Finance 101: Shoebox Savings and Baby Bonds

I'd really like to have a savings account, and I've tried twice so far to keep one with Bank of America, but I had to close it both times because I couldn't keep up with the minimum monthly balance/monthly deposit, which resulted in my being charged a bunch of fees. I now have a checking account with Charles Schwab, which earns a tiny amount of interest, but I'd still prefer to have a separate savings account, too. My question: is there a savings account out there that won't require me to deposit a certain amount per month or maintain a certain balance? I would like to save, but I have [...]

Finance 101: Salary Negotiation and the Profitable Blog

I have a question about how to negotiate a salary. I am a physician at a great hospital. I love the people with whom I work, and I find my specific job fulfilling — I could make a lot more money doing something else, but this is what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. I have a rather unique niche and I think I would be difficult (but obviously not impossible) to replace. I've worked at this hospital during my residency since I graduated from medical school. My superiors seem to think I do a good job and want me to work here for the [...]

The Best States, If You Are a Lady With a Job

So what are the best states for working women overall? To get at this, we created another new metric, the "Women’s Earnings Index," which we based on four key variables: women’s share of the labor force, average wage levels for women, women’s share of total state wages, and the location premium. The clear winner is the District of Columbia. It's followed by Maryland (with an index score of .931), Nevada (.873), Massachusetts (.863), Rhode Island (.843), and Delaware (.838). In the bottom position we find Wyoming (which scores .103).

The Atlantic tells us how good or bad we have it, ladies, depending on where we live. Tiny places seem [...]
