Friday Open Thread

Good evening, kids. We're heading off into the night in just a moment, but first, here are the things we talked about on The Hairpin this week. Let us know how you're doing, and have a lovely (long?) weekend.

• We met a magical feminist cyber game creator named Porpentine, a brave woman by the name of Greathead, and a woman who travels alone, but for work.

• We made engagement chicken, three ways.

• We consider chilling at some chill summer music festivals.

• We got advice from A Queer Chick and A Baba Yaga.

• We talked to Katie Heaney about her book (!) and Summer Anne Burton about her work.

• We feared weapons and shorties.

• We went for a run, maybe?

• And we were all declared Lady Ediths.

I will always remember this as the week I moved to Washington DC and made an account for The Hairpin.

Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)

@Kalorama_Kat Now you are bound to us and must return to the Hairpin on a regular basis.

oh no wait I think that's Hotel California

pajamaralls

@Kalorama_Kat man, that's a good week. How'd the move go?

La Divina Garza

@Kalorama_Kat
Ha ha! I also just created a Hairpin account. No exciting moves, though. What are you doing in D.C.?

jhonsons

this is so amazing ! perfect@j

About to see the boy again! Things went pretty well last week. Still trying to figure out exactly how I feel about him. I'm halfway between "time is ticking, hurry up" and "this is fun! just enjoy it!"

lasso tabasco

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Yay!

Gin-tastic

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Definitely enjoy it!

Ick I feel so terribly cliche asking this, but: Has anyone else dealt with terribly messy significant others? I've been living with mine for 2 years now, and it's not negatively affecting our relationship too much, but he is an absolute MESS. I'm the messiest member of a very neat family, which means I'm a bit scattered but fine by most people's standards: I might not clean up immediately following dinner, but I don't go to bed with dishes in the sink, that kinda thing. And he comes from a family where he never in his entire life was asked to/taught to make a bed.

I'm fine cleaning up after myself, but I'm terrible at cleaning up after other people. Plus, his perpetually messiness makes me a much messier person. And I'm okay with this level of messiness right now (okay being the operative word -- I'm hardly delighted) but at some point I feel I/we're gonna have to become slightly more legitimate adult people.

Ideas? Haaaalp.

@farowl I feel like there has to be an Ask A Clean Person or something about this. Have you tried checking the Hairpin archives? I feel like you're definitely not alone in this.

farowl

@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) I hadn't thought of that but I will do so!

adorable-eggplant

@farowl I'm the messier half, e.g. have never made a bed in my life (why when I will just get back in it? It feels like the whole weight of the futility of life presses down on me when I think about it), cannot bring myself to fold laundry [have compromised here by getting pretty boxes from ikea that live in the closet: boyfriend folds clothes neatly and puts them in box. I put mine in in heaps, but as long as they don't peep over the top, it doesn't look messy from the outside], and am pretty cool with living with dishes undone most of the time.

Our biggest fix has been monthly house meetings (on the google calendar) during which we can assess the level of cleanliness and schedule 'days of cleaning' wherein we both have to do cleaning stuff for some significant chunk of time until the place is back in the respectable zone. It's more bearable for me to clean when someone else is cleaning also. He does the thing where he vacuums the top of the ceiling fan: I laugh that it would even occur to a person to clean there. It's pretty harmonious, and I've gotten better about cleaning as I go, just over time, because I know that he'll be picking up the slack if I don't. So guilt has helped a wee bit.

avidbiologist

@farowl Have you seen http://unfuckyourhabitat.tumblr.com/ ? I haven't used it but it looks like it's a nice place to find strategies for slowly cleaning up things that have gone a little crazy.

That said, I am the (marginally) less messy half of a relationship and my solution, so far, has been to not move in together, so that's not very helpful to you. But I've thought about what I would do. Is there a room that can be His that he can keep as messy as he wants, and then can you both set tasks for him to do to clean up after himself? Or can you set a time for both of you to clean up the house together before doing some kind of fun shared activity?

I think it's also important to make things AS EASY AS POSSIBLE to be unmessy, so boxes instead of drawers, etc. may be needed because I think it's hard for most people to change habits they've had since childhood, especially if staying the same is way easier than changing.

OhMarie

I got a kitten yesterday! I am obsessed with him.

farowl

@OhMarie Yay! What's his name?

OhMarie

@OhMarie No name yet! We are going to fight it out over the weekend.

adorable-eggplant

@OhMarie Contenders? I love the naming process.

OhMarie

@adorable-eggplant Sure! Background is that he is super super chill--loves getting pets and purring, but other than that mostly sits and naps, he doesn't care for any of the toys we have for him. A friend of mine found him in a park in Baltimore last weekend so he was getting fixed/checkups/shots this week before he came home. Brown tabby. Contenders:

Buzz--this is my favorite, you can go Aldrin or Lightyear and it plays into the purring
Rumble--this is my husband's version of a purring name
Parker (or Peter Parker)--our friend who found him is lobbying for Parker because he was found in the Park, I don't like that but I like Peter Parker a lot even though I don't care about Spiderman

I also like nicknamable pet names and all of these do well on that front, I think--Buzzy, Pete, Rummy.

adorable-eggplant

@OhMarie I like Rumble > Rummy > Gin Rummy as a nickname path. I'm also not a huge Spiderman fan, so maybe Charlie Parker instead, which gives the nicknames "Yardbird" and "Bird".

ru_ri

@adorable-eggplant Yes, Rumble>Rummy is excellent. Also, @OhMarie--Congratulations on the kitty! Super chill cats are the best. Can we haz pictures?!?

