Being Maleficent

We were a motley band of homeschoolers, playing on a sunny back porch while our mothers had a Bible study inside. We had been warned against coming in and interrupting, so we scuffed our Keds against the floor boards and broke sticks into little logs. Most of the girls wore ankle-length skirts or jumpers. They all had long hair, except me. I had mine cut short because I wouldn’t let my mom brush it, and she wanted it out of my face.

One of the older girls, her hair pulled up in a large bow that matched the trimming on her socks, glanced over us. “Let’s put on a [...]

India Shawn, "I'm Alive"

Saint Heron, the first annual installment of R&B compilations Solange Knowles will be releasing from her very own label, Saint Records, is basically jam after jam after jam—but it's this life-affirming-for-a-frigid-morning track, from L.A. singer-songwriter India Shawn, that I've had on repeat. (See also: Cassie's "Indo" and Solange's own "Cash In." The whole thing's on Spotify, too.)

News From the Knowleses

Yesterday Beyoncé announced that her self-directed Beyonceumentary will air on HBO in February, and today her sister Solange's seven-track EP True — containing the perfect and amazing song/video "Losing You" — became available for purchase on iTunes.*

And although this piece about the Beyonceumentary (linked above) already starts out with so many wonderful "Beyoncé," "Beyoncé" mentions, it's only at the "said Beyoncé" part that it gets really good. What said the Beyoncé? Who dares awaken the Beyoncé?? I am the last Beyoncé.

*It's good!

99 Problems but Guest Blogging Ain't One

Good morning! Emma and Jia are both traveling today, and I am beyond excited to take a break from obsessively reading super intellectual think pieces on Solange and Jay Z and guest blog here today! Please say hi on Twitter!  But seriously, do you guys think Matthew and Tina will step in and make the peace now??

Janelle Monae feat. Solange, "Electric Lady"

We can add "I'll reprogram your mind, come on, get in/ my spaceship leaves at 10" to the many great lines Janelle Monae has belted out in her career, and we can give this horn-riff breakdown an early lead for the greatest sequence in a new track, probably. (No offense to Celine's plucky strings or Sleigh Bells' banger, if that's your thing.) Monae's new album is due out a week from today. [MissInfo]
