The Asparagus Witch

"When a spear breaks it is the equivalent of the death card in Tarot readings. It is not necessarily a bad thing because it indicates a parting of ways." Jemima Packington is the once and eternal Asparamancer, and this year she forsees not one but two royal pregnancies, and that an animal will win an acting award. She doesn't do private consultations, but she will be putting in an appearance at this year's British Asparagus Festival, on April 23. [Via]

Your Destiny, Your iPhone (-Pad, -Pod Touch)

Some of us at The Hairpin have a crippling weakness for fortune-telling, so when an evil witch (scojo) wrote in asking us to plug the app she and her numerologist friend spent six hundred years months putting together … it did not require much inner debate. Here we go: "The app is called Cosmic Mates and you can run compatibility on your loved one(s), friends, and family. It rates your relationship! Eek! Just think, how many people could avoid writing into to A Lady or A Dude or A Queer Chick or A Married Dude?" Wait a second, evil witch! We need those questions; why are [...]

Five of Cups

The day my husband announced he was leaving, two days before Halloween, a pack of Rider Waite tarot cards arrived in the mail. Tarot folk wisdom suggests that instead of seeking out your own cards, you should wait for them to come to you. (Although I don’t think deliveries from Amazon were what anyone had in mind.)

Of course I had ordered the cards myself. When I picked out the pack, I was already predicting my need for them. My husband was on tour in Australia, operating concert lighting for a musician's world tour. Most times his absence didn’t bother me — I knew what I was in for [...]

The Secret Free Tarot Card-Reading Portal

My favorite way to waste time at work is by worrying about my future. Horoscopes are one way to get my fix, but better is Llewellyn.com's secret free tarot card-reading portal, which I stumbled across years ago, and which I've since visited daily to learn about the mysterious men and bad omens about to influence my destiny.

It's well designed, easy to navigate, and about as good as a free online tarot card-reading site could conceivably be: You get your choice of nine different card decks, ranging from Llewellyn's signature deck to the druid-inspired "Sacred Circle Tarot" to the glitzy "Gilded Tarot," and your pick of spreads (the [...]

The Psychic

A friend had gifted me a reading (or séance? or session?) with her psychic/life coach. It wasn’t my birthday. It wasn’t Christmas, or Hannukah, or any holiday that I knew of. The only thing that had happened recently was that my friend’s book had been launched. So maybe she was celebrating her book launch by giving me this present. But you know what? I didn’t even think about it much after asking her if she was sure she wanted to spend that kind of dough on me (“Go,” she’d urged, “Dr. Stayci gives good advice”). What’s so strange about a friend giving you a present, right? And, assuming [...]

Telling the Future, and Miranda July's The Future

Fans of Miranda July and/or internet horoscope machines might enjoy the website for her new film, The Future, which comes out July 29 and is about two people who adopt a stray cat. The trailer is below, or you can head directly to the oracle, which has nothing to do with movies, and which actually gives terrible advice.
