Overflow Skull Storage, and More

Emily Graslie is rad. She works at The University of Montana's Philip L. Wright Zoological Museum and just launched a web series about life around the office. "I'd like to share some of the amazing things we have in the collection with the Internet. Let's talk about your favorite animal," says she. Let's! [via]

How is nobody talking about this, this is the best video I have ever seen

pandajerk

I'll admit that I jumped in my seat when they showed the leopard head.

renegadeoboe

@pandajerk so did I!

This video is the raddest.

plonk

this is GREAT. it is my DREAM to work in a natural history museum.

at the last university lab where i worked, we one day got a department-wide email that said "we found some moose heads in one of the freezers, does anyone know whose they are?"

blueberry

That lab is awesome - the coolest stuff in there! Emily is a full-time VOLUNTEER employee!!!

I feel so lame right now. Sitting here in my cube, taking a break from writing software enhancement guides, watching a video with a peek of how awesome people work.

I love the industrious beetles!

My heart legitimately jumped when that leopard head popped up.

Also, what is going on with the river otter? Are those ropes through the eyes, or am I missing something?

This looks AMAZING but I'm already getting NOTHING done at work today because I'm too busy commenting on other Hairpin posts!

1)Why have I done nothing with my life? I could have a Sheep Room. I could work at that very Zoological Museum, if I had only been more of an endeavoring youth.

2)I get the feeling she watches a lot of VlogBrothers on YouTube/knows the one that lives in Missoula.

3)MONTANA

EDIT: Yes, Hank Green, one of the VlogBrothers, helped produce this video. I could have just watched the whole thing before commenting but there you go. There it is.

laurel

Emily is charm herself.

fondue with cheddar

@laurel Right? I'm in love. Or maybe I just want to be her best friend. Actually, I think I just want to be her.

Apocalypstick

This is amazing. Life aspiration inspiration :)

Overheard in a prep room about 5 years ago:
"You can totally eat and skeletonize at the same time. Sometimes I'll hold a bag of Doritos in one hand and work with the other..."

Maladydee

This was the most fun 5 minutes I've spent all day. Not that today's been sucky or anything, I mean it could have been better but was not especially bad. But this was so SO fun to watch that it significantly increased the Average Amount of Fun for the day. ..... Granted, I might need to start having more fun. But this video was still awesome.

Dances With Nerds

So great to see folks talking about this! The whole story behind how it got funded is an interesting one.

On an unrelated note, I have a professor who likes to talk about his undergraduate job, where he had to deflesh a leopard pelvis. Every time I see natural history things, I think of him.

baked bean

Yeah! I took an anthropology course at my small college, and we got to go back there to pick out artifacts to do a report on... and I was AMAZED at the amount of stuff our little University has in it's Anthro collection... can't even imagine everything else. The professor said there were warehouses full of stuff. Like apparently the largest collection of Middle Eastern artifacts outside of the Middle East? WTF?
