Thank you. This is so lovely.
References to moms as inherently being out of step with things that are complex or interesting are kind of exhausting me.
It is absolutely worth listening to a bunch of covers of this on Spotify. Scud Mountain Boys of course does the best one -- OF COURSE -- but there are some great, like, 80s Russian pop covers as well. And of course German. So awful and amazing.
It is a nearly perfect song.
@TheBourneApproximation This is literally the only thing that has made me smile all day, including the brownie I ate for breakfast.
@lookuplookup Aged lurker would be into this as well.
I was thinking about recommending this song to someone who's not a huge fan of folk music, and then I got to "the tears ran down my spine" and I knew how that discussion was going to go. Why you gotta be so anatomically impossible, Phil Ochs?
@blueblazes Maybe daycare is less necessary when unemployment is higher, since there's someone to take care of kids at home, and no money to pay for ooutside care.
Nicole, totally have been there. I burned my 4yo son's arm badly making brownies with him (brownies! as a special mother-son domestic cozy time!), and using a makeshift double boiler that spilled boiling water in slow motion down the counter toward him. He just sat there, white and silent, in the back of the car as we drove him to the emergency room. He still has a scar. I think all parents have been there.
On Plot Foiled
@bitzy Factitious disorder. Facetious disorder would be a good name for people whose humor is a coping strategy, though.
