Two years ago, this guy went the store. Today, he's late to a meeting. This is how I will leave the house tonight.
Thanks for joining us this week. Tell us how you're doing, and what you're being, and we'll see you back here on Monday.
open thread, late to a meeting, this guy gets it
This week with the BBs
Singing the alphabet with The Quiet One: "...T for [her name], U, V--"
"I not a V!" she said indignantly (because she heard "[her name], you V").
"Mama you got chocolate?"
"Open your mouf!
... You got cheese? I want cheese."
Family-specific language: we taught the kids how to do peace signs, which they interpreted as a synonym for "two", and they call a Fruit Loop a "color" because they're colorful Cheerios, so "Peace sign kullah!" (yes they have mostly Aussie accents) means "I want two Fruit Loops!"
The Diva was given balloons by a Publix employee, but when her daddy asked where she got it from: "Miss Lady have it."
Diva monologue: "[The Clown] hurt me! He hit me! He try to take my bus! It's mines! ...I'm gonna give it back to him."
@iceberg Ahhh babies with accents!
@iceberg Aww, I love the accents too! I'm sure they'll fall away as the BBs get more exposure to tiny American-accented children, but that's just adorable.
@iceberg I love the BBs. Never grow up, BBs.
@iceberg I saw this and thought of you. http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2013/oct/25/my-child-is-crying-greg-pembroke (Some of the comments are awful, I'm afraid.)
That video is AMAZING.
So crush has gotten better/worse. We hooked up again last weekend, and that went pretty well, except for the fact that he was sick. (Here’s how that started: We were leaving the bar, and I said, “Oh, I’ll share the cab with you partway and it can just drop me off at my apartment.” When we got there, he says, “Actually, I’d like to come up because I want a glass of water.” So he came up and I said, “You can spend the night if you want.” And he said, “Really?” And, you know, did.)
Then we had a text conversation in which I was convinced he would say things had to stop and then he didn’t. Which is a good sign? I think. Yes.
In other news, I have a job interview on Tuesday that I am very excited/nervous for.
In other OTHER news, today’s Bon Iverotica was TOO MUCH. I am dead. My ghost is talking to you from its twee dream life.
@meetapossum Ahhh crush news! That sounds good? Cackling a little at wanting to come up for a glass of water because...that is a very, very weak excuse indeed. Your cab driver was probably mega-rolling his eyes.
And break a leg at your job interview! You'll do great!
@yeah-elle But proper hydration is really important, nay critical, after a night of drinks. Congrats on luuuuring him into your lair. ;)
And also, good luck on the interview!
@yeah-elle Right? I told him it was not very smooth, but hilarious.
@meetapossum This is so exciting! Your life is exciting.
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Only very recently! Let's not talk about how much time last week I spent playing Fable 3 while my roommate was away.
@meetapossum That Bon Iverotica! Soooo good. I secretly wish that were my life, but recreating that Earl Grey and bourbon concoction they drink is probably the closest I'll get.
Friday. Friday. Glorious. Thank goooooodnesssssssssssssss. How are y'all?
@adorable-eggplant so so so glad it's Friday! Very much done with this week.
@planforamiracle Yup, get the behind me, week.
GUYS, I TRIED DICK HOLE MIND CONTROL THIS WEEK
@j-i-a DID IT WORK
@KatieBarTheDoor i COULDN'T THINK OF ANY MEMORIES TO IMPLANT or w/e, i pretty much am terrible at it. this is a full summary for anyone who is not grossed out: so 5 min in, he's like "wait, are we doing the dickhole thing"
i was like "yeah, p fun isn't it"
he's like "what are you implanting in my brain"
i suggest that he will no longer be angry when i forget to close containers properly
he's like "NO CHANCE"
and then i remember i'm on birth control so i'm probably not releasing copulins anyway
< / dickholemindcontrol >
@j-i-a WHAT IS THIS I must know! I am not on birth control. (PSA for ladies who smoke and/or are over 35: the sponge, guys. The sponge.)
@j-i-a HA! My boyfriend of 5 years told me yesterday that the only thing I do that he hates is not close containers properly. "Sometimes they have liquid in them, and I pick them up by the lid, and it spills everywhere and it fills me with rage. But it's the only thing that ever fills me with rage. But please, please put the lids back on."
@aphrabean Sometimes I'm just in a really big hurry okay.
@PomoFrannyGlass It's not a barrier, though, right? Just checking my options if I ever have sex again.
@aphrabean dude yeah it is the actual #1 problem in my relationship. i am also always like "LISTEN BUDDY, I'M PRETTY COOL OTHERWISE SO U NEED TO DEAL WITH IT" which is probably not too helpful
@j-i-a HAHAHA that is also my attitude. Just don't pick things up by the lid, bro. Problem solved.
@Lily Rowan Not sure what you mean exactly? Not a barrier in the way condoms (male or female) are. Little round sponge that goes inside on your cervix. It will probs move around in there (if he's doing it right, har har) but it's ok b/c it also has spermicide. Pros: not hormonal, doesn't affect sensation, excellent for timing (once it's in you can have sex whenever for the next 24 hours, so there's no fumbling in the moment if you thought ahead). Cons: expensive, not always in stock at drug stores (but can be ordered for cheaper online), like a couple of percentage points less effective than condoms or hormones according to the research.
Sorry to hijack this thread for my extensive birth control comparison knowledge. But I still want to know what dick hole mind control is! I feel like it could have come in real handy if I'd learned about it a week ago. :-/
@PomoFrannyGlass Dick Hole Mind Control!
@j-i-a THANKS that is amazing (how is there a Hairpin post I MISSED what) and I am relieved to realize that due to the whole stay-still-for-15-minutes thing I didn't miss an important opportunity to use this to change my life this week. Good luck to you and your containers though!
@j-i-a Hahaha mine would be very similar (no longer mad when I just put veggies in the fridge instead of wrapping them fully in plastic like a goddamned mummy).
@PomoFrannyGlass That is what I meant! If it doesn't protect against STDs, it would be a no-go for a new partner. Ah well!
@Lily Rowan oh, got it, sorry! I found the sponge when I was in a serious relationship & wanted to quit the hormones and it seemed like the greatest thing ever. Now I tend (try) to stick with condoms the first few outings until trust/monogamy has been established.
giving this tip makes me feel so bourgeois, but anyway:
your vegetables will last so much longer if you get one of those plastic vegetable containers for your fridge that are specially designed for raw veg. it will also save the environment as you stop using all the plastic wrap. and you don't even have to put the lid on tightly for major benefits -- loose lid is still better than plastic wrap. and no tearing off plastic wrap. it's win-win!
Can we talk makeup for a minute? I need makeup help. I've been doing the same thing pretty much since I started wearing makeup as a teenager, and I don't know if my technique is no longer good, or I'm using the wrong products, but now that I'm getting ~older~ it's just not working. I've used expensive stuff and cheaper stuff-- currently the super cheapo NYC from the drugstore-- and at this point I think I need someone to sit me down and show me exactly what to use and how to use it.
So! I was all set to come here and ask for advice on which makeup counter to visit for a makeover, but first I did some research on animal testing-- the avoidance of which is important to me-- and it turns out that even formerly cruelty-free brands, like MAC and Bobbi Brown, are now allowing animal testing in order to be sold in China, where it is required. And now my choices are more limited.
Anyway, this all means I can sum up this drawn-out question into asking whether anyone has experience with makeup from the following:
The Body Shop
I know there are other cruelty-free cosmetics, but I liked the idea of these because they're sold in places where I can have someone help me with them. Certainly open to suggestions, though!
@KatieBarTheDoor Bare Escentuals is great but has a bit of a learning curve -- I would get one of their starter kit thingies and watch the DVD that comes with it. Haven't used Lush in a while but it's mostly just bath products I thought? They will demonstrate the hell out of their stuff in-store if you ask. And Stila is just awesome across the board. Excellent tinted moisturizer, eyeshadow, and eyeliner in particular.
@KatieBarTheDoor Aveda salons sometimes have a makeup and skincare person to help with training and application.
@KatieBarTheDoor Sephora sells lots of brands that don't test on animals. I'm not sure their helpers are always the MOST knowledgeable but they've definitely been able to help me pick the right shade of concealer etc. And you can return stuff if you get it home and hate it.
My preferred brands, which all appear at a cursory glance to be animal-testing-free:
Benefit (concealer, mascara, blush, highlighter)
Urban Decay (their Naked line is great for face-makeup, I use the BB cream)
@KatieBarTheDoor I have had good experience with The Body Shop and Stila. I can't set foot in Lush because of the smell. I tried Bare Escentuals but I didn't feel like it matched my skin tone well.
@Oliver St. John Mollusc Cool, maybe I'll give Stila a try for starters. And I also never knew Lush had makeup, but it seems they have a few non-standard type things, like "Light Base Color" and "Emotional Brilliance Transluscent" (??).
@all Thanks-- seems like any of these might be fine to try out.
@KatieBarTheDoor I love Bare Escentuals, but it took practice. They'll teach you, though. Ditto Lush - I actually don't like most of their makeup colors, so I only use bath, cleansers and lotions, but they will definitely take the time to teach you everything.
Stila came highly recommended to me by the makeup artist who got me all pretty for my last pin-up shoot. She raved about quality and pricing, and says she uses it for every day, photography and movie filming.
As mentioned above, I adore adore adore Benefit's mascara. It does amazing things for me.
@KatieBarTheDoor I feel like Bare Escentuals is somewhat dependent on your skin type. It dries mine out, so if you have similar issues/live in a place where winter is coming, I would just beware that.
