Friday Open Thread

And we're off! Where to?

• America's heartland, where we may either find ourselves feeling superior or else come across a nice dependable stool

• The Times Weddings/Celebrations section (Yay Tara and Rhett!!!!), even though we're just going to leave our lovers anyway

Ireland with the Pirate Queen; Ye Olde Gruel Shoppe with our Jungian childhoods; Villa Tunari with a mysterious man on a motorcycle

• The kitchen for black bean brownies and Wuthering Tarts, the door to show our guests out, the couch to sit down and watch Doll & Em

• The Sailor Moon/Myers Briggs Personality Testing Center and our own private Single Moms Club

• Finally, of course, we're off to BuzzFeed.

IT'S SPRING NOW. How are you doing? Grass peeking out from underneath the snow? Anyone got any good book recommendations? I just finished B.J. Novak's short story collection and actually loved it; I also recently quite enjoyed Herman Koch's The Dinner and am thinking of going to the bookstore tomorrow and buying every Meg Wolitzer book I haven't read, but would also welcome any suggestions for something new.

BattyRabbit

The Ghost of OKCupid Dates Past is currently in the library where I volunteer auuuuugh I'm stuck! So awkward.
But it's okay because tomorrow starts spring break! I'll be working, but it's new fun work. Who else has wonderful plans they want to share, for spring break or in life?

ru_ri

@BattyRabbit OKCupid Ghosts are so awkward! Hide in the reference section until s/he is gone?

BattyRabbit

@BattyRabbit They're using a computer in the lab that I'm supervising so...gotta tough it out. But I'm free in five minutes!

adorable-eggplant

@BattyRabbit This is where a pair of glasses and a "twin sister" come in handy. As for spring break, mine already came and went! And I procrastinated about school work all the way through, so I didn't actually do any fun stuff.

ru_ri

I think Spring has gotten lost, or been waylaid, on Her way here because it is still all SNOW SNOW SNOW and also COLD COLD COLD. But at least there's a lot more sun. All the trees are trying to bud which is both hopesome and worryful at the same time.

I can't read for fun right now as I am beset with deadlines (since February, gah!!!) but I am looking forward to the new Terry Pratchett once the last deadline is slain deader than dead (Sunday? hoping Sunday).

Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)

@ru_ri I know! I heard this week the weather would get warmer, and we were supposed to get a couple days over 0 Celsius. That didn't happen. We got a couple days that were slightly less wintery? Does that count for anything?

adorable-eggplant

@ru_ri Ooh tell me more about this new Terry Pratchett, please. I stopped reading them religiously circa Making Money, and clearly I have fallen so far off the wagon that I don't even know when a new one is coming out. What have I missed?

ru_ri

@adorable-eggplant It is called "Raising Steam" and reviews are a bit mixed:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11275323-raising-steam
But I am a diehard and will read it no matter what!

adorable-eggplant

@ru_ri Hmmm, I think I will give it a whirl and stop reading reviews, because they are all over the map and I'd like to give it a fair chance. I do like Adora Belle Dearheart quite a bit, and it looks like she makes a showing in this one, so that's something to look forward to.

Clara Morena

Today, I will tell my Boss that I plan to leave my job as an after school teacher. I'm giving him 3 weeks notice not to mention spring break and I am scared.
I love the kids, I love that I am helping them with their reading and writing.
I hate the parents, I hate the administrator, I hate the politics of that job. I hate that I cannot take sick days, I hate the non-profit(the people who work there) behind it. I hate how some parents expect me to raise THEIR KIDS. I hate how I have one parent who is a complete idiot and has her 12 year old daughter has to be the responsible one. I hated how yesterday, one parent tried to get in involved in a personal matter. Fuck you, I didn't sign up to be a family therapist. I hate how there are mothers who use the school as a personal hang out. I hate how there are parents who spend money on expensive clothes, tech, etc and yet I have students who do not have pencils.
I hate how I was going to leave in February, but my boss forgot to find a replacement. So today, I will tell him I plan to leave.

