"Goodbye," Patty Griffin

Patty Griffin is the best songwriter most people will never hear of, and is "not married" to Robert Plant.

OK, Nicole, this settles it, you are my twin.

She is the best. I'm especially partial to "Mary," "Mad Mission," and "Tony." Her live album is everything.

I'm not even ashamed to say that I found her through the Elizabethtown soundtrack, which is a marker of how great she is.

Lyssachelle

Me too! I listened to her live album so much during my pregnancy, I'm surprised the kid didn't come out singing "Fly"...

"Moses" is my absolute favorite.
Except on those days when "Rain" is my favorite.
And those other days when "Nobody's Crying" is my favorite.
Okay, fine, PATTY is my favorite.

@Lyssachelle Don't get me started on "Poor Man's House."

Nicole Cliffe

That one is actually my favourite, I think.

Hilary Lehman@twitter

@Lyssachelle Right? I don't think she has a single bad song.

katiemcgillicuddy

@Hilary Lehman@twitter "Tony" is just an incredible track. Completely heartbreaking.

Faintly Macabre

@Hilary Lehman@twitter I listened to a LOT of Dixie Chicks in high school and "Top of the World" was always one of my favorites. I only found out that Patty Griffin wrote it when Fuel/Friends posted her recording a few weeks ago, at which point I realized that even though I'd had "Mary" in my iTunes for two years, I had only listened to it once. I've been remedying that!

Patty is one of the talented musicians that exist in this country. The works that he produces is acceptable in society because of the lyrics and the tone in the election of the songs Patty is quite unique. Skyvue Las Vegas

beloved sister, I know your pain was too great, and that you saw no other way to stop it. I still don't know how to say goodbye. Praying that we both have peace.@k

I KNEW I had lots in common with Patty Griffin. Case in point - I am ALSO not married to Robert Plant.

C_Webb

I'd listen to this, but Patty always makes me cry, and I already cried once today. My second cry is penciled in for 3:30, so I'll listen then.

Nicole Cliffe

@C_Webb I know! I was going to post "Long Ride Home," but that's even worse. Or "On Top of the World." Jeez.

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

@Nicole Cliffe Oh, never "Long Ride Home." Never. "Forty years go by with someone layin' in your bed/ Forty years of things you say you wish you'd never said/ How hard would it have been to say some kinder words instead/ I wonder as I stare up at the sky turnin' red."

Scandyhoovian

@C_Webb I feel like there aren't any new "tearjerker artists" these days. I mean, we have Patty and Joni, but they're classics. No one these days can really hold a candle to them.

C_Webb

@Scandyhoovian Yeah, I sometimes cry to Gaga's "Edge of Glory," but it's not really the same thing.

(That said, there could be some awesome new woman and I'm not cool enough anymore to know about her.)

Lyssachelle

@Scandyhoovian I once read that someone dared Patty to write a happy song and she wrote Heavenly Day about her dog.
A happy song about your dog? THAT IS MY KIND OF PEOPLE.

Also, it's an excellent non-traditional song for the wedding father/daughter dance as it is loving without inviting in squicky implications. Also, because eff off, "Butterfly Kisses."

That being said, Rosie Thomas is pretty good at tear-jerker. Her songs "Farewell" and "Death Came and Got Me" are sob-inducing...

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

@Scandyhoovian I sometimes cry when I listen to "Go Home" by Lucius. It's delightful.

par_parenthese

@Nicole Cliffe AUGH, "Long Ride Home." My throat just got all weepy-tight.

Dulcie

@C_Webb I'd like to submit Rose Cousins, specifically "The Send Off". *sniffle*

Shit, I did not know that was the name of one of her songs, so I was afraid this was one of those "in memoriam" type posts!

Nicole Cliffe

@fondue with cheddar Oh, my God, I am so sorry you thought that for even one minute.

fondue with cheddar

@Nicole Cliffe It's okay, because now I'm happy because Patty Griffin is alive!!!

Scandyhoovian

@fondue with cheddar Oh my god I was just going to say, I first read that title without really absorbing the punctuation somehow and PANICKED.

I am glad I was just being a tired sickface and reading wrong. Phew!

fondue with cheddar

@Scandyhoovian I am not a sickface and therefore have no excuse.

Statham

@fondue with cheddar I thought so too! And I am not a sickface either!

(1) My friend and I absolutely drove from Washington, DC to Pittsburgh to see her play in 2004. After we'd finished our last finals.

(2) SWEET LORRAINE.

katiemcgillicuddy

Wait, wait, WAIT, Robert Plant and Patty Griffin?! That's a thing?!? Oh my god, I have to go lie down, this is too much.

itiresias

@katiemcgillicuddy

I have no context other than the obvious, but it's still wonderful.

Nancy Sin

I think I would like her, except my mother listens to her very loudly and gets mega-sentimental. She's an amazing talent, but if I have to experience my mom listening to "Tony" with googoo eyes one more time...

Lyssachelle

@Nancy Sin I would like to hang out with your mom. We could listen to Patty, lie on the bed, stare at the ceiling fan and wonder what the hell we've been doing with our lives.

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

OK, also, the new Tegan and Sara single "Now I'm All Messed Up" has me crying. http://stereogum.com/1237151/tegan-sara-now-im-all-messed-up-stereogum-premiere/mp3s/

WONDERFUL Post.thanks for share..more wait .. …There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives. madeira palsticaf4