@KatieBarTheDoor I know this was Friday OT not Monday OT but just in case you're still checking back for comments - I second the Urban Decay recc - their line of Naked products is my fave. I use their BB as a primer and then follow with the ultra definition liquid makeup. You can definitely find some cruelty free synthetic brushes, and have someone at Sephora do a color match for you and show you technique for applying. I personally like to use a traditional foundation brush but you might prefer a stippling brush for easier application - the point is, use a brush! I used my fingers for awhile and you just cant get the product worked into your skin and blended correctly. I also recommend a cream blush (I use bobbi brown but it sounds like that's not cruelty free anymore) because that looks beautiful on aging skin which tends to be drier - makes me look younger!! I use a Stila highligher on my cheekbones, ditto to making me look younger. Basically for my face skin, I don't touch it with powder, at all, unless I put on a little bronzer, because cream and liquid products make it look healthier and younger and powders can be drying.
Typically I use UD's eyeshadow primer, and then Naked palette on my eyes and follow with Bare Escentuals Lash Domination mascara. I found all these things by demanding makeovers from Sephora ladies. I have a favorite lady now who helps me whenever I go in, and as long as you're going to spend money, and its not super busy they should have time to give you a full face of makeup and talk you through technique.
Final thoughts: you mention that you are currently using cheapy makeup, and if that's your budget, that's probably okay, just get tools to use it correctly. If you can afford to splurge on anything, splurge on your primer/foundation and stick with cheaper eyeshadows/mascaras/lipsticks. Take care of your skin!
Cheap tools PSA: I love the Elf line at Target - they make synthetic brushes that have held up pretty well and they are literally one dollar.
Apparently I have been living under a rock because I found out last night that Morrissey is apparently a racist and an anti-immigrant bigot? I really don't follow him at all, outside of enjoying a few of his songs, and I had no idea what his politics were.
@stonefruit Morrissey is pretty insufferable. But he knows he's unloveabbbllee, you don't have to tell himmmm.
@stonefruit He's pretty terrible. I would sell my first born to go to a Smiths reunion concert, but I know it will never happen b/c he is THE WORST. And even if it was going to happen, he would probably get pissy and walk off stage in the first 10 minutes.
@yeah-elle heaven knows, he's miserable nowwwww
@chevyvan Haha, yeah he totally would.
Sasha Frere-Jones had this great line in his review of Morrissey's Autobiography: "...Morrissey and his band members do not get along. They really don’t get along, and Morrissey is so eager to detail this not getting along that you come away from “Autobiography” thinking that Morrissey maybe started the Smiths so that he could be joined in the unholy union of protracted legal dispute for a long time, and with several people."
Yay for Friday! Yay for FOT! Mostly, hurrahs for this week being over. Gave my presentation, so the pit of anxiety in my stomach can go away now and leave me in peace and actually let me consume food now.
Pokemon X continues to be super cute. And then Ace Attorney Dual Destinies was released this week and is waiting for me to "unwrap" on my 3DS' SD card.
Basically, I'm looking forwards to this weekend/life! This is going to be the first weekend in a month or so I'm not working and I'm super excited about that.
Let's all share some joy and/or weekend plans?
@celeec4@twitter CAMPING!! And it's going to be cool and lovely.
@adorable-eggplant The place I live is prepping for a major cold front, with a high of 30 degrees (the HIGH), and plenty of snow and wind, so my plans are cuddle up, hunker down, put chicken in the crockpot and read.
@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose Crockpot! I am so jealous. I want a crockpot so badly. Do you find that you have too many leftovers?
@adorable-eggplant I hope you enjoy the camping! It's kind of not my thing, but I know a lot of people enjoy it?
@I'm Right on Top of That, Rose Jealous of your snow, hunkering down for a weekend of nothing sounds glorious.
@adorable-eggplant Usually. I can ship them to you. We did corned beef and cabbage and carrots and potatoes last weekend, and they lasted for most of the week!
@celeec4@twitter Now all I have to do is convince my girlfriend to hunker and chill as well; if we're sitting in the house for very long, she starts finding "projects."
@celeec4@twitter I am big time looking forward to Ace Attorney. I don't have time to play it right now, but it's on my SD card and when I do, it is going to be amazing.
@celeec4@twitter I do love camping. Although I can see why others might not. Being dirty and tromping around are acquired tastes.
ETA: @IROTOTR I am the worst at finishing leftovers, so I've decided that I need to prove to myself that I can handle a week worth of something before I commit to a crockpot. It hasn't happened yet. :(
@adorable-eggplant There are mini slow cookers! I can't do the endless leftovers either so I've almost convinced myself a mini is the perfect compromise.
@SmartCookie Please don't think I'm nuts, but we actually own two different sizes of crockpots. The big one for things like the corned beef and cabbage, and a baby one for things like queso and meatballs. The small crockpots are only like $10!
@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose That's not nuts: it's brilliant. Maybe I will get a tiny, starter crockpot. Because I do love me some queso.
@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose Ehehehe, I'm also guilty of constantly needing something to do.
@camanda Can't wait to start up Ace Attorney later today, need to run some errands first but this is already a wonderful weekend so far.
@adorable-eggplant It isn't so much the dirty, or tromping around. It is kind of the combined altogether that makes it really unappealing to me. City girl all the way through and through.
@celeec4@twitter @I'm Right on Top of that, Rose @SmartCookie You guys! I didn't get to go camping due to a lack of site availability (because it was an absolutely perfect weekend) so I treated myself to a consolation crockpot!
And I made porridge that was awesome. I was going to turn the leftovers into corn muffins, but my boyfriend was like, "No, I will continue to eat that." So leftovers sorted.
Next FOT I will be collecting recipes. :)
@adorable-eggplant What goes in porridge?? I have a crockpot but I have never made porridge!
Crockpot recipe - easiest one ever:
Chicken thighs (a bunch)
Thing of salsa (your favorite)
Cook on low for 4 hours, shred, eat on top of rice, in a burrito, on top of nachos, stir into chicken broth for soup ETCETERA
@adorable-eggplant I really like the recipe-collection idea for next FOT. Am always on lookout for more recipes easily adapted to feed one person.
My weekend was pretty wonderful, did nothing much, which was a great change from working, and I didn't even run any non-fun errands. XD
Any one have any recipes that will take up most of a day with delicious results? I am homebound for the weekend (two puppies, cold weather, broke broke broke!) and love to cook up big Sunday dinners for whoever feels like stopping by, but I'm feeling very uninspired by my standard go-to recipes. I eat meat, but often do meatless and have access to tons of seasonal produce at our local farmer's market.
@cabber How about Saturday prep, Sunday throw in the slow cooker? I don't have any great stew or beef bourguignon recipes, but that sounds like it might be up your alley. And fancy soups! Someone please give her a delicious autumn soup recipe because mine aren't any good.
@cabber Sounds like baking might do the trick? I always drool at these recipes: http://www.dessertsforbreakfast.com/
@cabber Maybe some chili or soup (make the stock from scratch?) and some home-baked bread?
@cabber Maybe try making bread? That takes hours, right? I've never done it, because it takes hours.
@cabber Have you ever tried making homemade pasta? I cannot anymore b/c of gluten but it's actually pretty easy if time consuming, and the payoff is incredible. Also there are a million youtube videos of Italian grandmothers hand-forming pasta and they are a joy to watch.
@cabber Soups! Soups are nice and can take up a whole day. With the bonus of, generally they freeze well for delicious eatings later. I almost always have a container or two of soups frozen in my freezer for super-lazy days.
@all Good suggestions everyone, thanks! I do frequently make bread and pasta, but maybe I can try something more inventive. I keep a whole box of "weekend dishes" that I come across and never have time to make, but for whatever reason, nothing is jumping out at me. I had some short rib ravioli at a restaurant recently which could be fun....
@cabber I highly recommend Smitten Kitchen's short ribs bourguignon if you are in a short rib kind of mood. In a similar vein, the braised oxtail recipe from Ad Hoc at Home is great.
@cabber Chile Rellenos? Fine cooking had a recipe this month that looks like it will take forever (which it had better since my husband is making it for my birthday and the mutual rule for birthday dinners is that slaving over the stove is required)
Lasagna if you also make the sauce from scratch is definitely a day-long event.
@cabber babka. make a babka. it will take you all day, and then you will have a babka, which is about the best thing ever
you could cook something involving fish or meat, and then make stock from its carcass, and freeze it, and have an absolutely amazing cooking medium for weeks!
if it's not too late, totally make stock! fish stock is not made often enough and is great, and so is duck stock (so much fat on a duck, it's almost too much).
@cabber I've been eying this -- haven't made it yet but almost every comment is a rave: http://www.seriouseats.com/2012/01/best-vegetarian-bean-chili.html
Ugh so I told myself that the next time I saw my crush, I would ask him out on a date, and that's tonight, and I am totally gonna chicken out, I can already tell. Why do I insist on being the worst?
@yeah-elle don't chicken out!
@yeah-elle You can chicken out if you need to! I mean, you shouldn't chicken out, you should totally ask him on a date. But chickening out doesn't make you the worst, and sometimes I just need to give myself the option to wuss out in order to suck it up and do the hard thing.
@yeah-elle You aren't the worst. It's scary! I once asked a guy out in front of several people (I was very very drunk at a wedding) and he TOTALLY said no. In front of several people. I won't go into details, but though he was kind, it was horribly embarrassing and is still brought up among my friends pretty frequently, but I find it hilarious. Which is a long way of saying that if you decide to ask him and he says no, you'll be alright!