Wish me luck.

coolallison

@ clara morena Yes, good luck! I'm having some job angst myself. I started a new job in January that showed so much promise, and yet, I am now traveling for work nonstop (despite them telling me there was very limited travel). And I am a really social person, but traveling by myself, and oh man is it lonely. I am having a hard time reconciling my desire to have a job that pays my bills with something that makes me happy. Why aren't there any high-paying jobs where you just play with puppies and drink wine all day? Can we find a way to make that a job?

Clara Morena

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Thanks! I told him 2 hours ago and he took it well!

Clara Morena

@coolallison I want a job of sitting on my sofa watching tv.

stonefruit

You know that thing where you have an appointment to get your allergies tested but before you can do that, you have to stop taking allergy meds for 5 days?

That thing is truly awful. EVERYTHING ITCHES, I can't stop sneezing, I'm going through kleenex like it's water, I am so uncomfortable. I just want to go home and lie down, but it will just make my nose more stuffy.

Also why does my work building turn the AC up right at lunch time when we're all trying to drink a glass of cold water.

Harumph.

siniichulok

@stonefruit Ugh, I sympathize. I saw a gastroenterologist the other day, and he believes in gluten sensitivity, which I'm about 98% sure that I have (many of them are all, "celiac or GTFO," apparently), which is a good thing. Except, in order to do the blood test and endoscopy, I have to eat some gluten every day for a month beforehand, which is...not so much a good thing. So I'm chowing down on samosas (yay!) and waiting for the bloating, "digestive distress," more severe migraines, and possible weight gain (not yay). Anyway, I hope you find some relief very soon!

Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)

It's been kind of a crummy week, so I'm going to try and focus on the positive!

5 Things I Like Right Now

1- Having plans with a friend who sometimes cancels on me, but hasn't yet
2- Oatmeal
3- The prospect of possibly not working late tonight
4- Starbucks Passion Tea
5- and, of course, Beyoncé

What about you all?

adorable-eggplant

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Every piglet on this list, but in particular #27: http://www.buzzfeed.com/chelseamarshall/31-cochons-mignons-chier-arcs-en-ciel

Onymous

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)

One of the only good things about working a shit job in the ungodly early mornings is that when I get home I can sit down and leisurely work my way through a pot of too strong coffee and I can still frame it as having coffee in the morning like a civilized human being.

Onymous

@adorable-eggplant I think #7 wins that with it's ridiculously pleased grin.

adorable-eggplant

@Onymous I would be happy to make a piglets bracket. #that one having a bath is going all the way to the finals.

I'm also going to add salsa so hot it makes my whole face numb to the list. AND my favorite local chip company just released a new style of chip. Which is heaven.

thenightwatch

Just wanted to say that although I never comment, I absolutely love the hairpin and so much of what I read on here. Is there ANY possibility the comments system will be improved? I know people have their issues with disqus but I would never drag myself away from the comments if it was just a little easier to access on my phone. Love what you're doing anyway Jia and Emma :)

OhMarie

I'm totally obsessed with the NCAA and my bracket right now (for basically no reason, I know nothing/care nothing about basketball). I WILL CRUSH YOU ALL IN THE HAIRPIN LEAGUE.

adorable-eggplant

@OhMarie Wasn't there just a Duke upset? And everybody hates them? That is what I know about sports spoooorts from my friends' facebook feeds.

Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)

@OhMarie for just a few brief minutes yesterday, I was tied with Emma for first place. I will take pride in those few minutes' worth of bragging rights probably forever. Thanks, Dayton!

By the way, stupid question for anyone who's better at bracketology than me: As soon as one team in your bracket loses, it's busted, right? What happens if you choose a team to win its first-round game but not its second-round game? It never would have made it to Elite Eight (or the finals) anyway. So if your later-on picks are intact, isn't your bracket still sort of good?

OhMarie

@adorable-eggplant Yes! Duke (3 seed) was beaten by Mercer (14 seed).

