The Evolution of Playgirl: Reviewing Three Decades of Covers

How to Be a Playgirl, a Barnes and Noble Nook Snap by Mental Floss editor Jessanne Collins, is a short—just 24 pages—and highly readable recounting of the highlights of her year-long experience as an editor of Playgirl magazine. Playgirl “debuted in the summer of 1973 and was billed as a sex-positive, fun-oriented feminist response to Hugh Hefner's empire”; when Collins started there in 2007 and until it shuttered in 2008, it bore only a slight resemblance to the original.

In a recent two-hour conversation, Collins and I pored over the covers of select issues of Playgirl. It’s a fascinating journey to go from the first issue, in [...]

Rethinking Your Sex Salon Furnishings

Do you think you have successfully furnished your sex salon because you have put together your IKEA bed and hung up some Xmas twinkle lights? Well, here’s someone for you to contemplate: Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia from 1729-1796. Catherine the Great’s sex salon was decorated with pieces like this (quite NSFW after the jump!):

Ciara feat. Nicki Minaj, "I'm Out"

Add this to your queue of summer jams that are also, conveniently, ladies-get-up-on-the-floor anthems. I'll still take Beyoncé's "walk with a vengeance" line on "Grown Woman" over this Ciara (Ci-a-ra!) hook, but it's spastically catchy nonetheless, and Nicki continues her long tradition of saving some of her best verses for guest spots. Also, the final minute is summer pop perfection.

(This is a lyric video. Very likely NSFW.)

Okay Big Boi, We're Ready

Big Boi's second solo album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, is out TOMORROW and we just want to sleep from right now until that moment so it'll get here faster. (Thanks, Grandpa Bill, for the lesson in "The Best Things About Naps.") You've already heard the album's monstrous banger, "In The A," featuring T.I. and Luda, he's released another single with Kid Cudi (he of "Day 'N' Nite"), and today you can hear his collaboration with Jai Paul and Little Dragon on "Higher Res." Be most grateful for this latest track not because it's great — it's "meh" — but because it provides an excuse to [...]

The To Do List: Aubrey Plaza Remembers the '90s

The To Do List, a comedy about a high school valedictorian seeking her sexual awakening in the summer before college, looks outrageous, and it's slightly off-putting to see Aubrey Plaza actually smile, but we have to acknowledge any movie that features a skort-in-sex moment. (Does anyone out there still own a skort?) The red band trailer (NSFW!) seems to sum things up quite succinctly, but it's in theaters July 26.