I also asked my husband out and that clearly worked out, so I am glad I had the guts to try again....
@yeah-elle Don't chicken out! Here's my foolproof method: You'll want to get a running start, approach rapidly, then swerve and run the opposite direction. Try to get up some good speed, really accentuate the doppler effect. If you do it right, it's:
60% of the time it works every time.
@alannaofdoom Problematically, it's possible to get stuck on the 'hhheey' part, so try to power through that quickly.
@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose LOVE. If only I was as cute as that damn strawberry!
yeah, guys, if it ever happens, my strategy is to look stressed, then yell "I'M GOIN FOR IT!.............doyouwanttogooutwithme?" ughhhh
Oh, I also finally got a doctor and had some regular lab tests done up for STIs and instead of leaving the (totally okay) results in my voicemail, I had to call them back and stay on hold for 5 minutes at work, thinking, "oh my god if that asshole gave me chlamydia somehow I am going to kill a fucker."
@yeah-elle Why? Why do they do that? I will sign any waiver they want if it means they would leave a useful voicemail.
The last time, the voicemail was an out of the blue and ominous "TheLetterL, this is doctor's assistant. Please call us when you get this." Positive that I was going to die, I spent ten minutes on hold and being bounced around between staffers until someone finally said, "Ah, yes, she called you to find out if you wanted to schedule a Pap."
@TheLetterL UGH WHY DO THEY DO THAT? They even ask me if it's OK to leave a voicemail and I'm like "it's a goddamned cell phone with a Texas area code, who the fuck else do you think is going to listen to it?? Yes, leave me a voicemail!"
@Oliver St. John Mollusc Yes! That conversation has happened multiple times and it makes no difference.
OK, someone needs to explain that video to me. WTF?
@Lily Rowan I......dk..........
@Emma Carmichael I mean, is it animation? Is it a puppet somehow??
@Lily Rowan It looks like animation to me--at least, the car does. Not 100% sure about the...guy thing. There's something weirdly ominous about it to me despite the chirpy music. Maybe it's the uncanny-valley quality combined with the aggressive nudity.
@Lily Rowan the person is some kinda 3D character animation. it kinda looks to me like a prebuilt video-game ready model, and the filmmaker is fucking with his anatomy and movement controls. the car is from a video game, i'm pretty sure from grand theft auto. the whole shot where it's on the highway is taken entirely from the video game, but the other shots with the car, its composited into live action footage.
also: it is the most wonderful thing and i've watched it six times now and it just keeps getting better
aw, i kind of like the nudity. it makes him vulnerable and friendly and human and not tied to any class or identity -- just a human bean, you know.
I went to Killjoy's Kastle, a lesbian feminist haunted house here in Toronto and it was pretty darn cool. Highlight of my week. Wish I'd been able to take photos to share with y'all but it was so darrrrkkkk and spooooooky ;)
@planforamiracle WHAT THAT SOUNDS AMAZING.
HALP I have postpartum depression and my husband refuses to support me emotionally because he is perpetually depressed, and our batshit neighbor has been threatening us and now management is doing an inspection because said batshit neighbor claims we have no area rugs in our bedroom and are zooming around and throwing things and moving furniture like poltergeists all night when we are in fact fast asleep. She hasn't complained about the baby, which I think is proof that she's not really hearing US because I'm sure she would be all over that crying baby idea if she could. Meanwhile I sort of want to hurl myself off the balcony, not that I will really do that (I won't!)....Anyway, how are y'all's Fridays going?
@siniichulok Hi! I am so sorry you are dealing with all of this neighbor bullshit on top of your PPD. I hope you have some friends or family who you can turn to. My best friend struggled with PPD and a husband who wasn't particularly understanding and she has since said that though it was really hard because part of the PPD was isolating herself and feeling ashamed, she feels like reaching out and telling her closest friends what was going on was absolutely invaluable. If you don't have anyone close by, hang out on the Open Thread! Everyone here is so nice, it's like this site operates on a different Internet planet.
@siniichulok There are two hotlines (at the bottom of this list: http://www.womenshealth.gov/mental-health/hotlines/) and I'm not sure which to recommend, but there are two, so maybe call one and then try the other if you don't click with the operator.
@siniichulok I sat here sobbing and rocking back and forth just now like a madwoman (which I never do) and he watched me impassively and offered me lunch and tea and then went off by himself when I declined. I think we are actually in a Bergman movie or something.
@siniichulok Oof, that sounds very rough. And very much like you need some real support, right away. HUGS.
ETA: Here's the hotline number, I found a version that doesn't have the annoying letters, which I can never figure out how they correspond [unless I am looking at a touchpad]: 1-800-773-6667
@cabber Oh yes, I'd love to do that, and I just sent a note to my childhood BFF asking her if she can join me on Skype (for a typed, not spoken, session). The problem is that most of our (his and my) other friends are friends with both of us, and I don't want to put them in an awkward position. But I will definitely hang out here--I love this place! @adorable-eggplant--thanks for those links; I'm actually in Canada but should definitely call SOMEBODY. I'm in treatment for PPD at the hospital where I gave birth, so I'll see if I can call them. I don't want to do it in front of my husband, who will just hear me talking about him and be all accusatory about how can I put pressure on him because he's DEPRESSED (I already told him that I never want to hear again about how he hates this country because hearing it over and over and over again every day is sending me over the edge), but maybe I'll go for a walk later with the baby and call them then.
@siniichulok hon is there a therapist/mental health clinic you could see on an emergency/crisis basis? Canadian 'Pinners, do you know how this works?
@siniichulok Do you think your husband would be willing to learn more about PPD? That might be helpful as well, though if he is depressed and shutting you down, it may be difficult to get him invested.
I am glad you are getting treatment and hope you get a chance to call them soon. As for mutual friends, I'm in the same boat, but typically friends are friends. They very likely know you are struggling right now and may just be taking your lead on not bringing it up, but are ready to step up and be supportive if you reach out.
@siniichulok Canada! It's my dream to move there, perhaps Montreal. I've heard wonderful things (on the budgeting blog I read) about the healthcare system, so perhaps you can contact your OBGYN or whatever office helped handle your pregnancy.
Also, I found this list of groups that include a lot of Canadian resources: http://www.postpartumprogress.com/ppd-support-groups-in-the-u-s-canada [scroll to the bottom past the states stuff] Here are two numbers from that list, which might work: call 604-255-7999 for the lower mainland Vancouver area or 1-855-255-7999 for other British Columbia.
@siniichulok It sounds like other people have chimed in with actual helpful advice, but I just wanted to say that what you're going through must be so hard, and it sounds like you're doing a really good job of dealing with it under very difficult circumstances.
@LilRedCorvette @everybody--thank you so much! I'm so glad to have the Hairpin to hang out on in times like these. <3 We had a sort-of talk; I'm still too much of a coward to say that he hasn't been supportive during this whole thing, because it will be a total sh!tstorm, but I did say that I was unable to support him in my current state the way I have been and that I was concerned that we could not support each other while we are both depressed (really, I am such a coward). He agreed with me. But he said he'll call his workplace's free counseling center, and I emailed the psychiatrist who runs my PPD support group to ask her about whether there are free PPD resources for fathers as well, because he said he'd do it if it was free. I suspect not, but it's worth a try. I should have gone out and called a helpline, but I waited too long, and just as I was about to, this freezing rain came up. I'll try tomorrow. I'm self-medicating with soda water and Call the Midwife (though I'm fast-forwarding through the sad parts).
Anyway, thanks again!
@siniichulok I'm really glad you have a support group coordinator to reach out to! And the pin! And really self-care is about taking a million tiny steps and you're doing awesome if you get in one tiny step per day. I <3 Call the Midwife. 12 Signs of Love is my other favorite Netflix drug. It's hella romantic in a kind of goofy way, and all about female friendship, which always gives me all the feels.
Keep being gentle with yourself and taking those tiny steps. See you in the next FOT! <3
you are finding so many ways to make things better even in the midst of depression! it's really impressive & positive.
just a thought: of course i don't know the situation the way you do, but if i was one of the people friends with both you and your husband, i wouldn't feel uncomfortable if you talked to me about it. being a friend to your husband = helping him understand the deep-rooted basis of PPD and helping him find a better way to react than he is reacting right now. I mean, it doesn't have to be perceived as a giant criticism of your husband who needs judging -- it could easily just be perceived as ways in which you two are suffering right now due to major life event.
just mentioning it, in case you do end up feeling like confiding in a well chosen friend -- it could easily be quite all right. though i understand wanting to preserve the bubble of couple privacy and being-on-a-team in relation to friends.
Who else is feeling that MERCURY IS IN RETROGRADE IN A MAJOR MAJOR WAY? OMG, this week, you guys.
@chevyvan I 100% don't believe in astrology but I'm 100% blaming Mercury. Ugh.
@chevyvan UH, YES. major bullshit going down with my office landlords, with my friend's job communication breakdown, with weird dumb bullshit of a work nature. at least it's not spewing into my personal life?
@SmartCookie I don't either, but this kind of hits it on the nose. My ex-bf is the same sign as me and he contacted me this week: "Mercury will go retrograde in your romance / creativity house from October 21 to November 10. This suggests that the whole month will be mired in possible miscommunications, so go the extra mile to be understood clearly, especially in your personal life. Mercury will retrograde in Scorpio, in your fifth house of true love, which makes me wonder if you are planning to reunite with a former lover. This actually would be a good time to be back in touch with a former sweetheart if you are still in love. Try to find out if the other person would be happy to hear from you before you call. You need to be relatively sure about this, or re-contacting could produce a comedy of errors or only open up an old scab."