Rookie--well, as soon as one team in the bracket loses you won't have a perfect Warren Buffed billion dollar bracket, but all is definitely not lost! Nobody ever has a perfect bracket so if you get a few wrong early on and your later picks are right, that's an excellent bracket.

adorable-eggplant

@OhMarie Aha, a cinderella story in the making.

tealily

Got my garden in! Yayyyyyy!!! Hoping not to kill my herbs this year. I've been doing lots of reading this time around, and I think I've figured out what I've been doing wrong.

adorable-eggplant

@tealily Yay! What've you got? I have thyme and fennel (that overwintered like a boss) and am thinking about basil or tomatoes, as I sadly don't have space for both.

Onymous

@adorable-eggplant Fuck tomatoes.

Rotten tomatoes smell worse than death.

adorable-eggplant

@Onymous That made me laugh because, yes, that is true (but on the other hand fresh/unrotten ones make salsa! And crock pot spagetti sauce!).

tealily

@adorable-eggplant Combine it with fresh oregano and basil for spaghetti sauce! Combine it with fresh peppers for salsa! If you can only do one, I vote basil over tomatoes. So versatile!

Onymous

I just made oatmeal butterscotch cookies... and ate half of them.

mmmm cookies.

stroopwafel

Everyone may have already seen Oppressed Majority; it's made the rounds on Facebook and Buzzfeed and everywhere else. Just thought the Hairpin would be an appropriate place for a discussion. Thoughts?

Statham

I'm going to NYC tomorrow. This is partially exciting and partially stressful. Granted, it's to see a play, so that should be pretty nice.

Where should I eat? I'll be in the Times Square hub of touristy doom.

Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)

@Statham I don't know that much about NYC since I've only been once, but if you'll be in a group, I recommend this tasty Italian place my cousins took me to! It's family style - you get platters and share them. I think the shrimp was my favourite? In any case, it's called Tony's Di Napoli and it's delicious, near Times Square, but I'm not sure about pricing. (Also, I'm not sure if this is a selling point, but I think I remember an autographed picture of Bernadette Peters in their entrance.) tonysnyc dot com

And/or go to Eataly because it looks like what I imagine heaven looks like.

Danzig!

@Statham Manhattan in general is a rough place to find grub on a budget, for the most part. When I was short on cash I would head to the 1st ave stop on the L, walk a few blocks south to St. Marks Place, and get a dog and tots at Crif Dog. They do good.

Failing that, figure out which carts the cabbies frequent. Those are the ones to patronize.

chickpeas akimbo

@Statham maybe this will help: http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2013/07/where-to-eat-near-times-square-new-york-nyc.html

Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)

okay so this is late, but if anyone wants to discuss sports outside of March Madness...

SPORTS SPORTSS SPORTSSSSSS

Most importantly, congrats to our Emma on getting an SI cover story!! I'm so happy and proud and excited and scared. EMMAAAHHH we are so happy for you, and I can't wait to find that issue and read it.

Also: what the F did the New York Jets do today? In a related story, I am now a Green Bay Packers fan.

i am hear to give testimony of how i got back my husband, we got married for more than 9 years and have gotten two kids. thing were going well with us and we are always happy. until one day my husband started to behave in a way i could not understand, i was very confused by the way he treat me and the kids. later that month he did not come home again and he called me that he want a divorce, i asked him what have i done wrong to deserve this from him, all he was saying is that he want a divorce that he hate me and do not want to see me again in his life, i was mad and also frustrated do not know what to do,i was sick for more than 2 weeks because of the divorce. i love him so much he was everything to me without him my life is incomplete. i told my sister and she told me to contact a spell caster, i never believe in all this spell casting of a thing. i just want to try if something will come out of it. i contacted traditional spell hospital for the return of my husband to me, he told me that my husband have been taken by another woman, that she cast a spell on him that is why he hate me and also want us to divorce. then they told me that they have to cast a spell on him that will make him return to me and the kids, they casted the spell and after 1 week my husband called me and he told me that i should forgive him, he started to apologize on phone and said that he still live me that he did not know what happen to him that he left me. it was the spell that he traditional spell hospital casted on him that make him comeback to me today,me and my family are now happy again today. thank you traditional spell hospital for what you have done for me i would have been nothing today if not for your great spell. i want you my friends who are passing through all this kind of love problem of getting back their husband, wife , or ex boyfriend and girlfriend to contact traditionalspellhospital@gmail.com. and you will see that your problem will be solved without any delay.
