Friday Open Thread

Long week, right? Lots of Gmail chains ("A bird is like, attacking this baby") and Craigslist behavior and of course all that mess with Heartbleed, which appears to have just become significantly worse? But we're hanging in there, even if "there" means Daytona, even if one way or another, we're thinking about death. We'll be fine; we've got a hot UPS man (maybe we will write him a note?) and Ursula Le Guin watching YouTube, and we've got our horoscopes to guide us. I for one am bare-legged for the first time in months and feeling optimistic. What's new with you? Let us know, and we'll see you back on Monday.

5 Things I Liked This Week are in my head, but no time to post now so I can get shit done and get out of work early to go to a (possibly fancy) party

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Cannot wait, I'm having a tough day, so the best I can come up with is whiskers on kittens. Those are nice. Everything else? Not nice.

@adorable-eggplant I just thought of one more thing: margaritas.

Uhhhhh damnit why do I always have such a hard time with this. Let's think.
1. I'm on a big Topo Chico (Mexican fizzy water) kick right now.
2. I have fun plans Friday, Saturday, AND Sunday this weekend.
3. One of those plans is a party where there will be a baby animal petting zoo. Like, baby chicks, ducks, bunnies, etc.
4. I started taking antidepressants and I have now made it two whole days without crying at work!
5. I found out that my boss will let me postpone a business trip by one day so I don't have to celebrate my birthday alone in another city!

@adorable-eggplant Sorry you're having a rough day, but yes to margaritas. I hope you are able to enjoy a margarita soon.

Oh man. I had a post all set up, and then it logged me out and deleted it. I've been looking forward to this post though because my week has been pretty good. :]

1. Spring Break started today, and I am off all of next week.
2. I got my car back (finally) after being in the shop for two unexpected weeks.
3. Tomorrow I am getting my hair cut, and I am seeing Kathy Griffin.
4. My students were pretty hilarious all week.
5. I won at video games at D&B last night, and this is new for me.

6. My boyfriend is pretty awesome, and we've been successful at talking about things instead of being arguing pouting children. COMMUNICATION ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED. :]

@coolallison Oh I am counting down the minutes. Your list is banging, in particular #3 and #4. :) I'm camping this weekend, which I should add to my list, because it will be nice to be out among the trees and rocks (really, it's just humanity that is on my shit-list right now).

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) #4 makes me happy for you! <3

I love your lists, especially the items relating to cute animals.
In that vein:
1- The wicked cool action-movie-star move that my cat pulled the other day while we were playing
2- The lady who does my eyebrows
3- Having dip for my vegetables!
4- Good, positive relationship stuff
5- the LA Lakers pen I got for free at work

1. amazing tomatoes from the farmer's market (tasted like sunshine)
2. adorable toddler cousins
3. many excellent workout instructors,
4. coworkers that go to class with me
5. good friends + honest conversations

concrete dreams

I haven't participated in this yet, so hi everyone!
1. It's silly, but I had some posters of my photos printed today and I'm really happy with how they turned out.
2. I'm in a really good relationship (and have been for 3+ years) and thinking about it makes me feel really happy and good inside.
3. It was finally warm enough outside tonight to justify going to get Italian Ice.
4. My 2nd semester of grad school is almost over! Which is good and bad, but still exciting.
5. A website/project I launched a month ago has been going better than I expected and it's been so much fun.

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)
1) Meeting and hanging out with new friends over beers
2) Chocolate
3) Being asked out on a date
4) Buying books for 1.50 euros each
5) Hanging out at the park and just talking about nothing/everything

make my day..and the rest of the others!!@n

whoooooooooo wants to talk about the family that was rescued at sea after their 1-year-old came down with salmonella aboard a sailboat?

@stonefruit I thought I read somewhere that the kid got salmonella before they even left, and they decided to go anyway.

@coolallison oh you did read that. Everyone had salmonella, including the wee one, and the doctor said "sure you can go once she's better." I still haven't puzzled out if she was officially better by the time they left, though.

Imagine being 1, profoundly seasick, unable to sleep, and just over a case of salmonella. I am not surprised they had to pull the plug on the trip!

sports sportsss SPORTSSS

I think all I have to say about sports right now is that I have a lot of feelings and all of them are about Teemu Selanne retiring.

Guuyyyssss I am fostering a pregnant stray cat and the vet says there are 4 kittens. She will give birth within the next couple of weeks.

Anyone have any names they've been dying to give a cat?

@OhMarie I'd go with 'Flub', which would be short of 'Mother Flubbin Kitten'. Otherwise names that reference fuzziness or smallness or a combination thereof.

ETA: And I can never have a kitten, so that name is forever free for the taking.

@OhMarie My mom named her stray cat Nomigato (not my cat).

@OhMarie Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

Hey guys, looking for some advice. My truly amazing boss is retiring this summer. In addition to just generally being supportive and helpful, he is also in the process of completing a personally generous project that he orchestrated for me that will have a long term affect on my quality of life (sorry for being vague, but it would take a while to explain). What can I do for him to show him how much I appreciate all he's done? What would be a meaningful retirement gift? I am completely at a loss. I owe him big-time and I'm not sure I'll ever see him again once he's gone.

@tealily Is there anything in their personal life that your boss has mentioned starting or enjoying in retirement? Or you give them a reminder of the impact of their work, like framing an article or photo.

@tealily If I remember correctly, a watch or timepiece is the traditional retirement gift, but in terms of more personal gifts... if there's something that they're proud of or they're really invested in, you could give them something significant in that vein. So like you could get an avid fly fisherman a set of antique lures or... something.

Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)

@tealily If he has any plans for retirement, maybe get him something that's in line with those plans? Like, if he plans to travel, you could get him a nice hand-crafted leather passport case or one of those maps of the world where you scratch off the countries you've been to. If he really likes food and wine, you could get a pair of wine glasses.