SCAB OFFICIALLY OPENED.
@chevyvan oooh that is EVIL.
Happy Friday, y'all! I have a question! What are yall's thoughts on elaborate/inventive/fancy first dates? I have this male client who I sometimes compare dating notes with. He's currently seeing a girl who has been "killing it" so far, like she took him to the world premiere of some new movie at the NYFF, and when he was sick, she brought him cronuts. I think they're still only a few dates in but he is super impressed. So obviously her approach is working for him, which is great, but all I could think when he was telling me this is "WHAT I CAN'T EVEN." I have absolutely no desire to come up with a cutesy date idea for some dude I just met or be the recipient of such an idea from him. Does that make me boring? I think that stuff is super cute between couples that actually know each other and have been together for a while, but I kinda just want to spend my first date with someone drinking and figuring out if I can stand them.
@Oliver St. John Mollusc I like it when the date partner puts SOME effort in, like picking a restaurant or getting theatre tickets, but I don't need some crazy over-the-top thing for the first date. Just buy me some dinner and let me see if I like you. Don't try too hard.
@Oliver St. John Mollusc I don't knowwww but I am replying to this because I'd probably need inspiration just in case something exciting happens in my love life soon, which I'm not saying it will necessarily but if it does, I have to be prepared, because there is a boy and he is interesting.
@Oliver St. John Mollusc He may just be really into her for her and would be gushing the same way if they just took a walk or grabbed a drink. Plus, different strokes for different folks and all that. My first date with my husband, we took my dog for a walk and I high-fived him at the end.
@Oliver St. John Mollusc Well, for me, that kind of effort on the first date front would just be setting the fellow up for an inevitable disappointment when he realizes that all I ever really want to do is watch Netflix in bed.
@cabber Oh totally, the point of all that was not "ew this guy is a freak show." It was more like "I didn't even know there were people in the world for whom this would be a turn-on."
@JanieS That is TOTALLY my approach too. I try to find a balance between making a good first impression and giving them some idea of what dating me will ACTUALLY be like in the real world. My ideal amount of effort from a potential man-friend would be them calling me (not texting) and saying "I've been wanting to check out [bar or restaurant], what day is good for you?" Or this guy I went out with recently who researched Texas bars in NYC so that we could watch my team, the Rangers, on our second date. That was perfect and cute but not too much.
@Oliver St. John Mollusc Oh no, I didn't think you were calling him a freak show. Just wanted to chime in that it IS kind of weird to think about an elaborate date for someone you really don't know, so maybe he's just more into HER than the date piece. I'm totally not able to think right now, so sorry if that makes zero sense.
@cabber No worries! That does make sense.
I was texting with a friend who I used to date (we dated for less than a year 5+ years ago) and he proceeded to tell me how much he misses having sex with me. Which he has done before and I have always just ignored (on the grounds that he was prob drunk at the time) but it is annoying and I don't like it. I pointed out that there were better ways to show his affection and then he got all defensive and self-flagellating about it, which meant I had to reassure him. Dude, just apologize and do your damndest to avoid doing it in the future. Learn to take a note.
@Blushingflwr Eesh. Similar history and I responded with "Why would you tell me this." He never texted me similar sentiments again, but we are not actually friends anymore. You sound better at setting boundaries in a kind way than I am.
@Blushingflwr ugh i am so worried that that will be me in five years. must continue to remind myself how it comes across from your/his perspective. but seriously, it was so good. :-/
@nevergiveaninch I think if you stick to "I miss the time we spent together" it's fine. This particular guy was actually a lot more specific about what aspects of our sex life he missed (and he has a girlfriend!) and it was just Not Cool
@Blushingflwr Ugh. Creeeeeeeeeeeep. >:[
@Blushingflwr Oh ew. You had zero obligation to reassure him in that situation. If someone did that to me, I would say "friends don't say things like this, stop being weird or I'll stop responding."
@Blushingflwr Ugh I have an ex who used to straight up hit me up for phone sex every six months or so, even when he was in a relationship. I tried everything - ignoring, saying no, calling him to ask if he was ok (like dude, we broke up YEARS ago you must be really poorly if you think I'm going to masturbate on the phone with you.)
Then he wants to be friends, and I said, "ok fine, we can be friends, but straight up if you ever say anything sexual to me again I will never speak to ever." And guess what. We are not friends.
'pinners: happy friday!
My contribution to the great catalog of FOT OKC questions: Not to sound like Mr. Seinfeld, but what is the deal with this messaging? I have had multiple instances where a guy asks me for a drink, I say YES and then he never follows up. I have been on this site for weeks and never actually met anyone in person. Does this happen regularly? Maybe it's just an NYC thing? Not to be all gender-stereotyped, but if this guy can't get it together to set a time and place once I've already said yes I assume it does note bode well anyhow.
In other news my birthday is next Wednesday so the week of partying(-but-not-for-me-and-mostly-for-halloween) begins. Huzzah! (but, kind of suck it, halloween you're seriously stealing my birthday thunder here.)
@gna207 It's happened to me a gazillion times, sadly. I have no explanation except that it's easier to flake on people you've never met in real life.
@Oliver St. John Mollusc truth. I've been telling myself that I'm avoiding potential stranger danger. Plus, it gives me more time to work on my night cheese. (I find the whole thing weirdly engrossing and off-putting. Internet!!!!)
@gna207 I think some guys just spam OKC looking for someone to answer as quick as possible.
@gna207 What's funny is that AS I WAS TYPING THIS I got a response from a dude I messaged the other day! We'll see if it actually pans out but I've been getting so few responses lately that anything helps.
@Oliver St. John Mollusc good luck!! go get yoself a free (I hope) drank, lady.
@gna207 I dunno, I used be like "yes, Tuesday works for me. How's [neighborhood]?" and it usually worked like a charm. I'm type Aish, they ALSO better get used to me making plans like a champ and them fitting into them. But yeah, I would suggest a bit more meeting halfway.
I'm getting married one week from tomorrow! and my mommy is coming in town tomorrow to help with last minute tasks! and it's going to be so fun and I am not worried just very very excited. :D <3 :D
@allofthewine Sounds like you're doing it right then! Enjoy!
@allofthewine doing a happy wedding dance!!!!! can't wait! : ]
Question: how much do I need to want to grow out my pixie cut to the next 3-6 months of vagrant-crazy-electrocuted-person-hair bearable?
I do not think I have the fortitude ...
@JanieS Ugh. I grew mine out for a year and then promptly buzzed it all off in the bathroom one day because I couldn't stand it anymore and the previous 12 months of hair-horror (I have Shirley Temple ringlets) was for naught.
ETA: I think you need to want to grow it out a lot!
@Madeline Shoes Noooo that's not the answer I wanted ... :(
@JanieS I grew my pixie cut out, but because of how my hair grows (it's fine, curly, plentiful and tends to grow OUT before it grows DOWN) I took the long, sloooow road. Went in for my haircuts on a fairly regular basis and with each cut we tweaked it just a little until it was finally at the point where I was able to get length and not just...width. But that's my hair, and it's very particular. If you've got straighter, more well-behaved locks just...invest in a lot of bobby pins and headbands and suck it up for a few months. Maybe dye it once or twice to distract you from the pain of Growing It Out.
@JanieS Like @Jinxie says, I think it depends a lot on what kind of hair you have - and how comfortable you are with having unruly hair for a while. I have hair with a bit of a wave and lots of volume, and I don't really care that much how it looks, so while I was growing my pixie out I would just bobby pin the front out of my eyes and let the rest of it sort of... float around back there. My friend has super-straight hair and dealt with growing hers out by pinning it up in little medusa-y coils and twists all over her head. (That can be kind of a young look, though... so ymmv.)
My hair used to be really short. It was not quite a pixie cut, but it was very close. I started wearing headbands a lot and only had the hair at the nape of my neck trimmed every so often. It took at while , but it did grow out.
@Jinxie @alannaofdoom I've got straight hair that is just getting super ... fluffy on the top. Maybe I should just slick it all straight back and pretend I'm in a 1950s biker gang for a while.
@JanieS YES, DO THIS.
@Jinxie I EVEN HAVE A LEATHER JACKET AND COOL BOOTS.
@JanieS Hmm, you need to want that shit. I'm now 1 year and 5 months out of my last pixie cut in growing my hair out, and i'm finally seeing a decent length. I have fine, plentiful, curly hair too, and I dealt with it by trying to pull off the 'doesn't own a mirror and doesn't care' look by putting lots of Bumble & Bumble Brilliantine smoothing creme in my hair to keep it less frizzy. Anyway, long story short, I miss my hot butchy hair, but I also want long Arwen hair too, so I'm giving it a chance by taking prenatal vitamins every other day and getting regular trims. Lots of bobby pins help too.
I got some awesome advice/reassurance from other 'pinners last week about my plantar fasciitis. Turns out I let things get pretty bad, and am currently waiting for MRI results that will tell whether I need surgery to fix things. :(
I'm not allowed to wear flat shoes anymore, but physical therapy really seems to be helping. Anyway, thanks to everyone who responded to my post last week! Y'all are awesome.
WHAT ARE YOUR HALLOWEEN PLANS? i'm going to a goth club tomorrow! I WILL BE DRESSED AS SCARY SPICE, EVERYONE.
@fuck fuck fuck Goin to a party at a friend's house dressed as Hugh Hefner. I'm a little bummed I couldn't convince any dudes to be my Bunnies, but on the plus side, I will be SO COMFORTABLE.
