Wilco, the resurgence of Elvis Costello and a ton more.

On "Scott Stapp in general."

@meetapossum Now that's how you write a concept concert review piece. Our Rumpus writer (b.1987) should study that.

On Pop Culture 2012 Recap, Week Three: A Gliding Lana

@CrescentMelissa You do yourself a disservice to preemptively poo-poo "The Artist." It made me realize that all George Clooney does is mug, basically.
