“Break Free” vs. “Oops!… I Did It Again”: A Scientific Music Video Comparison of Girls In Space

On Tuesday, tiny pop star and popular Taco Bell order Ariana Grande released a music video for her latest single "Break Free," which is set in outer space and features an outsize amount of backstory yet does not in any way reference Britney Spears' important 2000 cultural contribution in "Oops I Did It Again." This posed for me an irresistible opportunity to examine each video in exhaustive comparative detail.

The General Deal

Break Free

The song is a breakup track and the video is set in space. One might argue that space is the last place that a person might actually want to “break [...]

Rihanna On My Mind: Chatting About the "Pour It Up" Video

The other day, after Rihanna's new video for "Pour It Up" came out (embedded below, NSFW), we started chatting about it on Twitter. There was too much to say. Here, we discuss why Rihanna is better than Miley, why Rihanna is better than Nicki, and why Rihanna is better than Jesus.

This conversation took place in a Google Hangout and has been condensed and edited.

Sarah Nicole Prickett: Hii, does this work?

Ayesha Siddiqi: Yes! I see you both on here.

SNP: So this Rihanna video is AMAZING, but let's start from Instagram. Riri’s instagram is how I know she's a girl's girl and it's why I love her. When I started following [...]

Banks, "Waiting Game"

The sultry and vulnerable-voiced LA-based singer Banks has only released four original tracks to date, but each song has been strong, and this latest is the strongest. "Waiting Game" was produced by the great SOHN, who pushes buzzing industrial-strength synth up against Banks's dark, delicate vocals; it makes perfect sense that she's touring with the Weeknd this fall.

Also, if a mash of A$AP Rocky's "Thuggin' Noise" with Britney Spears "Everytime" sounds like it's up your alley (it is the dictionary definition of my alley) here's the newly released, purely delightful "It's Hemsworth, Bitch" edit, and for old times, the very rare "Born To Make You Bling" remix [...]

Britney Spears' "Criminal" Video

Wow. Britney and her real-life boyfriend Jason Trawick star in an unexpectedly violent and transfixing five-minute short film about crime and passion. He's got a few too many hilarious fake tattoos (does his chest say "Goose"?), and she puts on an astonishing amount of perfume, but otherwise, A+, could not be better.

Also: The Roots featuring Big K.R.I.T., "Make My."

The Lost Britney Spears Album

Buzzfeed has a great story on Original Doll, the Britney Spears album that never was, with a single called "Mona Lisa" that surfaced 10 years ago just once on radio and then was buried along with the rest of the album material in a fascinating period when the pop star simultaneously avowed control while losing it. After getting injured on tour for In the Zone, which the pop star called “the filtered-down version of Original Doll, or the more pop version," Spears wrote on her blog:

“I’ve actually learned to say ‘NO!’… With this newly found freedom, its [sic] like people don’t know how to act around me. Should [...]

All the New Music Is Out (Mazzy Star, San Fermin, CHVRCHES, Britney)

Welcome to the new week and a welcome crop of fresh music! NPR's First Listen has some great stuff streaming right now. First is "Seasons of Your Day," Mazzy Star's low-key return after 17 years of influential absence. Second is the self-titled debut from San Fermin, whose single "Sonsick" I'll just never shut up about; third up is the first full-length from CHVRCHES, called "The Bones of What You Believe." I saw them on Saturday, and when the audience was yelling compliments at lead singer Lauren Mayberry (a tiny Jenny Lewis-style heartbreaker), she very sweetly said, "I'm sorry! I can't hear you [...]

The Other 5150

Over at Grantland, Molly Lambert methodically walks us through the Amanda Bynes saga in the most matter-of-fact tone possible, and the effect is appropriately disquieting:

Those under a 5150 hold are promised "dignity, privacy, and humane care," but in the case of stars like Spears or Bynes, the first two are almost always breached. Another witness, who says they saw Bynes's arson and made a 911 call, claimed that Bynes was "creating a makeshift explosive" by placing a burning cloth over the mouth of the gas tank. The fire department put out the flames before the gas tank had a chance to explode. A normal 5150 lasts 72 hours, [...]

Britneys of the Plain: Cormac McCarthy Describes the Video for "Work Bitch"

Head west and drive south towards the Gulf of California and leave the highway and keep driving towards the flattest expanse. Here is the land you seek. Sand lays thick on the desert plain, a layer of rust extending to the horizon. The only hint of border is a distant mountain range. This is the desert where those birthed at the shift of the century have come to give into their thirst. Very few made it out of the ‘90s and into the 21st century alive with their integrity, hits, and full head of hair, in tact. It is said that nothing can survive out here. Except for [...]

What Happened at the VMAs? As Always, the Answer Is "Everything" and Also "Nothing"

Good morning! The MTV Video Music Awards happened last night, and if you missed them and would care to catch up on the performances (Kanye, Drake, 20 minutes of Timberlake with 1 minute of N*SYNC, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and of course, Miley) you can stream them all here, or alternately watch this 13-year-old video of Britney Spears performing "Satisfaction/Oops I Did It Again" at the awards show and speculate about when the pop pendulum might swing away from "clumsy white appropriation of black culture" (although: has it ever?) and back towards ladies who can work it out on a good old-fashioned [...]

I Dream of Britney

In 2008 I started a single topic Tumblr that never went anywhere. It was called I Dream of Britney, and the idea was that readers would submit their celebrity-laden fantasies and nightmares (no one ever posted but me, though). At that point, Tyra Banks was my subconscious’s most frequent famous guest star. Those dreams usually involved some sort of America’s Next Top Model scenario in which she was judging me and finding me insufficiently fierce and overly dumpy.

Though the Tumblr was named for Britney Spears (and she’s apparently a very common dreamscape fixture), I had never had my own dream about her until this past Saturday. [...]