@fuck fuck fuck I'm going to a party tomorrow night, and seeing an all-female Weezer cover band on actual halloween (both occasions I will be dressed as David Bowie..) Oh and going to a screening of The Craft the day before halloween.
@planforamiracle I tried to have a screening of the Craft, but it wasn't on Netflix instant, so now I feel like a bit of a holiday failure.
@Oliver St. John Mollusc I love your costume idea. You definitely need to recycle that with bunnies when you know more fun dudes in the future.
@fuck fuck fuck My knitting group's coming over on Sunday to eat junk food and watch "scary" [Hocus Pocus] movies and...that's pretty much all I'm doing that's Halloweeny. I'm such a boring old crank now. Supposedly roommates are having an actual party-party later in the week, but I'll be out at a show.
@adorable-eggplant OH because The Craft wasn't on Netflix I actually broke down and ordered a copy from Amazon and it arrived yesterday. I am so so excited.
@Jinxie Forethought! I envy you type-a go-getters so much. Especially because I had to settle for watching Vampire Diaries grumpily.
@adorable-eggplant My roommate made a list of the best (at least, her "the best) Halloween-appropriate movies available on Watch Now, which I will share with you all:
Elvira Mistress of the Dark
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Black Sunday (1960)
Nightmare before Christmas
Cabin in the Woods
I'm Not Scared
Let the Right One In
White Zombie (1932- Bela Lugosi)
Ju-On: The Grudge
Now, personally, I love Vampire Diaries and don't think it's "settling" to watch it (though if you really want to get spooked you should be watching Supernatural) but there are plenty of other Halloweeny options!
@adorable-eggplant Also lol at "type-a go getter". I'm pretty sure this is the only time I've ever been referred to that way, but thank you for your confidence in my skillz.
@Jinxie Thanks for the list! I'm a type-B person, but in the chillest city ever, so every now and then, some one mistakes me for driven. I always laugh, because an actual city where people had actual ambitions would eat me for breakfast.
Still, every year around July 4th I wan to watch 'Independence Day' and every year I am disappointed to find that someone has already checked it out from the video store... :(
And Vampire Diaries had an actual scary moment that made me scream, but I am the wimpiest, so other people's milage may vary.
This week at work was horrendous, particularly today, and I have to go back there tomorrow, and wahhh. I almost cried today, actually, but talking to my mom helped. I love my mom. And then I took a nap.
Also, other than work, I have felt really great this week. I don't want to go into detail, but, uhm, it turns out that receiving positive sexual attention from a man does a lot for my self-esteem. (Nothing has actually happened, still got my V-card here, but, you know, sexy talking and whatnot.) So uh yeah that is pretty great. /flits away
My question to the 'pin-teriat: Any suggestions for good quality and well fitting bras? I am so over VS and have found that very few of their bras fit me well. I understand that every body is different but general suggestions on well-made bras would be great, especially from other smallish busted (34B) ladies. Especially lightly lined/ slight push ups. Not ones promising to add 3 cup sizes.
@knockout I don't know, but I second this request!
@knockout I like Huit (the "mrs wang") and Fortnight! they're both on the pricey side but worth it, to me.
@knockout my advice is to go to lord and taylor or nordstrom and have them size you, then bring you bras that match your desires. they're usually really, really helpful and knowledgable--i think i've found 3 out of the 4 bras i own that way.
@knockout 34B here. I would suggest going to a department store and having someone measure you and then trying on a ton of different ones. I never did that until I was 30 years old and it made a big difference to just take the time to really find out what worked for my body and my clothes vs. just grabbing one off the shelf.
@knockout I've had really great luck with thelittlebracompany.com. They only go up to C cups, so all their stuff is suited for smaller-busted ladies in particular. I've only bought push-ups from them, but they rate each according to how much extra oomph they give.
@fuck fuck fuck Yeah, probably time to get resized. I am trying an at-home try on service from True&Co. I filled out a quiz on their website, chose 3 bras, and their "experts" are sending me 2 more. Hopefully it works!
@knockout it maybe sounds obvious, but calvin klein makes great un-padded and slightly padded tee shirt bras. i am a 34 a/b and always seem to have luck with that brand. it's not super exciting but it works for me! and maybe you too.
@planforamiracle Ooo Mrs. Wang is refined, yet saucy. Diggin it.
@knockout Get theeself to the A Bra That Fits sub-reddit and/or Bratabase. Measure twice, pick bras once and all that. I was wearing 36Bs and it turns out that 32DDs are, like, miracle bras in comparison. Nordstroms is more likely to have better fitters than other stores, plus they carry a broader range of band and cup sizes so they are more likely to put you in the right size rather than just one of the sizes they carry (looking at you, VS).
What brands work for you is super dependent on what shape your breasts are (Wacoals work great for me but DKNYs not so much, for example). But there are lots of ladies on the internet just dying to help you get into the right bra, so check them out.
@knockout Freya, Panache, Natori and Chantell all make higher quality bras with broader size ranges, but again, shape is a factor too, so don't be afraid to try a bunch of different brands. Just like jeans shopping, basically.
@planforamiracle the Huits are soooo cute. And sooo spendy. But seriously, gorgeous bras. I was trying to explain to myself last week why I wasn't going to buy one, but I think I only did a mediocre job of convincing myself.
@knockout I am 34B and only wear Gap Body wireless (super affordable, NO WIRES!) and target sports bras (even more affordable, way more comfy!).
@nevergiveaninch Seconding Calvin Klein! I've found the best selection at Nordstrom.
For some reason VS is the worst as far as quality and fit. It's puzzling. I've actually had great luck with H&M, of all places, if you want a cheap cute bra that fits. Otherwise the on-line webshop Her Room is pretty great, and has excellent instructions for sizing yourself at home. I like Cosabella a lot.
@knockout You do probably need to get resized as apparently VS is the worst bra fitter in the world. There's sort of a bra revolution going on because in Europe there are like twice as many sizes and the U.S. has been trying to fit everyone into about six sizes of bra all these years. Lots and lot of bra fitting blogs are out there, but start by having a Nordstrom lady or similar measure you. Also, most people take a smaller band and bigger cup than they thought, because cup size is relative to band. A 32DD, for example, has wayyyyyy smaller cups than a 36DD. So sizes like F and G are not really inherently enormous.
Read around: it's interesting.
@knockout I have had good luck with barenecessities.com; they carry a lot of different brands and I'm a busty lady, so probably my specific recommendations are not useful. I do think that bras are one of the things that are actually worth spending money on; BN is not that much more expensive than VS (with some outliers, obviously), they have ridiculous sales all the frigging time, and the bras I've bought there fit way better and make my boobs look awesome. (I am wearing an old VS bra right now and it's just fitting all wrong and driving me nuts.)
You might also start reading lingerie blogs to get a sense of what's out there -- I like http://thelingerielesbian.com/ but there are about a million of them for every size, shape, style.
Even if you're having a bad week, don't worry, girl. It will be alright. Idris is here.
@Helvetica Thank you, Idris! How did you know?
Oh, right, because you're Idris Elba, only the coolest dude alive.
@Helvetica I'll admit that Idris Elba is at least a good third of the reason I want to see the new Thor movie. 50% is Tom Hiddleston and the leftover is Kat Dennings, the awesome warrior lady, and Rene Russo being a badass.
I'm seeing Fiona Apple tonight!!!! It's a seated show and I'm going alone, which I wouldn't care about except that I'm a little scared I'll end up sobbing on the shoulders of the poor souls seated on either side of me.
okay, snappy dressers. what are we wearing to work? business casual is sucking all the fun out of me. i used to love all my clothes (tight jeans, sweaters, beat up tees, vans, chunky heels) but now every morning is so hard! how do i avoid feeling like i'm playing dress-up every day and start feeling like my old self? the main sticking point for me is pants. my only work-appropriate pants are cropped, front-pleat black pants in sad, personality-free wool with stupid annoying side zips or stupid tab fronts. not that there's anything wrong with those styles! i just don't care for them on me. the tab front is a particular cause of strife. so what do you business casual types like to wear for work? (and am i maybe over-thinking this just a little?)
@nevergiveaninch I would also like to know. I have basic ones from the Gap in a "curvy" fit, but usually skirts are more flattering (long torso+muscular butt/hips/thighs=stumpy in pants).
@nevergiveaninch I'm guessing you're not allowed jeans? My workplace allows jeans so I guess I lucked out there. Most of my work outfits consist of jeans/pants, T-shirt and cardigan. (I loooove T-shirts so I try to dress them up a little so I don't look too messy but I still get to wear them)
How do you feel about dresses? I like them because it's just one piece and you throw it on and you're out the door. Maybe consider shopping for a comfy sweater dress that you can add a belt to? Because then all you need are tights and footwear (boots or flats or even your chunky heels, maybe! whatever floats your boat) and you're done and you look put together.
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Seconded, I work in a pretty conservative environment and I am all about wool dresses in the fall and winter. It always looks polished but is also comfortable and easy. You just have to make peace with the idea of dry cleaning (if you aren't at peace with it already).
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)
I almost never wear pants to work because dresses are just so much easier and I have a hard time finding pants that fit (though Loft had these velvety skinny cords that ACTUALLY FIT and looked cute and are business casual-ish if you squint just so and I loved them so much I bought two more pairs in different colors when they had a 50% off sale online yesterday). I definitely tend to push the boundaries of our firm dress code - I follow the letter of the code, if not the spirit (i.e., technically there's no prohibition against that quirky hand made dress I got on Etsy, that I wear with boots & blue tights, but I'm pretty sure it's not what the Powers That Be had in mind for their staff) - and I think you can get away with a little more funk with a dress.
