Friday Open Thread

How we all holding up right now? I'm home in Texas, ready for the first wedding of the summer (if the ringbearer's not a puppy I may leave, though) and following Galactic Rabbit's advice to stay easy. If you're in need of a diversion this weekend we've got lots to catch up on: Mad Men, the glass closet of women's sportscarrot-coconut macaroons, chronic illness thoughts from a witch, solidarity with Mormon lifestyle bloggers, Lacoste An Arm and a Leg, memories of a best-of-all-time friend lost to cancer, a letter to Shailene Woodleythe best essay about taking a cat to a pet psychic you'll ever read, two graduates in wonderland, and an astrology drinking game. Have a Kanye-smile of a Friday, and we'll see you back next week.

Did I know you were from Texas? I must have. Texas produces the best women.

Today's good because Hannibal's getting a S3, I'm in the running for a pretty good job and I'm going out tomorrow with a woman.

@Danzig! Texans represent.

@adorable-eggplant Saying hi. I'm currently sweating like nobody's business, but tomorrow, I will be drunkenly hanging out in a river, so I guess I'll be okay.

@coolallison Tell me you are tubing, such that I can live vicariously! Tubing in the Frio is on my top 5 summer joys list.

ETA: also, this damn humidity, am I right? Whyyyy.

@adorable-eggplant Unofficially. We'll be by the Guadalupe, but we're not doing an official float where you pay for a good tube and they pick you up and whatnot. More of a... try to stay in a smallish area but still float around and drink beer.

@coolallison Oh man, that sounds purrfect. I'm trying to convince my boyfriend that we need to get a wading pool for the porch to sit around and sip beers in, but he is dragging his heels and making valid points about standing water/mosquitoes, so it's a standoff so far.

well written@t

Inundate me with wine cocktail recipes pleez. I just had vinho verde for the first time and, classy lady that I am, was thinking that it would probably be tasty with juice of some kind.

Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)

@adorable-eggplant here's a "recipe":
Do not mix vinho verde with tablecloth, jeans, or what's supposed to be your lucky hockey shirt that JUST came out of the laundry.

oh wait that is not a recipe, sorry

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) No but it did make me laugh, which is worth quite a bit, since I have the remainder of this painfully long Friday between me and the remainder of my v.v. in the icebox (which I will be careful not to spill on myself because every drop is fizzy and precious).

Five things I liked this week:

1. That picture of a baby jaguar or whatever cat, I'm really not picky about species as long as it is cat
2. Shutting down someone at work who has had it coming for a while
3. Shutting down someone on Facebook who thinks #BringBackOurGirls isn't important, because there are poor people in America who are more important (but he doesn't bother to help them himself)
4. I ate a really good chocolate cupcake
5. Kevin Durant won MVP!!

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)
1. My boss let me have a half day today.
2. I worked out this week for the first time in over a month and lived to tell.
3. For the first time in about 5 months at my new job, I was invited to join people on a lunch outing.
4. I am about to load up a cooler with a bunch of beer for a weekend cabin trip with some friends.
5. My little doggie is currently looking up at me with the cutest face and I'll have to brb because we obviously need to cuddle for a minute.

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)
1. I am moving out of my mouse-infested but otherwise fine apartment at the end of the month
2. A two week vacation with sister and lovely niece and nephews is starting on Monday, during which I will see my best friend for the first time in a year
3. Soft, creamy, aged goat cheese
4. That Doug Fister is coming back tonight!
5. I nailed down an internship for next Fall/I won't be working in this place for very much longer (63 more days, to be exact)

@DoMark Yay for moving! And goat cheese.

My five arrree (that's a drumroll):

1. Vinho verde.
2. Hot baths with essential oils.
3. Bright yellow flowers on my cucumber plant.
4. The galactic rabbit horoscopes (could we get a special edition that describes the best/worst possible couple pairs).
5. Snacks!

Clara Morena

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)
1.Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries!
2. no finals!
3. I can now do leisure reading
4. My sister's dog
5. internet

That picture is totally cute. I'm in love with it. - David Slone

I'm not stressing out about my summer course making it or not because I have to finish writing a paper still.

Good planning! High five! I might have to teach on Monday, but I might not!

@Lucienne I have also procrastinated about writing a paper! Twinsies. I honestly should just pull the bandaid off and get 'er done tonight, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

Good luck on having your class make!

@Lucienne I actually didn't even procrastinate (very much . . .) - I just had an early deadline for the grading on the course I TAd for this semester and a bunch of other stuff. Also, I am kind of excited about my paper topic so it's sort of a pleasure-puzzle to be writing this stuff down.

So I've been at my new job for a week now and I'm just sort of getting progressively more paranoid. I do sooo much less work than at Target. I'm sort of constantly afraid that I'm going to get fired any minute on the grounds that oh it turns out they didn't really need another worker.

I mean as terrible of a job as entry level retail is I know that I'm damn good value for money and thus basically will never be fired for anything short of punching customers in the throat while stealing iphones and sexually harassing my bosses.

I mean I'm doing my job at the warehouse and I'm doing it well but I can't shake the feeling that they're going to notice that they have 2 people doing a 1.5 person job... hopefully it's just been a slow week.

Clara Morena

@Onymous I have been in that position and trust me that feeling will go away once you get into the swing of things. Just keep up and they will discover how good you are.

Clara Morena

Well, after a few weeks of unemployment, I had an job interview and I have a chance at a full time position! *FINGERS TIED* I recently discovered Phryne Fisher and call the midwife. So I'm pretty happy and I have been reading Murder on the oriental express. How is everybody else this fine weekend.

@ clara morena OMG Phryne! Everything she wears is perfect. Have you seen the 2004 Miss Marple with Geraldine McEwan? That might also be up your alley. :)
