And the Winner of the 2013 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Is...

...Banana Joe, this nine-year-old Affenpinscher from the Netherlands. In the video above, he's winning Best in Breed (Toy); yesterday he won it all. According to the American Kennel Club, the Affenpinscher is known as "a peppy dog that has the face and impish nature of a monkey," and was originally used for killing rats and mice. (Which would actually make for a spectacular live-competition category.) The AKC also ranks breeds by popularity, if you're interested.

And then, because first thing in the morning is definitely the right time for it, Petfinder.

Is It just me or is Ernesto getting a little... familiar... with Banana Joe's swimsuit area???!!!

fondue with cheddar

@iceberg I'd hate to go on a date with Ernesto and have him judge me, that'd be no fun.

mcleodglen

@iceberg
i guess you're not alone on that one.

@iceberg Yeah, that really caught my eye, and I thought he was getting a little personal ... but I also thought it was cute. The familiarity to me was akin to a parent with their child. He's just trying to coax the dog's hinder into a position where it shows a little better--even though the showing part is over. Which to me says that he's constantly thinking of the dog even though he's in an interview with humans at the moment.

RubeksCube

@iceberg As a former dog show-er, it's truly amazing how little you notice where you put your hands when you're trying to move them. And Lu2 is right, you don't switch off once the showing part is over...there's a camera there!

It is fine we all do it@a

Banana Joe sounds more like a racehorse name than a dog name, doesn't it?

And I'm not even a dog person (in fact, I'm allergic), yet I have personally met each of the top ten breeds on that list, excepting the beagle. Also, is that a standard poodle? I'm surprised they didn't specify, being the AKC and all, but I don't think they give those haircuts to the toy poodles.

Also, this all reminds me of Best in Show, which is one of the best movies ever.

iceberg

@fondue with cheddar Best In Show!!! Whenever Mr Iceberg and I see a bloodhound we always say "I'm the best dawg in the world!" in that jowly voice. So perfect.

fondue with cheddar

@iceberg Those two are probably my favorite owner/dog combo in the whole movie. And that's saying a lot.

whateverlolawants

@iceberg My boyfriend and I went to a dog show last week and said that when we saw the bloodhounds too. We had a lot to say about weimaraners and Norwich terriers too.

@whateverlolawants NO, THAT'S A BEAR IN A BEE COSTUME

That dog might be cute in the face but he has definite Tiny Dog syndrome (barky, not respectful of handler, thinks he is big because he's used to being picked up around bigger dogs) ... Did I just officially out myself as un-fun?

parallel-lines

@fruiting body (also not a fan of tiny dogs, so no--you're cool)

Heat Signature

@fruiting body Um, no, you outed yourself a very sane and rational person because tiny dogs are the worst and why do people continue to own them?

Megasus

@Heat Signature I like to call them "rodents" because they are not big enough to be a proper dog.

Faintly Macabre

@Heat Signature Sometimes they're nice! Our friends used to have a hilarious chihuahua who could wrap himself in a tiny blanket and never bit or yapped, but then someone stole him out of their yard. (They live in Costa Rica, where chihuahuas are a fancier thing than in the U.S.) But yeah, generally I find that tiny dogs lack the wonderful doggy qualities of bigger dogs (<3 u, shepherd mixes!)

hallelujah

@Heat Signature That's what I always thought, until my roommate got a fatty fat fat chihuahua. Seriously, chub makes all the difference because he was great.

Lu2
Lu2

@Heat Signature I like small dogs. I think it depends on what you like about dogs. Otherwise we're doing the "no true Scotsman" fallacy with the doggies. :)

Heat Signature

@Lu2 Had to google "no true Scotsman", not even gonna lie.

I actually do like small dogs (sometimes)! I should have said that. I think they can be really sweet. And I moved across an ocean with my 60lb dog and it would have been WAY easier if he were 10lb instead. But it drives me nuts when they are poorly behaved, especially when the only reason for it is that they've been treated like babies instead of dogs for their entire life... I've seen it happen many a time. (Also, my dog is a "scary" looking pit mix, and I work with him on training every single day and the double standard makes me mad sometimes.)

oh well never mind

@fruiting body
On a walk with my brother and 3-year-old nephew we meet a family walking their (teeny-tiny) dog. My nephew says very loudly "Daddy, is that a cat?"