@nevergiveaninch i agree, work pants are awful, i literally do not own a pair. skirts and dresses all the way! i like sheath dresses, solid colours or patterned or whatever, because you can throw a blazer on and look professional, but they're actually pretty comfy. that or funky blouses and pencil skirts, definitely my go-to. maybe opaque tights and belted sweater-dresses would be your style, with cute wedge booties if you don't need to wear pumps?
@nevergiveaninch Ok, my non-pants wardrobe is similar to yours. I hate skirts and dresses but work pants are definitely hard to find. I have one real workhorse pair that's a thick black fabric that I got on sale at Banana Republic. On bottom I wear mostly flats and on top I have a rotating cast of blouses and fancy t shirts (I also hate button downs) with a blazer/jacket/cardigan over it or just a sweater. I also like a casual scarf and rock that for as much of the year as I can stand it.
A big ol necklace also does a lot to pull a look together.
@nevergiveaninch Pencil skirts and flashy colored cardigans and/or blazers. I am not really sheath dress shaped and I'm not good about getting to the tailor, so skirts are a must for me. I have a super swank stretch wool one that I got at Nordstrom Rack and it is my favorite. (And now I love the brand but the normal prices are soooo spendy and very few pieces make it to the rack in my size and I'm super sad about it)
I'm having a heck of a time replacing my (no longer fitting, just admit it already) miracle slacks, so you have my sympathies.
@Jinxie Oooooh I love those Loft cords, I got them too! Super comfy but don't look like sausage casings on my legs, unlike most jeggings-type pants. The almost make me wish I had to wear business casual again? Eh, not really. In terms of pants, though, I'm a big fan of black jeans as pretending to be black pants, which they are, but they're also jeans, which are more comfortable and cool looking.
I also liked wearing wool pencil skirts with brightly colored tights and booties, or my Frye boots (add personality and not really office-y but still work if you do it with a skirt all nice?). The pencil skirt dresses it up enough so you can get away with more silly stuff (in my head, at least).
In terms of pants, I don't ever know what to do in the winter because besides my black jeans, most nice work pants really do need dry cleaning/ironing and I don't do that... But I like wearing tweed pants, wool pants, etc. (Express for lower-budget, J. Crew is nice too, although more $$$). Have you tried your cropped black pants with more fun shoes? I would try cuffing them a couple times and wearing them with brightly-colored flats, oxfords, booties, heels if you do that.
@nevergiveaninch I generally hate pants, so YMMV, but I am kind of obsessed with gray sweater/wool dresses. I think I own 6. Two of those are pure merino wool from Lands End Canvas, and I got them on sale for about $30 each. They're incredibly comfortable, drape well, and can be dressed up or down. Those + Hue sweater tights = as comfortable as pajamas. I wear a low-cut t-shirt under them so I don't have to wash them as much, but they can also be machine-washed and dried flat, unlike tailored wool stuff. Two of my other ones are from TJMaxx, but they tend to carry acrylic or acrylic blends, which aren't as warm or durable.
I also own a million wool straight/pencil skirts (I had a lucky streak in my thrifting), but I have a harder time finding ones that fit well, and they wrinkle more easily than knits.
@Faintly Macabre woah woah woah no one told me about these lands end dresses! they are all pretty cute! who knew? (you did.) i think i might have to try one... thanks!
@nevergiveaninch I've found that I enjoyed business casual SO much more when I found pants I liked. The ones I found were at H&M and are "nice" enough for work, but definitely in the skinny category rather than the pleated trouser pant category. Maybe it would help finding pants that are in more business casual like fabrics (like khaki material, but I prefer black or gray pants), and with nicer styling than jeans (like, the pockets styled more like trousers instead of jeans) but that have a fit that is more like the jeans you love?
@nevergiveaninch I missed this thread entirely, but I have to comment because regardless of your orientation, Autostraddle has an amazing series called "Lez Get Dressed for Work" and every installation is fantastic. They cover both femme-y and more androgynous tastes and their article on suits is my fav.
Also, I'm really happy because I dragged a friend to see Machete Kills last night and he loved it! I have a couple of standard moviegoing buddies but I was afraid no one would be down for this one because it's too silly for one of them and too violent for the other. So I dragged another friend along who knew nothing about the whole Grindhouse thing and he totally loved it and wanted to go home and watch the first one right away. Yay!
I got engaged! And I have wasted SO MUCH time this week staring at my ring. Which I found one day through a link in a comment on an "Ask a..." on the 'pin!
@ellochka Congratulations! I hope your wedding planning is smooth and stress-free (this is coming from someone who is two weeks away from the big day, and it was a mostly stress-free time).
Flying to NY on Halloween aaauuuugggghhh! Can't wait! Should be a great weekend all in all, and super empty thanks to the marathon (oh, wait...). Very excited!
HELP my boss is a writer, and in his latest story, his lone female character has a line that is basically, "I only hang out with DUDES 'cause girls are too COMPLICATED! I'm not like OTHER GIRLS! *put on sunglasses, ollies into the sun without spilling her whiskey*"
He has asked for elaboration on my note of "I hate this." How can I explain how terrible this is without just underlining my previous note several times??
@muggles Explain that girls like that are a) often putting on an act to please men b) buying into patriachal, misogynistic ideas about what women are like c) lazy writing
@muggles Make him read "Fangirl" by Rainbow Rowell because that is actually one of the plot lines, and I will not spoiler it (but basically, you will want to read it because you will empathize SO Hard).
Short version: "This characterization is trite and cliched and limp. Try harder to describe a person rather than a male fantasy." (said as a lady who loves whiskey, because it really is the drink of the gods)
@muggles what Blushingflwr wrote.
or maybe linking this article
@muggles tell him it's a flat character and, despite his best interests as a writer, the reader won't be able to fully connect to her, and thus she has no value.
@Blushingflwr Noooo, because then he will just tweak the character into a girl who says all that stuff, but it's because she's just insecure and doesn't realize she's beautiful (but that's what makes her beautiful) and then I will just vom in my mouth a bit more.
@muggles I don't know, but I laughed out loud at your note. Perfect.
Also, I think, sure, lone woman in the village could say that, just like a character COULD say "I like to kick puppies, and I think that's cool and acceptable," but it's not compelling at all if we're supposed to take it at face value rather than as a commentary about the character. Like, if your fictional babe feels that way, cool (not cool, but) but if it's integral to the story that I believe she feels this way, along with all the sad baggage that idea can represent, then show her acting itchy at a woman offering her emotional intimacy or something, don't just have her say this bullshit. Then show her looking in the mirror and describing her boobs to herself, as all chicks do each day.
@all Thank you for all the great answers! I'm fairly certain he'll get it now (with all my citations!). The character is 95% great and doesn't behave at all in the way that this one line is suggesting, which is partly why it made me so sad!
I'm offering a couple alternate suggestions so hopefully one of those will work. Maybe she can just take a swig of whiskey instead of saying anything right there?
@muggles I don't have advice, but that is the best note ever.
A few FOTs ago I asked for advice on my potentially upcoming at-home manicure fundraiser party.
I decided to go through with it after all! It's next Saturday and so far about 7 or 8 people have RSVP'd and a bunch of others just haven't replied yet, and I have it mostly planned out, and I might actually have someone with nail art skills there so people might have even fancier nail designs than I can give them! So that means that I'll be at about 20% of my fundraising goal on the second day of Movember. Huzzah!
I'm going to do a bit of baking this weekend so that there can be cookies.
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Congrats! That sounds like such an awesome idea [I remember being enthusiastic last FOT, and I still am] and if I had an ounce of talent I would do that too. I did some baking for my work's charity bakesale, and I'm going to buy several raffle tickets [the prizes are dope], but nail art sounds like so much fun.
@adorable-eggplant Yay for you getting involved! I can never gauge how interested my office population is as a whole about charity stuff, so it makes me really happy to hear about people who take part in bake sales and raffles and such :) Last year I kind of felt like I had to twist some arms and do a bit of micromanaging to get people involved, but last Movember's bake sale seems to have left an impression on people, and that makes me happy.
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) I'm also going to suck at bowling for a good cause. It's one of the things I love about my work place: how involved everyone gets in the charity stuff. It's pretty awesome. I'm also trying to step up my personal giving, now that I'm on a budgeting kick, but that's a work in progress.
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) By which I meant, go ahead and bug people. Eventually it will be a tradition that newcomers can enjoy.
@adorable-eggplant I did actually get a reply from our new IT guy after I sent an officewide reminder that Movember was starting/call to mustaches. He seems really happy that his co-workers are getting involved and doing something for the cause, and he said some really nice things. So that was a pretty good motivator for me to keep bugging people.
How are you fellow pinners?
Can I babble for a little bit?
I missed class on Tuesday and on Thursday, I was chatting with archeology boy and I asked him "So what did we do Tuesday?" He then gives me his notes and I was pretty surprised since I didn't expect him to give me his notes. Maybe it's a sign that he likes me? or( mostly likely) he assumes that I was going to ask him the notes. Or am I over analyzing something so simple?
On other news, I am never buying something recommended by Xovain.
DAMMIT, THE LAST BIRTHDAY OF MY TWENTIES AND FOT THREAD STARTS EARLY.
Anyway, I'm 29 today! It's weird. Guys, what should I drink tonigh, besides "everything"?
@katiemcgillicuddy this! http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/shanghai-buck-cocktail-50400000118277/
(I tried looking for a sports-themed birthday gif, but couldn't find one ANYWHERE. So here's Alf as a consolation prize.)
