POP ETC's Lovely "How Will I Know" Whitney Houston Cover

The indie-rock band POP ETC were known as The Morning Benders until March of 2012, and they released this Whitney Houston tribute/cover video on the day before Christmas. It starts off almost blindingly/deafeningly sweetly, but then the background music kicks in, other people appear, lead singer Chris Chu smiles, and you're on your third (fourth, fifth?) listen. More about POP ETC can be found here, and their first album with the new name (released last June) is available on iTunes. [via]

And if you're doing Drynuary, Serious Eats has a pretty gallery of nonalcoholic drinks (lot of ginger).

Oh I'd like to give that boy a hug!

VerityStandingStill

@catalina My first thought was, "THAT is my kind of rock star."

FromTheFuture

@VerityStandingStill le sigh....

Looks like the shots with other people were filmed in Japan; he may very well be at least a head taller than most there, lol. [Although it probably does have to do with the camera angle to some extent, too. :) ]@m

Oh man those non-alcoholic cocktails. The Hawksworth Blue Lavender? Blueberry and lemon juices with a lavender syrup? Sometimes it makes me feel fancier to drink non-alcoholic fancy drinks than real cocktails.

This is pretty much as if Solsbury Hill-era Peter Gabriel had covered Whitney, and I APPROVE.

@wee_ramekin (Also, I kind of want his coat. A lot.)

I had no idea they'd changed their name and now I'm having weird feelings that barely matter but still exist.

@itiresias ME TOO! I like them inasmuch as I listen to their albums sometimes but, I realize now, know almost nothing about them, including apparently that their lead singer is a tiny adorable baby!

But whyyyyy "Pop Etc."??? Does anybody know? This seems like a *horrible* band name, correct?

Toffamu

@dee They explain why they changed their name on old Morning Benders site. http://www.themorningbenders.com/
I used to be like "OMG name change nooo" but I really like their new name and new direction now. As for why they picked POP ETC, I read an interview somewhere where Chris addressed it and it was basically because they really felt connected to pop music growing up; it influenced their lives so much so they wanted to create really good pop music now.
Or something like that.

@dee Found the interview! http://pitchfork.com/news/46067-pop-etc-talk-name-change-new-album/

7th. 7th listen.

Haha, I love the major side-eye the guy gives him at 1:23.

I do not like it when singers make faces that suggest that they are nonchalantly giving birth.

It helps if they are pretty singers. But still. It shouldn't hurt, and if it does, don't pretend otherwise between contractions.

They always do the best covers! My favorite is their version of "Lovefool" by The Cardigans.

GooooGrapefruit!

I hate to be that Azn to say that he's got a very Asian-Joseph-Gordon-Levitt countenance about him and I dig it.

I've had this tab open on my iPad for 3 days in a row and have lost track of the number of times I have enjoyed this!