Lu2
Lu2

@fruiting body Ohh, yeah. Training is so important, and it bugs me when people with dogs barely bother. I was just talking to a friend about this last night. Some people are just like, "my dog would never obey me, ha ha, I can't resist those big eyes," and I'm like, this is why your dog barks all the time and chews things up and you can't trust him. The people who think training is being "too strict" with little Fifi are the people who really need it the most. It's the owners who need the training! :D

barefoot cuntessa

@fruiting body Not all small dogs are jerks. Sure, I've seen my fair share of shitty little dogs but the same goes for big dogs. Big dogs have bitten me, knocked me over, barked incessantly, and gone after my dog unprovoked. The main difference is that with big dogs, these things are big deals and (hopefully) the problems are dealt with. Issues with small dogs are often over looked because they're not threatening. I've owned and been around tons of awesome little dogs. With proper socialization, most small dogs should lose that Napoleon attitude problem.

My lhasa/poodle mix is pretty much the best ever. She actually prefers kids over adults, hates being picked up, and has never seen the inside of a purse. I'm pretty sure we only get invited places so our friends can hang out with our dog.

fruiting body

@barefoot cuntessa I agree with all of your points! I tried to say some of that in my 2nd comment. I do know some super awesome little dogs.

barefoot cuntessa

@fruiting body Yep, I saw that after I wrote my comment. And I feel you on the pit bull issue. I'm constantly coming to their defense, even to my dog crazy friends! In fact, my brother-in-law owes his life to his pit. I'm glad you invest time and training in your boy. I hope people see you two together and are less afraid of pit mixes.

RubeksCube

@Megano! I had a dog who tended to dislike cats, and was very confused by tiny dogs. Our theory was that she thought they were just cats who had somehow learned her language. I waited (fruitlessly) for the day when she would finally cave and chase one...alas.

MilesofMountains

@RubeksCube My family's Rottweiler was terrified of small dogs. I've seen him running full tilt, pursued by two yapping Westie's. We figure he is confused by something that smells like a dog and looks like a rodent and makes strange, high-pitched noises.

RubeksCube

@MilesofMountains Oh that is the BEST mental image! I love it!

fondue with cheddar

@Heat Signature I don't think terrible small dogs are that way because there's something inherently terrible about them genetically. I think it's because they're small and cute and some owners will let them get away with things that they would not accept from a large dog simply because of their size. For example, if a small dog tries to jump up on you, all it's doing is pawing at your knees so it may not seem like as big a deal (to some), but if a large does does the same thing they're all up in your face and may knock you over.

Faintly Macabre

@RubeksCube Our old dog hated most other dogs because of bad socialization before we got her. She'd never have attacked another dog, but she would jump and bark and raise her hackles when she saw one on a walk. However, she was respectful to old dogs and puppies, and she thought little dogs were puppies, so she tolerated them, too.

Current dog (a sweet pitbull) seems to believe that all dogs are equal, which caused trouble when he tried to run around with a little dog--he kept knocking it over and almost trampling it!

hallelujah

Welp, Petfinder just ruined my life. SO MANY PUPPIES GIVE ME ALL OF THEM.

anachronistique

@hallelujah Me toooooo. But now I'm just sending links to my dad. "Bongo needs a friend!" (Bongo is my parents' extremely sweet and extremely dim black Lab.)

If I type the letter p into my browser it automatically fills in "etfinder.com/pet-search?animal_type=Dog&pet_breed=Dachshund&location=10002&startsearch=Go" and my fiancé has to holler at me to stop torturing myself — and him — by bleating the name of every adorable dachshund available for adoption.

The most recent one was Waylon. But seriously you guys ... LOOK AT WAYLON!!!!!!!

hallelujah

@Jolie Kerr SO CUTE. And made all the more desirable by his name sounding like a lesser-known Wayans brother.

@Jolie Kerr I do like a long-haired dachshund!

@Lu2 The greatest thing I ever did for my mental health was to unfollow everyone on tumblr and start fresh by only following blogs about dachshunds, Hallowe'en, swordcraft, history and nail art.

Lu2
Lu2

@Jolie Kerr HA! I've noticed that in some cases, the social-justice and nail-art tumblrs have intersected. So you can't avoid the tumblr wars totally.

ahahaha you guys did you see its face?!?! ahhhhhhh

km1312

the amount of time i spend on petfinder is my secret shame.

Bacers

I appreciate that the AKC rankings list specifies that German Shepherd Dogs are the second most popular breed, not German Shepherd People. That would just be weird.

Lu2
Lu2

@Bacers And so confusing! I don't think those sheep would be too happy at a dog show, especially not during the Herding Dog rounds.

gluecake

Ughhhhh... I found a pigeon available for adoption. I love pigeons so hard - I used to have a baby that a coworker found on the streets, kicked out of its nest. My apartment is too small for a proper cage though and I live with a jerk cat that would try to hurt it. But also, I can't imagine people in NYC wanting to do adopt a pigeon because a lot of people think they're gross.

I wanna save you and give you a hoooooome, pigeon!