@katiemcgillicuddy Happy birthday!
@ clara morena Looks amazing. Thanks!
@Jinxie Alf is NEVER a consolation prize. Many thanks!
@IROTOTR Thanks, friend!
@katiemcgillicuddy AAAAAHHH HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY! Birthday weekend? You should drink 1) the tears of your enemies and 2) some good-ass bourbon (possibly in an Old Fashioned).
@katiemcgillicuddy Thanks buddy! Well that settles that, if you see Flo from Progressive drinking either tears or sweet, sweet bourbon tonight, you'll know it's me.
HELP I need to throw together a last minute costume for a party tomorrow? Ideas anyone? I have a limited budget and the party will be full of hipsters, if that helps. My mind is just a vast space of blankness.
@lasso tabasco Old school ghost? Like, sheet with eyes cut out, done.
I think I used up all my good costume ideas as a child.
@lasso tabasco an ipod connected to speakers
booze, food, and cupcakes because who doesn't love cupcakes.
and bowls of Halloween candy
A party with hipsters requires an Internet-friendly or punny costume, methinks.
-Fairy wings and a fallen tree branch = pixie sticks
-Something with "Pat on the back" like a post-it note that says "pat" or a picture of Pat from SNL in the 80s
-A woman laughing alone with salad!
-Is the "50 shades of grey" costume played out yet? Because if you live near a paint store, just pretend you really need those grey paint chips!
-One year I dressed up as the video game Pong. I wore all black and sewed two bits of white ribbon and a white circle onto my shirt.
-I once saw a girl at a comic-con who wore regular clothes, but carried a sign that said "the Doctor's next companion." Instant costume!
-Another "regular clothes" idea: werewolf, pre-transformation.
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) I stole your woman laughing alone with salad costume idea last night! I also drank white zinfandel out of a coffee mug in silent desperation (and carried around a tiny pink wine bottle). My husband went as a market researcher, complete with pens that didn't work and a poorly written survey about women and salads. It went over quite well.
SPORTS SPORTS SPORTSSSSS WHY DO YOU TREAT ME THIS WAAAAAY
Washington plays Peyton Manning and the Fighting Peytons this week. It's going to be interesting! No joke, I think we need to score upwards of 50 to have a chance. God help us.
Matt Williams is the Nats new manager. I like it, this was the rumor and everyone seems pretty happy with it (except for some of the players who lobbied for Randy Knorr, which, guys, that may not have helped you)
Basketball is starting soon, WIZARDS NBA TITLE OR BUST (haha, I got jokes).
Ovechkin is on FIRE and I love it. 9 goals in 9 games, yes please, I will take it.
Guys...talk to me about your clubs/squads/teams.
@katiemcgillicuddy My girlfriend yelled so loudly at the TV last night during the Cards/Sox game that our dog ran to the door begging to be let out. That is my week in sports!
@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose Haha, oh gosh, Cards fan or Sox fan?
I went to a Celtics/Timberwolves game over the weekend! [insert Kevin Love pun here]
I'm going to the Habs/Sharks game tomorrow! [insert Hertl pun here]
My big brother is going to Detroit for the Lions/Cowboys game. Is it worth asking him to bring me anything back? Should I have any interest in the Lions? Do they have cool merch?
@katiemcgillicuddy Cards. She was yelling in happiness (I think).
@katiemcgillicuddy Michigan has a bye this week (and they play our "little brother"/rival Michigan State next week), so I'll be spending Saturday breathing a sigh of relief over them making it into the BCS rankings (at #22, natch)... and watching the UCLA/Oregon game (I really like Oregon's mascot.)
On Sunday, I get to see the Patriots on TV for once! And there's no late game in the Chicago market, meaning CBS will start The Good Wife on time! Yay!
ALSO: Not necessarily a "sport" in the traditional sense... but figure skating has started up again! Which means the Olympics are soon... and I'm artistically entertained until gymnastics comes back next summer.
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) I grew up outside Detroit and the Lions have done surprisingly well recently considering their not-so-great past. That being said, unless you're a displaced fan (like me), a fan of any one of their players, like the colors of blue/gray/silver/black and/or lions in general, you probably don't need a souvenir. Tell him to enjoy the game - Ford Field's a great stadium and has a really fun atmosphere.
@Aspiriationally Natalie Ha, I bet you guys don't call them "little brother" when it comes to basketball! ;) I'd like to see UCLA get the upset, coming off such a weak offensive performance (compared to their stellar offensive year otherwise) maybe they're pissed enough to fight their way to a win. It'd be cool to see, anyway! And figure skating may get made fun of, but sure as shit it's a sport, what they do is craaaaazy. Cannot. Wait. For the Olympics.
@Rookie Oh preseason NBA! Shit, though, I'd watch Kevin Love in any game, the man is a monster.
@ROTOTR Ah. So the lesser of two evils. Good for her!
@katiemcgillicuddy I've been to one regular-season NBA game in my life and I loved it and I would like to see more of them, but the preseason game was pretty cool! Kevin Love is a very large human. I mean, I knew that, but he's a big guy. Holy crap. Also I think I like the Wolves now?
@katiemcgillicuddy et al: I'm still in WTF mode over the end of last night's baseball game. I get that obstruction is a rule, but it seems kind of ridiculous. Hoping the Red Sox come back in Game 4.
The DC football guys are only losing to Denver 21-27 right now. Go Washington! Also, the Cowboys lost by one point to Detroit, whoo hoo! The Jets are also being creamed by Cinci, which I will tease my Jets-fan husband with later tonight.
@Rookie: how was the NBA game? I haven't been watching much Celts yet - it's the pre-season. It's weird to see KG and Pierce in Brooklyn unis.
@Bittersweet The game was fun! It did sort of feel like a preseason game, but it was good. It was definitely weird to see the Celtics without Garnett and Pierce in the lineup. Luckily, Kelly Olynyk's hair provided a good distraction. Kris Humphries was generally oafish, as I imagine he is 99% of the time, but seems to work with his teammates really well. The team as a whole probably looked more or less like you'd expect them to look.
Guy I slept with last weekend is clearly not interested and showed it in the best way, by ignoring the majority of my texts. At this point I'm just trying to get my earrings back. My shitty Wet Seal earrings I bought to lose at Bonnaroo but fuck, they are mine, give them to me.
Taking a lot of heart from Polly's No Tepid Motherfuckers advice. I have an index card leaning against my tv that says TEPID MOTHERFUCKERS and it is crossed out. Still angry though. Working on it.
Tell me about your dating life right now single/semi-single 'Pinners! I need stories of commiseration and stories of hope.
@Gulf of Finland today on the way to work I had to face both the bus driver who asked me for my phone number a few weeks ago AND this creepy dude I see on the bus and metro sometimes who keeps his distance but if he doesn't I will punch his face. Is that good for commiseration? I don't know.
@Gulf of Finland :( It sounds kinda rude, but can you just drop by his place when you think he'll be there? He can't ignore you if you are already there, right?
@Gulf of Finland No no spoils of war let them go. No more energy on tepid motherfuckers, in whatever form.
@RNL Yeahhh that's what I keep thinking. I'm pretty sure part of wanting to get my earrings involves wanting to see him again for some scrap of closure or some imaginary shit that's probably actually a tiny voice telling me he actually wants to hang out and has just been unclear. Shut up tiny voice, you are sad and wrong. No more energy on tepid motherfuckers.
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Misandry. Fuuuck.
@Gulf of Finland
ugh. dating life blows. been single for 3 months and i'm starting to test the waters of dating again. okc is a wasteland.
i also texted my ex on sunday after not having talked for some 7 weeks, and i got the dreaded "who is this i just got a new phone" reply. thanks for transferring me over to your new phone, asshole.
but, we did have a nice catch-up chat. and then i texted him again two days later and we had our banter-filled chats of yore and now i just want him to want me back.
Anybody else hate Halloween with the fire of 1000 burning bras? (did you like my feminist joke?) (except actually I don't hate it because feminism, I hate it because costumes are the worst)
@honey cowl But candy is the best!
ETA: Your feelings are also valid. Although caaaandyyy.
@honey cowl I don't hate it, not nearly as much as I hate New Year's Eve, but I hate that when I dress up, I fall strictly in the middle of the road. I never have the best costume, and I can never just buy something random from a store, or dress up as "a cat" and everyone thinks it's cute. Also, I guess you have to dress up for your audience, which is why my Liz Lemon and 90's Gwen Stefani costumes only received lukewarm reactions. And why I didn't even bother with the "sexy Tim Tebow" idea last year that I thought would have been hilarious, but no one at the one Halloween party that I get invited to would have laughed at.
But I guess since I can't get free candy from strangers and I don't like scary movies and find "sexy" costumes ridiculous (okay except for the aforementioned because LOL), there isn't much for me, as an adult(?) to do on Halloween.
Except listen to Thriller. Does anyone else just want to listen to Thriller a couple of times and then call it a wrap on Halloween?
ETA: okay maybe I don't hate Halloween because it involves candy and puns.
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) Yes to all of these things. My halloween plans are to hide out, listen to Thriller and the Monster Mash once each, and buy a bag of clearance candy the next day.
ugh, yes. i hate costumes! i totally suck at them. but just think, we have thanksgiving up next! and for some (most?) of us, christmas! those two i get reaaalllly into.
SEXY TIM TEBOW IS AMAZING!!!!
I live in Gainesville, Florida (home of UF). Tebows are a dime a dozen on halloween, but sexy Tim Tebow I have not actually seen.
@Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that) SERIOUS Q: Is there such a thing as Sexy Tim Tebow? Not on my watch!
But seriously that is an excellent costume.
I am going to a last minute Halloween party tomorrow night, and I don't have a costume. What can a somewhat pregnant lady wear to a Halloween party?
If I can't come up with a better idea, I will probably end up being pregnant lady Where's Waldo because I pretty much already have that costume.
@MrsTeacherFace Pregnant [insert celebrity here]? Pregnant Beyonce? Pregnant Kim Kardashian with a compass on her belly? Pregnant Britney from 2005 wearing the "I have the golden ticket" shirt?
@MrsTeacherFace Bed Sheet Ghost with too many holes cut in it and a bag with a rock in it.
@MrsTeacherFace Last year I wrote "Ceilings are No. 1!" on the front of a blank t-shirt, then "Go Ceilings!" on the back. I was a ceiling fan. You could do this.
@MrsTeacherFace Rosemary (Rosemary's Baby)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Short blonde wig, dress, knife. Done.
ETA: Sorry for the ridiculous amount of exclamation points. I have been wanting to do that costume for a long time. Also your SO could wear a devil costume (or just devil horns) if you wanted it to be a super easy couple costume.
@MrsTeacherFace Zombie with the baby bursting out? Like http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeankes/3434653065/in/gallery-29090642@N02-72157631002689140/
@de Pizan slightly more comical version here
A colleague and I celebrate Gothtober, where for the month of October, we wear all or mostly black, and our gothest accessories and makeup looks. We're at the tail end of it, and we're both running out of ideas, but it's overall been a very productive month. The really crucial move I made a few weeks ago was to bleach my eyebrows white so that they disappear on my pale-ish face. This look still freaks out the normals, everybody!
@frenz.lo Wow. I admire your dedication to your theme. What sort of place do you work in? Because I don't see that flying at my law firm...
@Jinxie Byooo-tay salon. It is a lawless place.
OH also Pinners, any advice for dealing with seasonal affective disorder? It's that time of year (for me at least)!
I personally have a therapy lamp (that I often forget to use) to take the edge off in the mornings and vitamin D that I take in the middle of the day, and the vitamin especially makes a big difference.
I think figuring out a way to develop habits and use the therapy-that-works regularly is key.
Cheers to you from another winter-sufferer-- I have cold weather asthma, and absolutely hate the regular therapies for that, but have been noticing a big quality of life improvement when I do. (a rotation of unpleasant nasal washes!).
I have a lady question, even though it's late on the east coast. I am a little behind the times and until a year and a half ago, didn't know I was supposed to be moisturizing! Oops! Now I'm realizing I have little wrinkles around my eyes and tops of my cheeks. I'm kind of a squinty person and I think it's from that. Is there anti-wrinkle serums or something we're all using but no one has filled me in? I'm only twenty-seven! Eep!
@drydenlane Here's what I think I know! Moisturizing will probably not help you one iota, nor any serum or what have you, except maybe prescription retinoids and of course sunscreen. Wrinkles are normaaaaaaal. They are the evidence of your face moving a bunch as you live your wonderful life.
But also apparently retinols. I'm gonna try to get a prescription when I finally see a dermatologist 1 million years from now.
@drydenlane I smear oil on my face after I wash it (either coconut, jojoba, or some oil mix from the store), which helps a tiny bit with wrinkles from dry skin. However, if you think the wrinkles are from age, you need sunscreen for prevention and some type of Retinoid (like Retin A) for the ones you already have. There are a ton of articles about the different types. The stronger ones are more effective but can have side effects and you need to be really careful about sunscreen. I think there are some old posts with good recommendations here from Jane.
@drydenlane I third the sunscreen! Really sunscreen and retinols are the only wrinkle treatments with any genuine scientific support.
@drydenlane Thanks y'all. I am very low maintenance with my skin so I wasn't sure if Retinols were something that most of us are doing and I never heard about or what. My moisturizer has sunscreen and I live in the gray Pacific Northwest, but I'll be better about sunscreen on sunny days and consider trying Retinols. Poor face. :/
@drydenlane I started using night cream a few years ago (like at age 36) and think they make a difference. I usually buy L'Oreal stuff, in a blue jar.
Moisturizing cream won't get rid of wrinkles, but it does help prevent new ones forming. it's a good idea, especially now that it's winter!
@drydenlane I use a retinol cream pretty regularly, and try to use sunscreen when I remember (I live in the UK, so it's real easy to forget about that part, much like the Northwest). Also, I noticed that my wrinkles (center of forehead, crow's feet, smile lines, and I'm 29) appear much more when I've been drinking booze the day before, and/or am dehydrated. It's like everything collapses without the ample water consumption :/
@drydenlane OMGosh yes, sunscreen, spackle that stuff on and don't forget neck an collarbones that get so weathered. Also forearms, esp. arm that's in window on your driving side. It may sound like I need to Get a Life but having those little skin cancers burned off hurt like hell, I had ? band aids stuck on all the spots, and those burns will turn white and ugly as I age. So, sunscreen, yes. Sunburn is a scar too, makes your skin thicken and get leathery. Prevent the moisture loss.
Worst week ever ever everrrrr. My sister in law went into early labor this week and lost the baby. She was born alive, but had defects they had not known about and died shortly after. Absolutely horrifying, terrible, the worst thing ever.
Oh no! So sorry to hear. Hugs for you and everyone in your family!
@mooserider I am so so sorry.
I know it's late... Has anybody used the birth control pill Necon 1/35? (I think it's the generic form of Ortho Novum.) I was prescribed it this past week and haven't started taking it yet, because I am terrified of the possible side effects.
@WardenGentles I've taken it for, I don't know, at least 5 years, on and off? It comes as Necon or Nortrel (lately my pharmacy has had supply issues, so I've gotten one or the other in alternating weeks- Nortrel uses less packaging, but that's the only difference). I've never had any trouble with it or really noticed any side effects (no notable weight gain, mood shifts, or libido issues). But my periods are lighter and actually tolerable and stuff.
Disclaimer: I've never been particularly sensitive to my baseline hormones (don't really PMS, maybe two days a month where my mood is sensitive to hormones- I go very mildly manic and then sort of weepy, but it's pretty moderate), so I wasn't surprised that I didn't notice much of a change on birth control. You could always keep a mood journal and just stop taking it if things don't work out- I've always liked knowing I could make the hormones stop when I wanted, which is why I've never really considered hormonal IUDs or shots.
@Beaks Thank you! I won't be taking it for birth control, but to control bleeding. I am probably most worried about putting on weight -- I am a bit neurotic when it comes to body stuff. I probably won't need to take it long term, so if I really don't like it I can quit.
@WardenGentles It is definitely awesome on the bleeding front- I went from a five day period with two days of really, really heavy bleeding (basically right on the edge of probably fine and maybe a medical issue) to a 3-day, super light period.
@WardenGentles This is suuuuper late, but I've been on Necon 1/35 for 12 years. I originally started taking it because of irregular periods, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis. I've never had any side effects other than it making my boobs a little bigger. I take the pill continuously now (skipping placebos so I don't have any periods) and it works great. Probably as a result of being on it for so long, I'm really sensitive to the hormones, so if I miss a pill I get really crampy. Only happens if I'm more than 12 hours late with it though. Hope this helps, let me know if you need any other help with the Necon!
I just plopped down my payment for my first semester of grad school and I feel broke but also good? Now I just want to celebrate this best time of year (the week before halloween) but I have to study....and work...Anyone else working a full time job AND in grad school full time? How u surviving?
Managed to go from part-time pre-school teaching and no school to full-time preschool teaching AND full-time grad school in the last two weeks (this is in addition to my baby gestating duties).
I am surviving by watching Natalie Merchant sing poems on the TED channel on Netflix and perusing all of the cute wool diaper covers on Etsy. While half-assedly attending to my two giant projects and a month's worth of lesson planning and bulletin board making.
So...not well apparently.
@Harriet Welch dang girl, you better get it! I've been listening to those 10 hour long youtube videos of rain sounds to try to calm myself down. It's the closest to relaxing I can get at the moment.
@flashcrash You can do it! Just focus on the next thing -- it can be overwhelming when you look at all the shit you have to do. Put one foot in front of the other.
I tried that. "soothing" things tend to annoy the shit outta me. I ended up going to a coffee shop with my husband, putting on my headphones and having netflix playing some shitty crime tv in a background window while I worked.
Actually got one full assignment done before the need for real food overwhelmed. I figure I'll get into a groove. I'm just finding school harder now than I usually do. I'm sure the looming baby distraction is the culprit. C'est la vie.
Hopefully your rain sounds are working for you!
ust before I looked at the draft which said $8169, I did not believe ...that...my mother in law woz realy receiving money part time from there pretty old laptop.. there aunt had bean doing this less than and resantly repayed the loans on their cottage and purchased a brand new Fiat Multipla. a fantastic read.........www.max38.com

Oh!!!!! I only just saw this and it's Monday morning and what a way to start the week! THIS IS HILARIOUS.
I've long wondered why this isn't called the "Weekend Open Thread" as it's a fun place to hang out. Then we'd see updates to the "Gaaak! Here I go, trying (x)!" posts.
@Myrtle I know! I'm always deadly curious, and then sometimes I miss the updates if they happen in next weeks thread. :(
my classmate's step-mother makes $66/hour on the laptop. She has been out of a job for five months but last month her pay check was $19647 just working on the laptop for a few hours. website link<<>><<>>....www.max38.com
