The Doll-Head Wine Glass Halloween Bonanza

Reader Meryl S. writes:

I've been dying to make some of the doll head wine glasses like in the tutorial you posted, and realized that a Halloween party was the perfect opportunity for something that creepy. I got the dolls from the Goodwill Outlet where they were only $1 apiece. Score! Some friends (and fellow Hairpinners) and I had a few pre-party craft parties to cut the dolls apart, turn them into cups and paint their faces in various ways. Making them was super fun, plus totally disgusting to see inside some of the dolls that kids had attempted to "feed." Kids are gross.

We bought some plastic [...]

Chivalry Alive in the Midwest

"It's a very original case to say the least." —A 48-year-old Wisconsin man in a mask attacked the 26-year-old female exchange student he'd been hosting, hoping to tie her up, leave her, and then come back as his regular self and "save" her. Except he wasn't strong enough and eventually had to run away, so she called the cops, they figured him out, and now he's in jail. Also, he's married and has children. Not sure what the saddest part of this story is, but it might be that most people live their whole lives without anyone plotting to tie them up and then rescue them. No, [...]

"If You Have Friends, Get Them the Kind of Scary Books That Friends Would Like"

The wonderful Neil Gaiman explains All Hallow's Read.

(Don't read The House of Leaves, though. Too scary. Too heavy, also. And too requiring-of-you-to-turn-the-book-upside-down-sometimes.)

Witch's Brew

The hardest part of this recipe is where do you get the dry ice? And also the apple juice should obviously be bourbon. And also, what do you think his face looks like? Jon Hamm? Me too!

"A lot's changed since that Jane left."

City officials are thanking the more than 100 volunteers coordinating and performing patrols around the city for the low number of fires this evening… Around 50 volunteers manned the police mini-stations, while 100 others performed patrols throughout the city, either on foot or by car… The number of fires thus far is down from the eight reported on the day before Halloween in 2010 and a dramatic decrease from the city's high of 200 fires on Devil's Night in 1994.

Where I grew up, all the cool kids spent the night before Halloween setting fires, spray painting stuff, and Nair-ing people. (I spent it pre-grounded, usually.) It looks like [...]

Happy Halloween, Jerks (in NYC)

If you're in New York, don't forget about the meetup tonight. I hear Edith is dressing up as an extra bartender this time, someone found out where to buy all the dry ice in the city, and there should be plenty of snacks. What are you going as? I'm gonna be "Lonely Woman in California Who Just Found Out She Doesn't Even Live in a Neighborhood Where Children Trick-or-Treat and This Candy Isn't Going to Eat Itself, so… "

Actually Scary Movies

I love scary movies. I've been watching them since I burst from my mother's chest like the monster in Alien. And October used to be an exciting month for me, because on any given night I could turn on the TV and find a classic horror flick – Halloween is always in rotation, and you don't have to travel too many channels to find something from the A Nightmare on Elm Street series — but lately … it hasn't been enough. Don't get me wrong, I adore Halloween, Psycho, and the tried and true favorites. It's just that I've seen them roughly six thousand times each, and I can anticipate each glint of the [...]

"Before You Die, You See"

I grew up in a Connecticut suburb and had a very small group of sheltered friends. We liked being sheltered, because it allowed us to do our homework without the distraction of boyfriends and popularity. But the lack of boyfriends, popularity, and having any kind of interesting experiences started to weigh on us by the time we were seniors in high school. That year we started seeing bands, being slightly less responsible, and occasionally (twice) having parties where more than six people showed up. It was around that time, the year was 2002, that my friends and I went to a Rusted Root concert at a nearby college. It [...]