OhMarie

@adorable-eggplant Switcheroo!!! Over the weekend my husband thought of Nico/Neko (I think Nico?) and I didn't even like it at first but it wormed its way into my brain in a matter of hours and now that's his name. I don't know how to insert pictures here but here's one on Instagram: http://instagram.com/p/jQSe8sPQfu/

ru_ri

@OhMarie Well, isn't he cute as a li'l biscuit! And he looks like a "Nico," well named.

up cubed

DRYUARY?! How is it going for you folks? I've been journaling, which helps me remember my successes so far. However, I'm still having a hard time waking up in the morning and haven't lost any weight.

LaLoba

@up cubed DOING IT. DRYING IT. Over half way! I'm going nuts because denying myself something makes me think about it alll the tiiiime. My roommates are team players with me though, so we are suffering together and being pretty productive. Also it made me swiftly realize a dude I went on a couple dates with was super boring, which had I not been distinctly sober may have gone unconfirmed for another week.

OhMarie

@LaLoba Increased boring detector seems like a great side effect! Perhaps more painful during the date but good in the long run.

lasso tabasco

Oh dear, I just threw up a little in my mouth AND THEN ACCIDENTALLY INHALED IT. I was choking and burning and turning red and running at top speed to the rest room. It was very unexpected and embarrassing! Sorry, I had to share, I've never had that happen before! I don't recommend it.
In other news, what's everyone's favorite soups to make?

adorable-eggplant

@lasso tabasco I used to make Poblano Corn Chowder all the time, but I haven't in ages. So that's totally what I'm having this weekend!

Onymous

@lasso tabasco Well I'm making black bean soup as I speak but my fav is Posole. I'm still on the hunt for a great recipe though.

siniichulok

@lasso tabasco My favorite is lagman: http://arbuz.com/recipes/lagman-recipe (Full disclosure--this is my friend's blog.) Unfortunately, it seems that I have a gluten sensitivity, which means that I'm going to have to use rice noodles instead of homemade wheat noodles, which are the best part. But it'll take a lot less time, on the bright side! And it's always tasty--like Central Asian pho.

LaLoba

@lasso tabasco I love this "VOMIT NEWS" to "hey soup!" sequitur.

ru_ri

@siniichulok Oh man I am totally going to make this. Your friend's blog is great--makes me want to visit Central Asia. I have never been there and I want to gooooooo!

Sun Tongs

Hello! This is my first post. After all the grossness that Jezebel has been doing lately and seeing a few posters recommend The Hairpin, I thought I'd move here instead!

As a welcoming gift, I give you corgi puppies:

siniichulok

@Sun Tongs Welcome! I'm also a Jezebellian transplant. Adorable puppies!

LaLoba

@Sun Tongs Hurray! so glad you are here.

La Divina Garza

@Sun Tongs
Ah yes. Sadly, Jezebel has definitely gone downhill in the last few years. I still check it daily, though, but find myself reading fewer and fewer articles.

Clara Morena

@Sun Tongs Yay welcome!

Onymous

Apropo of nothing but Fiona Apple's Idler Wheel... is a hell of an album.

siniichulok

Iceberg, are you still around? I have become so completely spoiled and am now experiencing Bergy Bits report withdrawal.

Mel_not_Missy

@siniichulok She's posting about them at The Toast's open threads now.

Onymous

So:

this is a thing

Clara Morena

@Onymous too cute!

Gulfie

Here's a thing I've been wondering: if FOT was the last post before the weekend again, would it be more visible/accessible/active? I feel like personally I'd remember it more if it came up every time I visited The 'Pin on weekends.

ru_ri

@Gulf of Finland I agree. Isn't there some kind of...technological thing...you can do to make one post always be on top? I have seen it on other blogs, I think.

Clara Morena

Hey y'all, I graduated from Uni and working part time( at a job field that is problematic at best.) Other than that how is every buggy?

adorable-eggplant

@ clara morena Congrats on graduating! I also had a part-time job that wasn't quite my cup of tea for complicated reasons right after graduating, but got better (not the job, but my employment situation, eventually).

apolsasam

This is totally cool. I actually enjoyed reading a couple of stuff here. - Feed the Children Reviews

ru_ri

I know it's a holiday but I'm gonna try to drown out the spammers here! I spent the weekend slaying deadlines and shoveling snow. Now I just have one more deadline to kill and it's very hard to get motivated to do it. I keep telling myself how great it will feel to have it done and out of the way, but it's not working. I keep finding other things to do. AH the freelance life...

ION I moved to this place two years ago (in the frozen wastelands of the north, to be with my parents) and am finally starting to make some actual friends. It's been rocky but I think it's getting better. And the 'Pin has been a big help getting me through the isolation--so thanks to you all.

adorable-eggplant

@ru_ri Oh the frozen north. I can only imagine (and when I imagine, it looks a lot like this: http://cabinporn.com/post/70611810126/photographs-taken-by-alex-and-mina-on-a-drive-from [complete with husky]). Yay for the slowly expanding circle of friends, though. :)

ru_ri

@adorable-eggplant Haha, yup, looks much like that only with about 2 feet more snow everywhere! In fact, one of my friends has a tiny cabin that is not quite as tiny as the one in that photo but almost as cute.

adorable-eggplant

@ru_ri Your friend should submit a picture, so I can drool over their cabin! I'm sure I would not be able to hack it (native texan, can count on one hand the number of times I've seen snow) but I do like to daydream. :)
